Your shot shell reminds me of a job in Pecan Island. There was a 4’ alligator hit by a car & decomposed on the highway. I ignored it but the little city boy I was with stopped and looked. He yelled that someone had shot it. I scoffed(it had been run over) but he pointed out all of the shot shells associated with the carcass. I told him “no, that’s .410, those are .20ga, plus red and green 12gauge”. Then we picked them up and saw the bite marks. The alligator had eaten twenty, or so, shotshells and they were stuck in its stomach. It was an epiphany moment for me. Be a good steward and police yourself, when possible.

My back yard in Summerville was a treasure trove for teeth and other fossils. Any creek bed around was loaded and you had better keep a keen eye out for snakes first. They were everywhere and the occasional gator was highly respected. We would fill several shoe boxes each summer. Great memories.

10:28 What an amazing find! Do you know if this ear bone belongs to a toothed whale or baleen whale? When you said 40-50 feet long my mind went more towards some massive raptorial sperm whale but even that seems unlikely since that pushes the maximum length of a livyatan (if I'm correct about their max lengths being between 17.5-18m)

Growing up in the 70s we would all ride our bikes eager to find new areas to explore. In the middle of the state ( Gainesville ) imagine our surprise when we happened across a creek absolutely loaded with sharks teeth. From that point forward our favorite thing to do was to go "sharks teeth hunting". In constant competition to find the largest and best preserved tooth the My father set the bench when he came across a whole Megalodon tooth that was as big as his hand! Good times.. Miss ya pop.

I live in the Netherlands and on our southern coast you can find shark teeth and older material like pyritized ammonites and when I used to go there going was good but I found it slow so I bought a gold-digging set siffs and pans and that really sped up the procedings since the fossil materials are much heavier than sand a bonus was microfossils! that you normally wouldn't find like pinhead ammonites and really tiny shark teeth and other remains baby sharks used to lose their teeth too in those days but you can't see them among all that sand and mud normally.

Puerto Rico was born in the Mesozoic era at the end of the Jurassic period, just when the extinction of species such as the dinosaurs began more than 66 million years ago. However, the Megalodon evolved right at the beginning of the Miocene about 20 million years ago. At that time, some regions of Puerto Rico were submerged under the sea. Their appreciation for warm tropical waters made Puerto Rico one of their habitats. Many Megalodon teeth have been found in different parts of Puerto Rico. Both on the coasts and in towns far from the beaches and the sea.

Do those Meglalodon teeth still have some original tooth material or are they completely mineralized?
@DiggingScience
@DiggingScience 4 жыл бұрын
This is a great question. Yes, they do have some original material. The enamel of these large teeth is comprised of apatite which is stable at the Earth's surface condition. So the apatite has not chemically changed inside the crystal lattice since the animal died. There has been permineralization in the pore space of the enamel and on top of it however. Let us know if you have any more questions and we hope to see you in the comments again on future videos!
