Lost my hives during a Tropical depression generated thunderstorm. 2 year old hives gone in a flash.. will start up again with new hives in 2 long langstroth hives.. easier bee keeping far easier. Gotta add you are a very special people. as some one said on here a beautiful spirit working with Mom you got my heart with that one.. Wife and I are in our 70s do everything together fear nothing stay dirty working this old Florida residential paradise ..Thank you

FWIW, in my limited experience, it is helpful to spray the swarm with sugar syrup to keep them from flying until I get them in the bucket or box.

As soon as the swarm starts to take to air, beat on something metal (trash can, etc) and they will drop and land to regroup again. Have done it and seen it done countless times. It really does work.

I think bees with pollen on their legs are the cutest little things. It makes them look even fuzzier. Too bad you couldn't catch the swarm. They must've been getting ready to leave by the time you got there. But glad you got some bees that were in need of re-homing. Good video 👍

I don't know when your swarming season starts but here in Florida it can be February one.So i start looking every week and pulling frames with swarm cells and making nucs.This helps in two ways.You start making nucs early and also you don't lose bees to the woods.It also gives the existing Queen more room to lay and she may not want to swarm if you catch it early.Please use all the swarm cells you can because they make the best Queens .Good luck bee framing!

When the colony began to swarm away, it may have been possible to stop them by spraying the cloud with a garden hose (misting them) and banging a hive tool on something metal; this mimics a thunderstorm. I’ve done this twice this season on swarms leaving my hives. One returned to the hive and was quickly split; the other dropped quickly into a low shrub next door and was easily captured. I keep an old 8 qt stockpot near the hives to use as a stool and to drop in burr comb; served well as the banging surface. Pleasure watching you work, and heartbreaking the story of of a caring beekeeper giving up his bees.

What we use to do when swarm starts flying is sprinkle water and throw lose soil at them to stop flying away..so the swarm don't go away... Try this idea once...

I was all set to give up beekeeping not long ago but things took a turn. I have caught two swarms this year and bought a couple nucs. Thanks to watching your channel I have a renewed enthusiasm. BUT, if I get disappointed in my efforts and things don't fare well, I'd be happy to send them to you. I would rather give them to someone with great passion than have a bunch of beeks beat me up on a price to sell them. I'd rather give than sell. Peace!

One thing I found is to spray some sugar water on them and it helps keep them from flying away Until you’ve captured The queen, in your case (Queens)

This is my third year beekeeping and each winter I've lost my bee's! First year it was the polar vortex, last winter they made it to the end of February. But after inspection I think it was Varrora. Again, I found myself talking and crying to Dead bee's! I live in Southern Wisconsin. I want to find cold tolerant, Varroa free bee's. Hahaha

Another awesome video!! After u used the term 'ankle biter', I had to read up on it. So now I know that an 'ankle biter' bee is one that is bred to chew the legs off of the Varroa mite parasite...killing the mite via blood loss. Tks for teaching me something new today!

Hahaha! I agree! I’ve caught many, but this was the first for me to have them take off as I was getting them. What’s funny is I had a feeling this was going to happen! The time of day, rain coming in... and as soon as I saw the main queen... I was scrambling to get her! It happens, but doing yt and being open is why I shared it. I thought for a moment to not, but I know I’ve been successful many many times and this one was different. Who’s to say a new beekeeper wouldn’t have this happen to them and think of how they’d feel.

I understand your compassion, i love my bees so much that if they someday decide to get aways from my hives i cry but those tears are goodbyes tears i feel very happy towards their decision. i have created a spirtiual connection to them and one day i stoped harvesting honey other people feel shocked towards me they say you keep doing all these job and you don't get anything from them rather you keep spending on them. really if you truly love something love is enough, you don't need anything to get from them cause love fulfill you more than honey. and someday your love let them free and thats why i cry, not because they decied to go but because they have give me a tremandous experience

What an amazing story!!!! I was able to catch a small swarm 2 weeks ago in some empty hives I had sat outside just in case a swarm came by looking for a home. I have yet to do an inspection on the hive as the weather has been so lousy here. I'm in Shenandoah County, very close to you, so you know what kind of weather I am speaking of. I would love for another swarm to come by and move into another empty hive of mine of for someone to call and to try and rescue a swarm. Your channel is amazing and I am so thrilled to have found you.

The FERRY to Kangaroo Island is southern Australia asks you 3 questions before boarding. Most important one: "Do you have any BEES with you?" Say what....I thought. Come to find out I learned about the KI Ligurian bees there and how they strive to protect them from 'outsiders'. Your passion for BEES is readily apparent. A+, or should it B...B+? Thanks.

when you see the swarm starting to lift off.....or if you see them pouring out of the hive.......start clanking on something.....couple blocks of wood.....or metal on metal.....loud noises....they will tend to land close by.....I suppose they think it is thunderstorms. It is great that you are able to help them......I probably would have offered to be stewards of their hives until they can get back on their feet. But their situation may not have been where they could feasibly continue....I share in your sorry for a fellow beekeeper making the decision to give up this amazing hobby. I am lucky enough to have 3 queens of Purdue's "Mite Biter" genetics. I sent my mom to their queen rearing class last year, and 3 of her grafts took. Unfortunately the class probably wont happen this year.

I'm surprised that the neighbor didn't call the owner of the hives (since he's right next door) and tell him they had their bee's in the yard. Perhaps the "master gardener" didn't want any more hives? Doesn't sound like he was doing anything for swarm prevention. If he in fact had "ankle bitters" (more expensive queens), I would have. Also, a frame of drawn comb with brood tends to speed up the transition onto the frame. Enjoyed the video.

Jim A Ankle biters chew away at the legs of varroa mites. You can see the effects looking with a magnifying glass at mites on a sticky board.

Keep in mind if you sell honey bees on comb in the state of Virginia. They have to be inspected by the state apiarist. Before I bring a swarm to one of my bee yards. I always do a might check and check for afb.

I made that comment toward the beginning of the video; before the offer for you to take the neighbor's hives. That's a great honor and you looked very touched at the offer to take the hives from the beekeeper who has to relocate. I've watched many of your videos and it's very obvious that you truly care and will everything you can to take the best care of those bees. As a first year beekeeper...I didn't know what to expect. How I would feel about the bees, if I would really enjoy it, etc... With the troubles we've had with our purple hive; I have realized that I have formed an emotional connection with them. It hurts to see that hive struggling. I get how painful it can be to give up a hive... it would certainly make it easier to know they were going to someone who really cared and I'm sure that was a big factor in his decision. I'm looking forward to the future videos featuring those hives.

If there are more queens then the bees make a ball shape around her , if you see it then definitely its more than one queen bee, and these swarm never settles unless one remains to their notice and rest queens are kept isolated
