One of the best things about being miles out on the water at night is the lack of light pollution. This is probably the reason why the light doesn't need to be blinding to be seen from miles away.
@thelighthousecenters5 ай бұрын
Yes! It is beautiful at night. Also (I realized later) that the reason it doesn’t look bright is that it focuses the light on a flat plane and I am taller than the light so when I go up there it is firing at my chest, not my eyes. Every video we make has a few misunderstandings like this. But we are learning together! 😀

Just a couple of tips haviing worked over the water in the Navy. Tie a string to the tools you use over the water and attached the other end to something secure or even a belt loop, just in case your wrench slips out of your hand. Second, the line you put through the pulley tie a simple knot after the area of the longest area of line your using. This way you don't loose your line to the water since the weight will act as an anchor. At night, a match light will travel for miles depending on the altitude over the water, we were taught in the Navy as well.

In Western Australia, there is a lighthouse where the lantern rested on a pool of mercury. There was a rumor that an iron bottle containing 76 lb of mercury was lost over the side but diving attempts haven’t found it.
@fightingblind15 күн бұрын
@darylcheshire1618 yeah that's a tough one. Like after some time it may be more dangerous to attempt to remove it than leave it there due to the iron becoming brittle in the salt water. Like it may be holding together, but one touch could send all the mercury into the water 😮

An old seaplane mechanic told me that he dropped a wrench, in a Pacific lagoon, and he could see it on the bottom. Over 100 feet out of his reach. After that, he learned to use a cord on every one of his tools, because you can't just run and in the middle of the Pacific to get a new tool. Those holes in tool handles are not just for hanging them on pegboard.

I was once part of s film crew working on sea ice extending from the shore of Greenland. Due to tidal movement the ice is not one vast sheet but a number of interlocking sheets with tiny gaps between them. A camera battery was accidentally dropped through one of these gaps and could be seen, once the ice was brushed, on the seabed perhaps a dozen feet below. An Inuit who was with us managed to retrieve it by skilfully manoeuvring a fish hook on a line through a 6mm hole in a lug on the battery case. Sounds next to impossible but I was there and saw it happen. @@thelighthousecenters
@davidwelch67962 ай бұрын
@@thelighthousecenters I don't know how deep the water is around your lighthouse but if you do drop any tools over the side you might be able to retrieve them using a powerful magnet on a line. There is a whole subsection of magnet fishers on KZbin. If you don't catch your own tool you might find other tools and metal objects that have been lost in the past, although I guess that storms and currents may move such items fairly quickly.. You might also consider using a safety line for yourselves when climbing on the railings.

When I was in the Navy and we would have to climb the mast, our tools had to be tied off so we wouldn't drop them on somebody else we'll have them bouncing off into the ocean. That's generally why most tools have a hole in the handle so it can be tied off so you don't lose it. The best way I've found to make a lanyard for your tools, is to buy a bunch of small snap hooks, like you would use for your dog, but not the same size. The cord just needs to be strong enough to catch the tool, and that would include the screw gun. I always used the fisherman's knot and tied an eye at the end of the rope so you could interchange between tools. You should have a stop knot so the rope doesn't fly off through the pulley and into the ocean, 4 or 5 ft from the end of the rope, in a big enough knot so it can't go through the pulley. And if you know how to splice put a rat tail on the end of the rope

The idea of a davit is that it can rotate so you dont have to lean out. It may need greasing, but once the cargo is lifted above the railings you should be able to rotate it over the floor and lower. It helps to bolt or wield a short bar to help turn it. If you have a few things to lift a simple thing like that can really save an aching back.

You were talking about using tools while you're working over the side of the rail and trying not to drop something into the drink. In another lifetime (11 years in the Navy) I spent a lot of time on three different ships. Much of that time was above the 100' level working on equipment. I really didn't look forward to dropping a wrench or something and having to go down after it. I had a small line tied to the tools and to my safety harness. Sometimes the hookup was inconvenient but it served its purpose adequately. It really annoys your shipmates when a metal tool makes that peculiar "clinking" sound when it hits the deck. The bigger the tool is, the more impressive the "clinking" sound!! 😂🤣

Tripping over things reminds of the funny story of the famous warship HMS Victory. HMS Victory was Lord Nelson's flagship in his victory at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805. Nelson served in the Victory for just over two years until his death at the Battle of Trafalgar. HMS Victory is now permanently at anchor in Portsmouth harbour as a tourist attraction, with a plaque to mark the spot on deck where Nelson fell. And the late great British comedian, Spike Milligan observed... "There was a plaque screwed to the quarterdeck that read 'Nelson fell here'. I'm not surprised, I tripped over it myself."

I'm so envious even though there's a lot of work to be done. Here in Texas, my parent's had a lake house and i had loops of paracord through my hammers and any tools that had holes in the handles, so I wouldn't drop them in the water. The water was only 8 foot deep under the dock but things never seemed to drop straight down. You might invest in some ratcheting wrenches so you don't have to take the wrench off to start another turn. Don't know if you could get some of those magnets they use in the magnet fishing videos. Seems they would automatically be drawn to the steel caisson. Thanks for the videos. Guess I should have read the comments before posting lol. I'm not the only one who's dropped a hammer or crescent wrench while over water.
