Not an uncommon reaction seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time. The first time I was there, a lady looked over the wall, walked away, then her mouth opened in awe as she turned back around to the canyon and yelled out "God Bless America!"

Doug and I took the Grand Canyon Railway with friends about 14 years ago. We had a great time. And once we got there, looking at the canyon was surreal. It really did look like a postcard picture.

The area you walked around on the video - is that an easy walk from the train or did you do the shuttle/bus tours or anything?

Thank you so much for watching the video! When we went the buses were not even running due to restrictions. However the train will drop you off at bottom of a hill just below the El Tovar hotel. Did you guys have to book for a bus tour to get to Grand Canyon? or is it near where the hotel is? Planning for next year and never been to Grand Canyon or the Railway. Thanks for taking us to your adventures!

So in this video we took the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams. The train station is located right next to the hotel. It’s very easy to get up to the Grand Canyon from Williams. We then drove our car up to the Grand Canyon the next day to experience a few nights in the canyon. If you drive from Williams it’s about 60 minutes away. If you take the train it’s about 2-2.5 hours to get there. We recommend to do the train for the experience and then spend a few nights at one of the hotels inside Grand Canyon National Park. Once you are in GCNP check to see if the bus system is working or not. When we went it was not! However the bus system allows you to travel for free to almost all of GCNP and the village. There is a lot to do without booking a bus tour(those were also not running when we went). Great video. We are visiting the Grand Canyon, Jerome, and Sedona in about 2 weeks. We plan to only visit the GC for the day. Should we do the train and have limited sites we can see because as of today (8/24) the shuttles and busses are not running, or drive in our own car and get to explore more, but miss the train experience? We are a couple with a 6 year old.

Hello! First thank you for your support in watching this video. We do have a few other videos from our recent time in the Grand Canyon. Now to answer your question, it depends on what kind of experience you would prefer to have. We did the train one day and then drove our car and stayed inside the canyon for two nights. Yes you are correct the busses are not running. However if you have your own car you can easily drive to almost every lookout point in the Grand Canyon. Honestly the farther away points are incredible because they offer amazing views and a lot less people (since the buses are not running). There are a lot of hotels in the Grand Canyon National Park that are amazing and sit right on the rim. We enjoyed the peacefulness at night and being able to walk a very easy pathway on the rim everyday. If you do want to venture into the canyon, the Bright Angel Trail is a great trail but do NOT go to deep into the canyon. It’s easy to go in but hard to get out. Now the train is a wonderful experience. Mathew loves trains and it’s honestly a relaxing time. You can pick whichever class you would prefer to ride in. Our only advice is try to check the weather before choosing the Pullman car. Yes it’s a fun car. However that is the only car that has zero air conditioning. With the train you will have about 3 hours at the Grand Canyon. It is still enough time to see it’s beautifulness. Yes you won’t have time to go into the canyon with those three hours, but if you follow the rim trail in either direction from the El Tovar Hotel you can get an incredible view in a peaceful way. Both experiences are incredible for different reasons. However it’s magical to stay in the Grand Canyon National Park and to see how calm it gets at night.
