I'm a Canadian. Back in 1981 I took the train from Toronto to Vancouver. I had a roomette. It was the best experience ever! The food was divine, the staff were amazing. The bar car was a non-stop party with a load of people who had travelled from Atlantic Canada. At that time, the train went through the Rockies via Banff and Revelstoke. This is the absolutely most awesome scenery. The Spiral Tunnel was amazing. You could see the front of the train going in one direction while the back of the train was going 90 degrees in the other direction. Unfortunately, that route is now used by the Rocky Mountaineer which most Canadians can't afford to take. The trip took 2.5 days. This Jasper route is much longer and different scenery. Definitely, take the train across Canada!

So, I just did this trip myself at the end of May! I travelled Sleeper Plus Class, which includes a comfortable bed every night to sleep in and all of your meals, exactly the same as the meals in Prestige Plus Class. I am a Senior, so I got a bit of a discount, but I am extremely thrilled to say that I only paid $1,307. for MY 4-day and 4-night experience on this same train. (Prices went up by $150. across the board just a few days later for the 'high' season.) I wouldn't recommend staying in your own private cabin, for the very reason that it causes you to be a lot less social with your fellow travellers. I met people from all over the world and thoroughly enjoyed the interactions. Every day I ate meals with different people. I came home with new friends from Ireland, England, Australia, Germany, India, the Netherlands, etc., etc. My sleeping berth was private and very comfortable. Taking showers was pleasant and easy and you are provided with large towels, soap and shampoo. Booze is not included in the pricing for Sleeper Plus Class, so you pay as you go for wine with dinner ($10./glass) or any other drinks you may wish to have. All non-alcoholic drinks are included, though. I did this trip alone because I don't have a travel companion. I felt safe and secure the whole time and was treated very, very well by all of the VIA Rail Staff. I would do it again in a heartbeat! (Next time, I think I'll do it from Vancouver to Toronto!) This is the train journey of a lifetime and I highly recommend it. 😎

Found your story! Wonderful! Where did you book? What’s the name of your route, please? I’m a senior also, as are my regular traveling companions. We love meeting strangers who soon become friends 🩷
@JanKishkon Жыл бұрын
@@carolewhelan2492 Hi Carole. I used CAA (Canadian Auto Association) to book my trip, because I am a member there and I found it easiest. (Not being completely comfortable doing things online, I like to get the assistance of a much younger helper! The AutoClub gives me that for free!). I have a bit of advice. If you get a private cabin, I believe that it makes you a lot less sociable with your fellow travellers. A lot of the 'cabin people' tended to just stay in there except for mealtimes. Also, if you are in a cabin, you can only see out one side of the train when you are in there with the door closed. I personally think that I had a better experience than they did. I got myself a lower Sleeper Berth and it was excellent! The upper one involves a little ladder and I'm not too secure about ladders at night-time (anytime, if I'm honest -- not a spring chicken any more!). The lower berth is astonishingly comfortable, and you have that huge window all to yourself all night long (of course, you can close the blind, but I left it wide open the whole time and slept in the moonlight!). Even if I was awake at night, I could still gaze out the window if I wanted to. These berths are transformed into comfortable loveseat-sized chairs - one for each person. The trains they use for these journeys are historic. They were built in the 1950's and have been fully restored. My train had 22 cars, 2 of which were engines, 4 were dome cars, 2 were dining cars, 2 were Economy Class seating, 2 were Prestige Class cabins and 1 was a luggage car. All the rest were Sleeper Plus category. Sleeper Plus is the mid-range class -- Prestige is the top and Economy the bottom. Sleeper Plus includes all your meals, and the food is identical to that served to the Prestige people. The food was excellent. Great meals, with lots of choice and done very elegantly and beautifully. It's fine dining, to be sure! Depending on the number of passengers, there is more than one seating for lunch and dinner. When you sign in at Union Station at the beginning, they have you choose you dining preferences for the day right then and there, and then you are given the chance to choose every day and you can change it if you want to. You will be expected to share a table for 4 when you go for your meals. I talked to and met people from all over the world. It was fabulous. I read comments from people who said they wouldn't want to have to eat with strangers -- that astonishes me, because I had the most wonderful time doing exactly that. I absolutely loved this journey and I definitely plan to do it again. I want to do it in different seasons. I also want to do it in reverse -- from Vancouver to Toronto as well as Toronto to Vancouver. I flew home at the end of my 3 weeks away (I spent lots of time visiting friends in the Vancouver area once I was out there. It took me 4 days and 4 nights to get out there. And just over 4 hours to fly back (Abbotsford to London). I recommend that every single Canadian does this journey at some point. It will open their eyes! It's the trip of a lifetime and I highly recommend it. I had the time of my life.

I have just seen your comment here, sorry for long delay in responding to you. I booked my trip through CAA, the Canadian Auto Club (I am a member). The route is called VIA Rail The Canadian Train #1. Twice each week it departs from Toronto and four days later arrives in Vancouver at Pacific Central Station. And twice each week that same train leaves Vancouver for Toronto. I recommend this trip wholeheartedly. I want to do it again (but have to wait until my much needed hip replacement is behind me!) If you go, enjoy it! Go in June, before school lets out but the days are nice and long. I actually departed on May 28th when I went last year, which got me a bit of a discount because it wasn't considered high season yet. In fact, the very next departure would have been $150. more for my trip.@@carolewhelan2492

As a 33 year railroader, I've seen some of the most incredible country imaginable that is not accessible to any save the hardiest backpackers. I've been stalked by bobcats, inspected (too closely) by bears, and startled way too often by buzzworms (rattlesnakes.) I once had a coyote chase my motorcar, but he gave it up. This trip, depicted here, has been a joy to watch. I might talk my wife into making the same journey. Multiple thumbs up!!!

My wife and I did this trip from Vancouver to Toronto in September of 2011. Great fall colors. This was back when ViaRail had great weekly specials that came out the same day each week. We were not in prestige class but we had a bedroom at 75% off. We paid $500 each rather than $2000 each. Great dream trip that we had talked about for a few years. I read those weekly emails for a few months before this one showed up and we jumped on it. Keep your eyes open. There are bargains out there!
