You have our sympathies guys and congratulations for not panicking! We have ended up across the river twice this year due to the strong flow and both times kind people helped save the day! Don't beat yourself up Chris. This kind of thing can happen to anyone when the unexpected happens and I have been boating close to 60 years now. Ropes sticks and muscle can get you out of most sticky situations. No one hurt and so long as you learn from the accident, your skills will improve.

Chris that wasn’t necessarily your fault there were a few contributing factors involved so don’t get disheartened and go beating yourself up, I’ve watched heaps of narrowboat vlogs and you’re not the first to do this. The bright side is you made new friends and reality is there isn’t as much damage as there could have been, you have also learnt that people on the canal really care about each other. Honestly my heart goes out to you both. Beccs you seemed to keep your cool through the whole incident but your heart must have been racing. I guess we’ll have to wait to see the exact outcome of the damage, just hope it’s superficial. Thinking of you guys. 💕

@@TheNomadicCrobot Downstream bridge navigation should be a major and early chapter in inland seamanship books so that people won't have to learn the had way, though this video should help. Videos that help others learn from your mistakes are among the best, so hopefully this one can end up paying for the damage. The same goes for towing, since the pilot of that cruiser could learn a few things about maintaining steerage during tows. As you can see twice over, slow speeds don't solve everything is strong currents or winds, though if they are really strong, one might achieve forward motion while maintaining steerage way in reverse. You can also see why bow thrusters are worthwhile for many. Getting pinned against a bridge can be even worse for sailboats.

@@alan6832 I agree, that cruiser driver needed some advice. should have also had lines attached to both sides of the boat, pulling from one side is difficult. I guess their first time at towing, I hate it, it's not easy.

Hey Guys, don’t let crash put you off. This is how you learn, when going with the flow on a river, slowing down is the worst thing you can do, as you lose steering. If you had kept a bit more power on the back end probably wouldn’t have started to twist. At least no one was hurt, any thing else can be fixed. Keep up the good work with the channel, I always looked forward to your videos. Chin up guys 👍

yes someone else said that, now looking back it seams that part of the bridge was missing its bollard so made things extra tricky, were actually just having a week off but are eager to get going again, thanks for comment James

When you slow down approaching the bridge you lose steering, you need to keep the power on to allow you to steer. Counter intuitive but you need water flowing over the rudder to be able to steer. Well recovered don’t worry next time go for it, approach slowly then gun it to keep the boat lined up. 😊

I run aground on a massive houseboat in Australia and found manoeuvring weight in the boat and using some human power jumping on the appropriate end … then lots of left right on the wheel and up and down on the power got us off after a few hours trying after an overnight stuck! The jubilation when you are freed 🙌🙏

Many factors at play james,there was infact a very fast current ..well for a amateur narrowboater like my self anyway, Also my inexperience of getting a large 60foot boat through a small bridge enterence on a bend that was missing its bumper. 3 other boats that afternoon had hit it too...so I can only imagine how many boats collide with it daily over the years, mine was by far the worst but again that's my inexperience. We were told after most boaters in the area us the exit as an entrance as its an easier pass through. We live and learn I'm sure it won't be the last, hope your having a fun adventure on your narrowboat

Exactly my thoughts…. The river is perfectly flat,calm and looks steady. He’s probably embarrassed and that’s why he tried to say that it was the current etc. people who don’t live or own a canal boat will fall for his tale, but people who live on a boat will rumble his excuse straight away. I’ve lived on my 57X10 widebeam for the last 3 years and I love it, I’d rather die than live in a house again. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done. I’m 42 now so hopefully I’ve still got a few more years cruising yet!!

This is actually a very good video....All be it, a caution to other boaters. There is a saying "Horses for courses" and this demonstrates that Narrow Boats are designed for canals and not fast flowing rivers. You were very lucky to escape as you did. Persistence is the rule of the day, and quite honestly the language was very subdued considering the situation!! Everything in life is a learning curve, so please do not be discouraged, you have just learned something, with trauma or whatever else. One observation, if the tiller is 90 Deg to the stern, you won’t steer anywhere, as the water is hitting the rudder straight on. Tie up, have a kiss and cuddle, and any damage is repairable. You are both safe at the end of the day. The Old Brdige can be repaired 😅

Just remember for future the back end of the boat when steering moves first so having the tiller facing the bridge when you were side on is pushing the back end up against the bridge even more. Hope that helps. If you think that flow is pretty strong the Nene is a total different level most of the time. 👍🏼

I’m by no means a boater but we do hire canal boats 4 times a year, I would say, you did very well, so many people struggle and get stuck, just most of the time it’s in a nice relaxing location on a canal. You guys were just unlucky at the location, it’s also much more tricky on a river so you guys will be absolutely fine! You kept calm and that’s the main thing! The only thing I would say, and this is obviously just how it looked in the video and I could be completely wrong! Is to remember they turn from the middle but steer from the back, so when you had the tiller pointing at the bridge and also trying to push away from the back with your bargepole you were fighting each other. Anyway, keep going, you guys have got this! Such a fun Channel, don’t forget how much you make people smile, you effect and help a lot of people that you have never met and that is a very powerful thing.

