I believe that's how it was originally. There was no federal income tax, and citizens paid taxes to their state however the state decided to collect taxes. The state would then pay taxes to the federal government based on population size.

The Feds have proven they can't be trusted with our money. That's a fact. I am not a high earner, I pay about 30% of my income to taxes but I would much rather give that to the state where I live and let the state deal with the federal government. I am tired of supporting the welfare world

When you have an administration that makes a decision that hurts the working class, then recognizes that it is hurtful, doubles down on that decision, and continues other policies that also hurt, it's pretty darned difficult to remain hopeful. Taxation without representation is unconstitutional. While that is true the average citizen doesn't get much say m how the government spends our money, without taxes we would not have public roads, sewers, water systems, military, firemen, police, social security, welfare, Etc. It would be nice if the spending were more transparent to the public along with who proposed the spending and who voted for it. We would then be allowed to vote out politicians spending tons of our money on goofy stuff and/or lining their friends pockets.That's representation. I guarantee politicians would be more careful with our tax dollars if their actions were visible. And why shouldn't we get to see, we are their employers.

Texas native - the issue with the Californians moving here is that they are trying to bring their nonsense ideas and policies that brought that state down to begin with here. They don’t seem to understand the insanity of repeating the same things and expecting different outcomes. Also, they are selling their houses in cali for 2-3million and coming here out bidding everyone on homes and artificially raising the cost of homes to the point where the people who actually live and work here can barely afford a home as well as increasing the rent costs due to low supply from the migration. Then when they get here they are snooty and rude. They judge people and look down on them instead of embracing the Texas culture.

7:00 I disagree with her, the reason why we have to pay more for childcare is not due to labor shortage, and the issue of labor shortage is an issue of our ever continuing diminish of work ethics and motivation to work in the States. People are becoming lazier and obsessed with material pleasures and validation. For asian families, they spend more than 22% of their income on their children as an 'investment' and some Jewish families do something similar in how they invest in their children's future while being penny pinchers in general. A lot of asians are like this too. Her argument is basically "let's just throw more money into a SYSTEM that can work more efficiently instead of being under the mercy of greedy businesses". Here's the thing, if you switch to a socialized welfare system, YOU DO NOT HAVE A CHOICE or alternatives. If you switch to a private/capitalist system, anyone can make their own insurance or childcare or healthcare clinic, and can compete with each other to provide the best and cheapest goods and service. THERE IS NO ROOM for price or quality competition in socialism/communism which this woman is suggesting, which isn't surprising considering she's from The Young Turks. In fact you can tell this woman knows next to nothing other than what she's heard, you can tell by how she speaks, she isn't very educated on anything she talks about.

Great shows! And the haircut looks good. I'm an accountant and I've worked with taxes for many years. Taxes are a necessary component to pay for some of the things that we need and regularly use. That being said, to Ben's point in the video, the government spends money unwisely which creates a lack of trust. If the government spent our tax dollars better, I don't think we would mind paying taxes as much as we do now. When we see things like IRS corruption, presidents lying about money they gave other countries, etc. it causes us to lose trust in paying taxes. More transparency and honesty will help the government to regain that lost trust. You should watch the movie 'Dave' with Kevin Kline. It's about a regular guy who becomes the president and how he handles things like finances. Great movie!

It wouldn't work. Taxes, while frustrating, are a necessity. Police, fire, sanitation, roads and infrastructure and public education are all paid through tax dollars. The reason we pay taxes is because the government doesn't make anything so it relies on the citizens to contribute a share of their earnings to pay for certain essential services. The argument can definitely be made that the tax dollars need to be spent better and more efficiently. But if nobody were to pay, there would be no teachers, police, firemen, sanitation, postal workers, etc.
