I have a race update. This race was 2 laps at 12 miles per lap. So off the start I grabbed the lead and built over a one minute lead by the end of lap 1. I led the second lap and maintained my lead for 8 miles and with 4 miles to go, disaster struck. I had developed a cramp on the inside of my right knee. Every time I would put the power down on a climb, this cramp would snatch me. I finally had to dismount and walk this off while chugging some skratch. I managed to get the cramp to go away but my lead and the leader were long gone. I believe that I didn't drink enough during the race. Like Jimmy Buffett said, "it's my own damn fault". 😂 Lesson learned. I've watched enough Syd and Macky videos to know better. Anyway, it was a fun race and everyone went home in one piece. Thanks for the inspiration and all you do. Now I just gotta remember to be more awesome.........and drink during the race. 👍💪👊. ✌️out.

Macky, love to watch you race as you are always in the front pack going hard but I must admit how much I enjoy watching Syd when she has settled into her race routine and starts passing people, especially the guys who must dread being passed by a girl - apologies Syd and all of those other great lady racers out there, but us blokes are pretty simple human beings.😂 Keep up the great work both of you.

I've been trying the Skratch hydration out here on the longer rides. I do think at some point that extra sugar (aka dextrose) is really key. It's interesting to see how much you go through in a race event.... that's absolutely nuts. PS: My wife hated the minion semi-slicks out here. I think it's because she's timid about side lugs... While I do miss the 'boat anchor' feel of the DHR2 when you slam on the rear brake (a semi slick is a little different riding style!), the DHR2 feels so slow by comparison. I'm probably not part of their target audience for these semi slicks... but it looks like an interesting tire. I'm usually anywhere from an DD assegai to an exo+ or 120tpi minion DHF in the front, and almost anything with big lugs in the back (assegai, DHF, high roller, DHR2, aggressor).

Did 38 miles with 7000 ft of climbing on a full rigid SS in north GA. I was way under prepared. I had only done half the distance and half that amount of climbing before. I didn't really train for it either. Legs were cramping for the last 10 miles. It was brutal. Finished last, of those that did finish, lol.

Macky, when you inflate tires, do you inflate to max psi and check the lines on the sidewalls to ensure the tire is seated, or do you just stop at or just above your preferred psi and just check them then? I'm wondering if it's actually dangerous to pump up to "max" pressure (just to help seat the beads) since I had my 2.2 Maxxis tire blow off of my rim when it was at my tires max psi, which was 60.
@sydandmacky6 ай бұрын
I do check that the bead has seated all the way around on both sides, but that rarely requires going over 25 or 30psi, at least on this tire/rim combo.

Could this be done on a gravel bike?
@sydandmacky6 ай бұрын
We have ridden these trails on a gravel bike and they're fun, but I wouldn't recommend racing this on a gravel bike. Don't think it would be faster and it would be pretty rough on your body.
@Azoth58766 ай бұрын
Feel like i saw someone at the start of the race on a gravel bike? I'd be a bit nervous to do this on drop bars- mostly just because of the loose corners.

@keirfarnum681120 күн бұрын
I can’t really say it makes someone “soft”, but I never could listen to music riding or skiing. It threw off my natural rhythm and I would ride to the music instead of what my body needed to do. Plus I think it’s just good to be aware of what’s going on. 🤷🏻♀️

If you want to really suffer then try NA’s largest 24hr race, 24 hrs of summer solstice, in the solo category. It’s humbling to be on your 3rd lap for your team and be passed by a solo on their 15th+ lap, lol. Some real human machines.
@keirfarnum681120 күн бұрын
I rode an Anchorage to Fairbanks race as part of a team (I was riding with blind folks on a tandem because I had experience riding with a friend who was blind), and I got lent out to a team supporting a solo guy for a little while, and I can remember around mile 200 helping him off the bike to pee and he could barely walk and his pupils were tiny! It was like he was in shock. I still don’t know how he made it all 365 miles to Fairbanks.
