Friends with Benefits movie commentary reaction
Friends with Benefits is a much better movie than we initially anticipated and we loved making a commentary video for it. There's a decent amount of nuance and solid character reasoning, whilst being fairly self aware.

It's hilarious that this movie has almost exactly the same plot as "No Strings Attached", which also came out in 2011, and Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, main stars and former "That 70's Show" costars, would eventually end up together in real life.

Justin Timberlake has pretty good comedic timing so I think he did well in this movie. There is an interview floating around KZbin from when Mila and Justin were doing international press and a Russian interviewer basically asked Justin why he was doing movies instead of music. Mila, who speaks fluent Russian, apparently didn't like her tone and chewed her out in Russian to defend Justin. All the while poor Justin is sitting there desperately trying to catch up with the translator in his ear because he has no idea what is going on just that Mila went into protector mode.

The funny part is is that Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher's relationship actually started from a FWB scenario after they had done these types of movies. Mila had mentioned it in interviews and that maybe they should have paid more attention to the end of their movies lol.

Also in the airport, Justin Timberlake had a sign that said ‘O. Penderghast’ at first before he wrote milas characters name. Olive penderghast was Emma stones characters name in Easy A. And milas mom in this was Emma’s mom in that lol

so interesting thought: they keep repeating the "if we were dating i wouldn't be able to tell you ____" line for things they can talk to a partner about, and they were both described as essentially emotionally unavailable in relationships. conclusion: they literally didn't know how to actually date before this lol

Def not a comment against as I love their reactions but I chuckle every time they correct the mom too. Some of what they call out is the time for sure, but some is Def meant to be the character obvi being very mistaken. I'm a lot more forgiving of movies bc of this XD and they are better than most others about enjoying the movie for what it is!! But it def tickles me at times when they correct a character and I have a moment of "oh, right... Some people did take that literally prob, didn't they"

I mean I could be wrong but I thought friends with benefits is kind of like being in a couple anyway, because your friends with someone so you learn all this vulnerable stuff about each other but you’re also having sex, it’s not a casual relationship because it would be called hooking up or something, but it’s called friends with benefits which means that it’s about friends who have sex, so it’s very normal for them to act like friends, which yes makes it seem like they’re in a relationship, but friends know things about each other and go out to lunch and hang etc, all of its pretty normal. Yes they definitely like each other and the fact that they’re hooking up changes things a little, but when I watched this movie, I never saw it as just hooking up because it was called friends with benefits, so I assumed it would be like two people who became friends who were hooking up, I don’t know if that makes sense at all, but I just think it’s different from something casual,
@ajmalaika1287
@ajmalaika1287 Жыл бұрын
Total sense, it’s all about communication and being on the same page. Those sort of stories definitely weren’t told in the early 2000s. They “definitely dating” agenda must be upheld
@AshleysAdvice
@AshleysAdvice Жыл бұрын
@@ajmalaika1287 yeah, don’t get me wrong I think it’s really important to be friends with your partner above everything else, but having sex with your best friend might also be good because if you’re not looking for a relationship and you want something semicasual but you still want all that intimacy of hanging out with someone, then why not go for it and your friends so you take the time to get to know each other and primarily would’ve known each other for awhile before deciding to sleep together, that’s why people always say you should marry your best friend or your partner should be your best friend, because those relationships are more likely to work out and even if you end up breaking up you still have a friend. So the movie isn’t wrong and that friendships can become more than that, especially if you’re sleeping together, it’s a very intimate thing and you are more likely to develop feelings over time, but at the same time just being friends with someone means that you still have that intimacy and strong connection regardless of whether or not you are sleeping with the person. Being friends with someone, means hanging out, getting to know them, sharing a common interest etc, so it all makes perfect sense to me, why someone would want to sleep with their best friend if they like them or if they just want the sex but want to do it with someone they know really well. It is a little weird and I do think you need to be careful, but I definitely get it and I think movies often don’t betray that kind of stuff in the best way, Because it’s more about the drummer and the ultimate goal of ending up together.
@BambiLena666
@BambiLena666 Жыл бұрын
@@AshleysAdvice Idk about doing it with your "best friend", it would be something pretty weird for me at least if I already developed such a close friendship with someone. Also people tend to forget it can be a lot easier to be friends with someone than be in a relationship with someone. I had a friends with benefits thing with a friend that I knew I would never be compatible with in a relationship. Great friends, great sex, would absolutely never work as a couple because we had very different expectations and desires from relationships.
@AshleysAdvice
@AshleysAdvice Жыл бұрын
@@BambiLena666 yeah I think it depends on the people, I was just talking about both sides of the argument, we are for some people choosing their best friend as their partner makes sense because that’s the person that knows you’re the best, but on the other hand sometimes yeah. The saying is just that you should find someone who is like your best friend not necessarily date your best friend but your partner should be your best friend and you guys should be friends before

hey, fun (or not so fun fun) american history fact! most people really dont realize (or dont talk about if they were alive for it) but the church-and-state-being-intertwined thing only happened during the cold war, same with starting every school day with the pledge of allegiance. "in god we trust" was added to our money in '57, "under god" was added to the pledge in '54, and the constitution (which is our actual founding document, not the declaration) does not mention god at all. while the whole "what would the dead white guys who founded the US think of x" thing is dumb, they would legitimately be disgusted by the level of religious fervor in government these days

