His dad wants him to "be a shark" which is similar to parents of gay boys telling them to "be a man", and also he basically "comes out" to Oscar as vegetarian and talks about how he hasn't told anyone else and all that. Now as an adult it feels pretty obvious what they were going for but I totally didn't notice as a child haha
