I just ran across this channel as I was looking for videos of German Shepherds giving birth, mine is about to do so any day now. This channel is so interesting that I have abandoned my other search for now, what a rewarding job you guys have. Not always easy I’m sure but wow, I’m really impressed at what you guys do.. and appreciative too. What happens if mama doesn’t come back for her babies? I ask this Q about the squirrel in particular bc my brother found a baby in our yard when we were kids and our mom nursed it until she was healthy. We put the baby in a box with shredded pieces of flannel and placed it outside for a couple of days but their was no sign of it’s mom. We named that silly squirrel Lilly who became a family pet for many years. I never thought a squirrel could be such a loving creature but she was. She had little hiding areas within our home such as crocheted socks on shelves.. etc and she loved to snuggle inside our clothing. I don’t know if squirrels are supposed to eat avocados but she loved them! LoL No matter how hard we tried to acclimate her to the outside and meet other squirrels, she simply wasn’t having it. I don’t think she even knew she was a squirrel at that point, she was content being an indoor family member so eventually we just left it be. 🥜🐿 😊

In the very first episode I saw of theirs, a mama raccoon didn't come back for her babies (they guessed she was probably dead). They took the babies to the next site where fortunately there was another mama raccoon with babies the same age, and added the orphaned babies to her litter as they were convincing her to move. They did also mention that if they couldn't find another raccoon mom they'd raise the babies. I assume it'd be similar for squirrels. But this mom is healthy and active and she will return for them if she can.

I love that you were able to set thing up for her to take her babies to a new home. I think one option that as humans we could make nesting boxes and place in trees around the place so that they have somewhere to call home I remember as a child when we lived in the UK boxes were made for the birds that use to make nests under the eaves to limit the damage that these birds made. Here in Australia we have these cute small possums in the roof 😹😹and we have gone over the house looking for how the mother is getting in and there are no holes lose eave boards nothing no holes in the roof at all but we do have possums in the roof we hear them every year when the babies are old enough to start running around playing you can hear them running around playing 😹😹😹😹this has been going on now for the past 5/6 years we have since learned that when the house was built the walls were put up first and then the flooring went down so each wall has the potential to be the entrance to the roof. Today the put the floors down and then build the walls this stops there from having access from the ground up😹😹😹the draw back of living in a house built back in the 50’s 😹😹😹 we could have foam pumped into the walls but that’s just too expensive and it would mean also all the walls would first have to be capped to hold the foam in the cost of doing this would be more that what the house is worth 😹😹😹 so we decided to just live with it 😹😹they are gone by winter until the following year we have had all the old fibreglass batting’s removed and a eco friendly batting’s put in now so that we know at least the environment is safe for them in the roof 😹😹😹old saying “if you can’t beat them, join them”😹😹😹this our way of keeping them safe when playing up there when they are small.😹😹

• Aw, she spent so much time and effort filling it to make a nest. 😕 • I understand putting the jug there since she'd likely try to return to the nest, but that was a very awkward position for her to try to extract the babies; maybe a shelf or branch under the jug would have helped. • What happens if they get too spooked and don't come back, do you take them to a wildlife rehab place or something?

I really dislike when people say that dumb old wives tale, "Don't touch the babies or your smell will be on them and the mother will abandon them!" NO mother abandons her babies. Just recently had a nest of Bewick's Wren momma who laid 4 eggs in it that was made on my Christmas wreath of the front door I forgot to take down from last year XD. Anyhow 3 of the 4 eggs hatched and I handled all 3 chicks for about 3 weeks until they fledged and the mother never once abandoned them. Gonna miss those lil floofs.

Why could these people not just wait a few weeks for the babies to grow a bit. Most squirrels to not just have another safe place to take babies. I know. I spent a day reviving nearly dead hypothermic young squirrel. Even when they start venturing out they are not strong enough to jump far or climb wet fencing. We watched my fav squirrel trying to move her 6 babies into a birdhouse that was too small because she had nowhere else, after a freak late rain ice storm that destroyed her drey. A few hour later we went out to check. and 2 of the babies were on the ground not moving. Mom.boo saw us and ran over to the one and started licking him, Nothing. Then after she moved away my daughter and i noticed just a slightest movement in one tiny finger. My daughter ran back into the house to get towels to wrap the 2 in and bring them in to warm. Sadly it was too late for the little black female, but the gray boy after an hour of rubbing and warming on a wheat bag made the tiniest little peep noise. 6 hours in total and he was screaming down the house. This is also not the first time boo has had a nest destroyed. Once by a mom and baby raccoons clearly looking for a new space, destroyed one of her best built nests. She has to start all over building a new one. So no they do not always have somewhere safe to go. Please think about that before evicting mom with babies not yet able to get around on their own. Have a heart let them grow a bit, let the weather warm, so they have a chance to get out and start making a new drey. It's hard enough on them at this time.