To comment on the jaywalking thing, I have to be calculated with it in my city. The layout is super chaotic and some of intersections have multiple angles. It’s actually not super uncommon for pedestrians to get hit and killed here. Doesn’t stop the ballsy ones, but I make sure to only jaywalk when I just have two directions to be mindful of.

I relate to Mila Kunis withdrawing and kinda ghosting Timberlake. I've done that before, and oftentimes it has something to do with me being impulsive and knowing that I should really digest the situation rather than just throwing my feelings at them from where I was in that moment. I don't usually say "no it's fine" and want the guy to keep digging to figure out why I'm pissed, I want the guy to give me the space to let me approach them in a better environment where I can also voice criticism that doesn't feel like a personal attack. Like, I can see myself feeling all sorts of upset when being in the shoes of Mila in that moment and if I were to voice my feelings right then and there, it would probably turn into something where I try to piece together all the clues where the guy is a bad person and then argue that they are an asshole. But with time, Mila voiced exactly the thing she was supposed to state, to me the problem would have seemed like she might have read too much into this relationship after all, that she had the wrong expectations and the trip to his parents gave her the wrong impression, but the thing that truly sucked was hearing someone who was supposed to be a friend call her an insane person that they would never date...

When I bought it I definitely enjoyed the movie commentary, which this director also did Fired Up (which is such a ridiculous movie but I still love how stupid it is but again the DVD commentary gets me). 1:23- Never seen this film in full, just a small clip of a scene on KZbin when I was 16 years old. It was the first time I actually heard the term "friends with benefits". Such a dumbass concept to think sex can done without catching feelings(It's bad enough that it's premarital). 3:39- No human can shut down their emotions(Unless it's depression), God did not design us that way. Emotions are ALWAYS there no matter what. 9:11- Never been to New York, but I have heard that street performers are a thing. I suppose you have to be brave and bold to pull something eye-catching to get people's attention. 14:09- Because that's how God made sex. It's an emotional experience(I'm a virgin, however I do know that sex is soul bonding thing). That's why God specifically designed sex for married people, but humans are hard-headed unfortunately. 15:03- I mean he looked at your ass, so yes he definitely has a lust on you. 16:00- They're swearing on a Bible app to have a sex only no emotions relationship. That's blasphemy. 16:20- "Fuck being friends (say it again, girl) Fuck being friends (we don't pretend) I got your heart in my hand and your dick in the other You ain't scared to fuck, but you scared of being lovers Why is that, huh? My pussy beat better then my heart do? Boy, please, you ain't blind, you a smart dude So why you pussy-footin' on this part two? Know, you didn't come here just to argue You still love me, oh, oh, oh Yeah, you stuck, why play dumb? You still love me, oh, oh, oh, yeah Why you worried if your friends blowing me up tryna fuck me? All up in my phone, all, all up in my head You stuck, why play dumb? You still love me, oh, oh, oh Fuck being friends (being friends) Fuck being friends (fuck being friends) Fuck being friends (being friends) Fuck being friends (fuck being friends) Why you in my bed? Prolly 'cause I'm still up in your head, oh I was doing better and you knew it so you called me Then you start to feel again, but you're scared to fall Why is that? Huh? My pussy beat better then my heart do? Boy, please, you ain't blind, you a smart dude So why you pussy-footin' on this part two? 'Cause I know, you didn't come here just to argue You still love me, oh, oh, oh Yeah, you stuck, why play dumb? You still love me, oh, oh, oh, yeah Why you worried if your friends blowing me up tryna fuck me? All up in my phone, all, all up in my head You stuck, why play dumb? You still love me, oh, oh, oh Fuck being friends (being friends) Fuck being friends (fuck being friends) Fuck being friends (being friends) Fuck being friends (fuck being friends) Fuck being friends (say it again, girl)"- F*** Being Friends by Jessie Reyez.

While I prefer this movie over No Strings Attached ANY DAY, I will say that I just noticed that one of them has an Asian best friend and one of them has a Black best friend and oh my God.... cringe. *Yikes*
