It's a very iconic opening, though a reference to Sliders would've fit better given the episode's premise. As for Richard Simmons, he's a famous fitness instructor associated with aerobics. He has a very flamboyant personality, and many made fun of him for it. He was considered non-masculine, a sissy, and it was regarded as an insult to be compared to him. That being said, there's nothing actually wrong with Richard Simmons, and he seems like a nice guy, it's just the perception of him that's used as an insult. Also, I'm assuming that the joke about the dead silent comedian is a reference to Fatty Arbuckle. It makes sense with context, but that context is dwindling. Fewer people know of him, many of his films are lost, an then there was the scandal around him, one of Hollywood's first. Great comedian though, a true pioneer in the field, and I highly recommend his work with Buster Keaton.
