As someone who has spent her life around horses it just makes me so angry to see a horse in this condition. If you can’t look after an animal ask for help or give it away to someone who can look after it. You don’t just leave it to wither away. I’m so glad to see this horse was rescued in time.

I’ve said this elsewhere, but it bears repeating. I’m a person that has been afraid of horses all my life (I’m 52), but my wife LOVES horses and has wanted one all her life. Long story short, she acquired and elderly rescue horse that was every bit as skinny as this poor fella. The day we got him, I went with her to help unload him where we are boarding him with a friend of hers. It had been a long day of traveling and visiting their farrier, so the poor old fella was plain tuckered out. They needed to check him over, so I plucked up my courage as best as I could, overcame my fear and held his lead rope while they were looking him over and cleaning him up. I don’t know what he sensed, but he laid his head on my chest like it was the first kindness he’d felt in a very long time and damned if that horse didn’t worm his way into my heart on the spot. Despite my fear, I couldn’t help but love on him and reassure him we were going to take care of him and he was going to be OK. Fast forward 8 months, and we’ve got him filled out as far as the vet and our boarder thinks we should take him for his 28 year old frame. He’s looking so good now, the people whom we acquired him from who had initially rescued him did not even recognize him until we were talking to them about him at a local gathering. That horse awakened something in me I didn’t even know was there, he has changed my life. He may not have many years left, but I am determined they will be happy ones, and I now know that is what I want to do the rest of my life. Even if I can only care for one horse at a time, I will be caring for horses that desperately need to be rescued for the rest of my days.

All I meant is that with all that goes on in the world, with people doing horrific unprovoked things to other people right now all over the planet, is it any wonder people do such things to animals? They are far more defenseless. Also, humans have full consciousness and will realise and understand the cruelty in all its maliciousness. The poor horse wants to not feel pain, hunger or thirst, and get some affection whether from animal or human. Their understanding of cruelty is very different. Both truly awful of course but consciousness adds a different layer. And if humans are prepared to hurt each other knowing the deep lifelong psychic trauma that they can cause each other... well I'm not at all surprised or heartbroken (very sadly) that people are cruel or utterly negligent to animals. I'm not saying it doesn't have an impact on an animal's mental well-being, but animals often live in the moment. Very different to us. So yea, not disagreeing with your sentiment at all, just saying there are people so rotten out there, I'm past being surprised, or heartbroken.

The work you did with this horse is amazing. We had similar situation with a horse that was nearly dead. The previous owners just gave him to us for free. He couldn't stand so we had to lift him all the time. He had severe problems with his liver and was already 17 years old. This horse reminded me of him. We moved him to another stabling and took good care of him. Unfortunately he lost almost all his vision in one eye during the treatment, but he became strong, active and healthy and lived 12 more years. He was such a great lovely boy.

Fed the wild possums quality scraps (it's really cold tonight) that a stray cat ended up eating some of and my cats and dog are warm and happy. What a good life!
