If you weren't around when the first mortal kombat movie came out you won't understand how massive it was, mortal kombat was peak at the time, everyone was obsessed with it, when the movie came out they had a live tour where they had some kind of live action stuff and a bunch of cosplayers. They would give out stuff like secret codes and figures and stuff, it doesn't sound like a big thing but at the time it was the coolest thing ever. Nowadays everybody is divided, everyone has their favorite fighting game, but everyone played killer instinct, umk3, or street fighter. Imagine a live tour and movie when pokemon was peaking in popularity. They used to play the mk song on radio stations for months. People used to spread rumors of secret codes for characters that didn't exist and whoever had umk3 was automatically the coolest kid in the group. The movie itself was w/e, but it all the culture surrounding it that made it so memorable.

I still remember Mortal Monday when the game was released on home consoles! then one of my friends had a birthday party at the movie theater and we saw the MK movie 🥳

I actually attended a MK Live Tour show in Louisiana! I got some mini ~1.5 inch figures from the merch table (Subzero, Scorpion, Kano, and I forget if there was a fourth), but also the oval shaped MK backlit logo thing that was used near the end of the show for all the crowd to hold up like lighter's during Freebird to help send enough power to defeat Shao Khan. The fight choreography was great, very acrobatic. They even had a plant near the front that I think was supposed to be Johnny Cage that got dragged out of his seat to join the fight against the bad guys. Scorpion had a green fluorescent chain thing that he would swing around rather than throw as a projectile that still looked pretty entertaining under the blacklighting of the stage. The MK hype simply permeated into just about everyone at the time!

I just can't go with the newest MK movie being good. Totally my opinion, but I thought the story was garbage, some of the costumes were embarrassing sub-cosplay, and they didn't let any of the actual MK characters be the hero they had to invent this boring, BORING new protagonist who I couldn't have cared less about. At least MK Annihilation was hilarious.

No way you put DOA over everything else. Is this a joke? It is the worst fighting game movie I have ever seen. Meanwhile, MK Annihilation is the best. It has the characters, it has an epic cast, cool fights. MK was my childhood, so yes, I am bias. But nevertheless I think it is worlds above the Tekken and SF movies.
