I remember my grandma made our jeans. Nothing says class like homemade jeans. One year for Xmas i got a set of 5 corduroys in different colors the blue wore out quick, the orange lasted until I got to pass them on as hand me downs. Sometimes "white privilege" can be tough.

Okay. The honest truth. When I was a freshman, I wanted an FFA jacket but couldn't afford one. Looking through the catalog, I found a denim LEE RIDERS jacket for$14.00 My Mom made a deal with the owner of the little grocery store and when someone wanted an old hen for stewing,he let Mom know. We would kill and dress an old hen and squirrel the money away until I had enough to order the jacket. I ordered it so big that I had to roll the cuffs up. That way I wouldn't outgrow it too soon. It lasted all the way to my Senior year

My mother grew up so poor (in Hungary) that in winter, the kids would step into fresh cow turds to warm their feet up. One time, she had to go into town to sell her pillow to buy food for her younger siblings so they wouldn't go hungry. After my parents came to Australia, they struggled for a while, and a number of times my mother had to grind up dry crusts of bread and feed my sister and I the crumbs so we wouldn't be hungry.

Growing up in the late 60's and 70's We were really that poor. Dad was a full time college student. Working when he was not in school, mom working at a ball cap factory, them mom, myself, and my brother would mow yards. Had one summer money was so tight. We ate only turnips, onions from the farmers stand (they would buy a bushell basket), and once in a while a rabbit we were able to trap. (Lived in the city at the time near an abandoned lot and railroad tracks). Still will not eat another turnip to this day. Kind of funny they mentioned KFC. That was the once a month treat for the family. Dad graduated and became a doctor.

Sounds like my family ! Welfare saved our lives ,my mom told the welfare Lady when she refused her request for help ! In the morning my kids and I are gonna set on the steps of this office and when you show up for work we’re going to start begging and crying for help ! Now I know some of you people are going to say some mean things about my Mother ,in 1952 a woman didn’t get a job easy woman’s liberation hadn’t kicked in yet ! My mother got out of bed 4 am walked three or four miles to a cotton farm and picked Cotten ,before combing home she walked to a little store bought as much food as her few dollars would buy ! Came home made as good a dinner as possible with meager food she was able to buy ! When there wasn’t anymore Cotten to pick ! She pushed her pride to the side and did the unthinkable asked the state of California for help ! She did get some help and she always told us kids to help people when we could and she always said a prayer for the state of California! Oh and When she got up to go pick cotton at 4 am her breakfast was a drink of water 💧 ! Poor isn’t funny when you are trying to stay alive ! My Dad got hooked on gambling so all the 💰 was thrown away to the Gambling 🎰 house ! She finally said , I am raising these kids on my own and I don’t need you hanging around ! So she again put her pride aside and divorced my dad ! A divorced woman in 1952 wasn’t thought very highly of ! But you know what I don’t give a big rats ass ! She loved us and did her very best to raise us to be self sufficient and kind to others in need ! But I like you boys ,you are funny 😄😃😄😁😆😅😂🤣☺️😊😇. 🌹❤️ R I P 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹Momma we love you ! Thank You !

When I was little, we had an electric stove with four burners. Then one burned out and we had only three. Then another burned out. Then another. Then we just used the stove as a table for an electric skillet.

My dad's family was so poor that (remember he was born in 1931) his family didn't know there was a depression on until Camp 5&7 CCA showed up to plant the trees in the Nicholls Forrest. Grandma did all the cooking for them on an 1870's cook stove. You think we got tough enough today...well grandpa's favorite reply was b______t !

My dad was born in 1924, he is the only one still living by the way, and the youngest of 11 kids.and his mother died in 1930, then Grandad remarried a woman with 2 young boys, then they had 4 kids. Being poor didn't seem to hurt their longevity though, as several of them have lived to be in their mid 90's.

I am glad to hear it. I hope that you and your family is safe and happy. My family is and my dad will be 90 on March 1, 2021, he is still active and wise, he is also my best friend. 2 brothers not related to looked at me like their dad! They were Bob and Mac Eads, both are gone now, Bob lived to 93 and Mac lived to 99, I miss them both. My dad's dad was born March 17, 1880 and passed on March 14, 1981. I hope your dad has a long and happy life. He is part of the greatest generation. God Bless you, my best wishes to you and your family. This is from us in Alaska.

My father was so poor (Italy) he'd get a piece of bread and a tiny cube of cheese... He'd take nibble of cheese and take a bite of bread, then he'd smell the cheese and take the bite of bread. Alternating until all gone, then he'd lick his fingers.

Back in the 1960's when I grew up we had seven kids, and I remember one of most I guess but I had five sisters on our farm. One Christmas our mom used old clothes to make doll clothes for their baby dolls. She bathed them fixed their hair dressed them in the new doll clothes and wrapped them for Christmas.