Thanks for your lovely comment Ryan, I think there were alot of factors at play looking back, weve never really had any problems using the rivers in the 2 years having the boat, and have been on far far rougher water, I think maybe being a bit over confidence on my behalf at a bridge on a bend along with a fast current were the main issues. quite a few people have come out and said how alot of people struggle with this bridge and that you should really use the exit instead of the entrance , so the bridge is renowned for being tricky, and it was also missing its number on that side too, so that explains why so many boaters end up hating the bridge, yes I think once we got stuck it was. a loosing battle thanks for your suggestions your absolutely right, on wards and upwards, we won't let it beat us, thanks again

You have to remember that there is much more control when your boat is traveling faster through the water. To get the correct control on such a relatively fast flowing river, you must keep your speed high relative to the water. This might seem faster than you you might feel is comfortable if you look to the bank. It was disaster waiting to happen when you decided to go slowly, you were simply drifting with the river rather that cruising through it. Lesson learned I hope and no serious damage 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Damage could have been worse. Pride and confidence may be tarnished but a valuable lesson learned and also maybe a few friends gained. As a bonus we now have another 10 videos of repairing the damage and touching up the paint.

I think it's fair to say, everyone who follows you both, our hearts go out to you. The main thing is that neither of you were hurt, and the boat can be repaired. It would be easy to say these little problems don't come along, but that is not true. I have a boat on the Norfolk Broads, and it can be very tidal, with wind being another factor, and before you know it, it's out of control, it has happened to me, i am still learning, but i will not give up. Do not let this incident put you off, you are both such a lovely couple, keep smiling, and get that boat finished and get out there ! Buy me a coffee on the way to help.

Yeah, a gnarly situation. when you did go through I noticed you were tillered into the bridge, if you want to avoid hitting something with the back end, push the tiller away from the thing you don't want to hit. if you had tillered away you'd have made it through without hitting anything. it does look like a tough obstacle tho, the sort of thing you'd figure out with time. keep going, you're learning every step of the way.

@@TheNomadicCrobot when you turn the tiller, you're moving the back of the boat. so if you want to move the back of the boat to the right, it's rudder to the left (tiller to the right) and some power to get water flow over the rudder

Welcome to the Barford bridge club! If/when you try to navigate this bridge again always go downstream through the upstream arch! We had a boat on the Great Ouse for 20+ years so know this navigation hazard well

it really is, and quite a few people have come out and said its a regular thing for boats to go in to, what lovely locals to come and help, I feel there should have been a bit of a warning really as the bridge was missing its bumper

When you consider what your boat weighs, the downstream current pushing continuously, once you're on an obstruction it's very difficult to get off. We had similar on the Macclesfield canal at Bosley Locks. Just as we were lining up to enter lock 12 and go under bridge 56a, we managed to run aground on a shelf that is normally higher in the water. The heavy rains had increased the draught above the shelf allowing the boat to lay on about midway between the bow and stern. tried pushing but there was extra water and the current pushed back. In the end, lots of alternating between forward and reverse combined with tiller waggling, we got off.

Strong currents at the moment and you are not the only ones to get proper stuck . Holly The Cafe Boat was truly grounded and needed CRT to come and get them free, even they nearly tipped the boat over. EWater levels seem to be low, despite strong stream advisories an so much rain . It happens to the best.

Great learning curve, nobody hurt, live to fight another day. It may just have been the editing, but there was a point early on where it looked like you were steering as if driving a car, so tiller hard to port to keep the bow towards the arch, but that started the stern moving to port towards the bridge and bank, and once the current caught it you never had chance to recover with the flow pushing your stern into the bridge and a lack of steerage as you slowed down and were just carried with the current. Very narrow! And on a bend. Challenging. Thanks for sharing. Seeing these dramas unfold really helps other people think things through.

it really is all about learning, I had about 5 seconds to correct what was going wrong and with lack of experience probably made things even worse, a tight corner with a heavy river flow, and 5 other boats went into the bridge too while we were there...it seams to have a bit of a name for it. im sure with a bit more experience it would have worked out alot better for us, thanks for your comment

Phew! I think the best tactic is to approach dead slow then apply plenty of throttle just before turning to enter the arch. It’s water flow over the rudder you need for steering, not raw speed. But what do I know; if I ever owned a boat, I’d avoid any waterway with the word “river” in it for a good few years.

thanks for that, it was very stressful but we managed to overcome come, rivers can be very scary...and it didnt even look to bad until it happened, the thing with this bridge was that its actually missing its bumper....so no wonder we went into it, what a nightmare trip haha

Well done for showing it warts and all. Dont worry, the experience will aid you massively. 1st time i ever tried taking our narrowboat out i managed to hit the rudder and pop it out so i had no control whilst been blown into my new neighbours boats by the wind. Another time our engine cut out on the canal and therefore we hsd no way of stopping 😮 its all part of the fun, put it down to experience and move on 😊

Trouble is when you give the engine loads you're drawing water from under the boat. to go too fast is always bad with boats cos you ain't got brakes and a boat steers from the rear.

Rivers are always more difficult than canals. Going downstream is always worse than going upstream as you will inevitably be moving faster over the ground. Looking at any bridge you will always see battle scars from many many previous boaters who got it wrong too. Did notice that you were trying to turn away from the bridge by pushing the tiller to your left when in fact it was the rear of the boat that you needed to clear, but that's an instinct you will get right with practice. Keep your chins up and hope that things get better going forward 😊

Looking at the bridge the nudge boards that are meant to help you avoid hitting it where broken and missing so it's clear many people have had a problem navigating it and whoever supposed to maintain those boards aren't doing a very good job of it

Your absolutely right we noticed this after, it seams after quite a few collisions it has sunken now any boat that even slightly taps it will scrape there poor boat
