You’re actually right. It is a parody. Well not exactly a parody but a satire. Scream is meant to intentionally poke fun at the horror genre and it is extremely meta, way before being meta was even a thing. Scream is a very self aware franchise which is made known to the viewer through characters like Randy. Satire aside, it’s not particularly “scary” but it is thrilling and because we don’t know who the killer is it’s got a nice mystery element to it also.

Funny thing is that it's not even Wes Craven's first meta movie. He made "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" a few years prior to Scream. And it's absurdly meta.. Like Craven appears as himself writing the movie that he's appearing in. Very "in your face" meta elements. I'm not really surprised that Scream became the face of "meta horror" even though it wasn't Craven's first stab at something like it. While I like New Nightmare, I feel Scream just works better as a standalone movie.

It's interesting that you said the acting was bad/cheesy and that the characters were corny because part of what set this film apart from slashers that came before was that the characters had more depth and the acting was really well done. I've never heard anyone say the acting was bad before.
@noodle_fc5 ай бұрын
It's because this whole movie was very specifically targeted at '90s audiences with knowledge of '70s-'80s horror. They can clock that the vibe includes elements of satire, but they're not familiar with the movies being satirized. They see non-naturalistic acting choices but they don't understand them in context. It's like when Sydney comments about the bimbo who runs upstairs instead of out the door, then a few minutes later she runs upstairs instead of out the door. Sydney isn't a slasher-film bimbo, but she's still in a slasher film. She's smart enough to be unpredictable to us, but not so smart that she entirely breaks the genre. The dialog and acting is like that, too. It's _mostly_ naturalistic, but there's gap where the fun lives. If you're not into jazz, you'll think the musicians are too sloppy to get all the notes in the right places.

@@srahhh Actually, I think they did pretty well picking up on the vibe considering their background. I like jazz well enough despite being largely unfamiliar with what came before. It is a little painful to hear "cheesy" applied to one's favorite movies. If it makes you feel better, I think that means something different to the youth. "Cheesy," as near as I can figure, is a catch-all designation for whenever the earnest-to-irony ratio feels a little off. Ironic sensibility is one of the most significant differences between generations. When you hear "cheesy," translate "I process the irony or earnestness I'm seeing differently than the film's contemporary audience did."

It's actually satire, not parody. Scary Movie is parody though. Scream comments on the horror trends of the time while being itself a horror movie with some comedic moments. That's why it's very meta. It's a horror movie where the characters know the tropes of horror movies. Scary Movie however is full on comedy and makes fun of various horror movies that came out around that time. That's what Scream is all about. Scream was made more of a satire for horror movies of the past, some people confuses it with a “parody”… a parody is a spoof or making fun of other movies which is more SCARY MOVIES genre. SCREAM did have some comedy..it was still well balanced with the horror/intensity/seriousness too. Also, they were more honoring the horror movie genre than making fun of it. This movie was more self-aware and very META when they made the SCREAM franchise. Also, the acting was not horrendous…it was genius to me and the actors especially Matthew Lillard who played Stu (the other real killer) really sold his character as being psychotic, but he still has this foolish/childish nature where he was easily manipulated by Billy to be his accomplice. SCREAM really did revive the horror genre at that time where you really didn’t know who the real killer/killers was until the end. Usually there is only 1 killer in horror movies…SCREAM broke the mold and kept the audience guessing and had two killers. But again…people have their preference in terms of horror movies and acting styles which is fine too. I just wanted to give me perspective and why SCREAM is such a huge and well loved franchise and how it really changed the horror genre for slasher films.

I love this reaction when Sydney opens the door and it’s Dewey with the mask 😂❤️Can’t wait for you guys to watch the rest of them 🫶🏾

Its only good till pt 2 and thats it. Everything after that is just a copy of the previous movie that sucked starting with pt 3.

@@Pr0x1modifferent strokes for different folks, just because you didn’t like it doesn’t mean it sucked. Personally for me my favorites go 6,1,4,3,5,2. Scream franchise are the only scary movies I can actually watch, so I rewatch them often

@@glodymadiamba6064 No, they genuinely do suck because they're just cookie cutter versions of themselves. If you seen pt 3 then you seen the rest, there is no difference except in change of actors.

The movies main location was filmed in Santa Rosa, California. And a few other neighboring locations. Sydney’s house is 1820 Calistoga Road Santa Rosa. Beautiful views!!

You guys should watch the entire series! The tone of the first movie continues through the other movies but not all of them are quite good as the first one. Yet still a staple franchise in the horror genre and defnetlly worth a watch!

The actors name is skeet Ulrich, who plays Billy Loomis and fun fact he was actually hired on because of the resemblance of Johnny Depp in nightmare on Elm Street, and that was the inspiration which you know is both directed by Wes Craven R.I.P

13 mins into the reaction and every time there's a jump scare, I laugh my ass off because you both react so violently. Just full-body reactions. 😆

Y'all should definitely continue the series. Also, the voice actor for Ghost Face is a different guy and I think he voices all of them.

Scary Movie also has a decent amount of I Know What You Did Last Summer, A little Scream II and a touch of The Blaire Witch Project.

So the people in this movie get called out for bad acting, but Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are thespians at the top of their craft according to you guys. Funny shit.

The great thing about Scream was it was so self aware, in that it even though it is a serious subject it constantly refers to old Horror films and makes reference to the plot of them etc. It also spawned superb sequels, each on of them is great too and well worth a watch. You gotta do the sequels, the writing is just so clever. Wes Craven killing off the most famous person in the film in the first few minutes. An incredible amount of such famous female actors in the Scream films just too many to mention.
