@mikejr550 the secondary provides additional CEMF and opposition to primary current. There are also 3 different ways a secondary can be configured which also affects how much a shorted secondary winding effects the primary ramp. It can be wired to coil +, a constant ground, or to another coil tower like in a waste spark coil.

This is a great way to find an idle issue that isn't smooth. You don't have to have a misfire code...it takes a decent amount of misfires to trip a code. You can simply and quickly test the gap that each coil can produce and find the relationship between them. If they are way off replace the coil because the power balance of the engine is way off. Learned a lot from this video.

I never had one explode on me ... but I did get mad one time working on my '79 Mercury Capri 4-banger turbo (ignition problem) when I was 20, and put the handle of my hammer right through the top of the battery in anger. The acid splashed up all over me, my face, and got in my eyes. Luckily it was winter - just grabbed a handful of snow and rubbed the crap out of my face and eyes - got it before it even started burning, thankfully! Cat-like reflexes at that age! My clothes, however didn't fare so well, as you can imagine, LOL! When they came out of the wash, they looked like I stood in front of 10 shotguns loaded with #8 at close range. Mom wasn't too happy about that one ... 🤣 Learned a valuable lesson (a couple, actually) that day!! There's always something to learn with Danner, I was absolutely convinced that ANY spark was a good spark, I wouldn't have even entertained a present but weak spark as being a problem. The thing that changed my mind is the draw of the gest light weakening the spark further and enhancing the misfire. Further to this and something that was either unnoticed or not mentioned in the video was that when the spark gap of the weak coil was being tested the draw of the spark weakend the sister spark and enhanced the misfire pro ing the theory. Again good work Paul.

@@ScannerDanner Sir, my i20 1.2 petrol has exactly the same coil pack layout as in 7.27 time. One coil pack has cylinder number 1 and 4, and the other has 2 and 3. Each coil pack is controlled by 2 wires each which means each secondary circuits are controlled by individual primary coil circuit. Now, there's less spark coming from the one high tower of first coil pack and same is happening in the second coil pack too. I checked for resistances reading of the secondary and primary circuit individually in both of the coil packs. They gave same readings about 14k in secondary circuits when tested with multimeter from one tower to another of the same coil pack. I wonder why such less spark is produced on one tower within the same coil pack where the 2 towers are controlled by the same primary coil circuit???? If one is showing less spark, why the same less spark is not produced in the other tower of the same coil? Please do really help me find solutions!! Another good video, as usual. By the way, I believe the reason yo were only seeing the bad coil trace rather than an alternating good/bad is that the shorted coil had a faster current ramp, therefore tripped the trigger level before the other (good) coil trace could trip it every time.
@ScannerDanner5 жыл бұрын
Best explanation yet but they still alternate and that trigger level was set to a point where both crossed it. Unless there is an internal clock on the sampling that has a delay before it actually draws the waveform??
@patrickl68665 жыл бұрын
@@ScannerDanner . That's a good question. My answer assumes it was set up for a single trigger and it catches the 1st one that crosses the trigger level in time (which is the bad coil due to it hitting the current level quicker/steeper ramp).

@ScannerDanner5 жыл бұрын
sometimes that tail can be induced by having the amp clamp too close to the coil housing. I believe that is why we were seeing the large tails but a large tail can also indicate an open plug or wire
@mightymagnum88115 жыл бұрын
I have a question. When carrying out such spark gap jumping tests, (on let's say a perfectly good coil), when the gap is increased until the spark no longer jumps, doesn't that immediately cause coil damage which had not been there before? Surely even just one spark that finds no easy part to ground is going to bore a channel through the coils internal insulation to reach the opposite end of the coil winding internally, and thereby initiate a channel of weak insulation which will eventually come back as a damaged coil customer, once some other factor put the ignition coil insulation under high load. I do this jump test myself, but I always try not to provide a gap larger than 10mm, lest when I do, the spark can't jump the gap and coil insulation is immediately damaged with even just one spark that can't reach ground. I realise the damage might not be apparent immediately, but I can't see how damage is not occurring. That enegy has to be going somewhere, so the only place I know of is a direct internal short, breaking down the internal insulation? This is only my assumption, so the question is, can anyone give a scientific answer as to why even just one internal shorted spark doesn't do damage? Thanks
@throttlebottle59065 жыл бұрын
one thing to add, on the double spark plug shared coils. bad plugs and wires can cause weak spark when testing, since it's using the other wire and plug as the ground path on other post. so bad wire end or high resistance from broken down wire can cause it to look weak when testing. I resistance test the plug wires first or use a known good wire and plug for the other side temporarily
@ScannerDanner5 жыл бұрын
Think about this my friend, you are correct to a point, but an open plug or wire would NOT cause the spark to be weak on both sides of the coil! You would have to have BOTH plugs and or wires open for this to happen and that doesn't ever happen. This was a valid test and the only variable here was the dwell time issue I mentioned.

Thanks for a very detailed video. When you first checked the coil and found you had a weak spark my first thought was what about the spark plug or spark plug wire on the other end of the coil. Since pulling one wire out of the coil and checking the spark you still have another spark plug and wire in its secondary circuit. Couldn't you have simply grounded one side of the coil and then checked the spark on the other end of the coil? If you had a good spark at that time then you would know the problem is in the plugs and wires. If the spark was still weak them you would know that it was a bad coil or a bad coil drive circuit. What are your thoughts on my logic?

@ScannerDanner4 жыл бұрын
No sir. There shouldn't be any unturned fuel but if there was, it wouldn't be any different than a no compression misfire. Remember you have to compress the af ratio to get it to burn
@lh984 жыл бұрын
ScannerDanner okay but what about in a different engine type let’s say a single cylinder engine in a riding lawn mower. If your one cylinder has weak spark and fails to ignite on the compression stroke (too much pressure for weak spark to ignite anything) wouldn’t you then possibly have a backfire out the exhaust or see some flaming out the carburetor if the spark is intermittent? I’ve seen single magnet magneto on a flywheel that had weak/intermittent spark that would flame out the carb and sometimes backfire out the exhaust which must have been failure to ignite with that weak spark or something had to have been out of time or valves not functioning correctly but upon inspection valves liquid tested fine. The magneto fires each time that flywheel magnet hits it which would be once in the tdc compression stroke and again when it completes a revolution at tdc after the top of the exhaust stroke
@ScannerDanner4 жыл бұрын

During this period i found that dipping the clutch at highway speed and cranking wouldn't start the engine, but releasing the clutch would get it running again. Lots of money spent between diagnostic fees and parts cannon. One shop said it needed coils, another said fuel pump, another said cam sensor. (Cam and crank hall sensors are integrated in one unit) I've replaced all those plus related items like plugs wires fuel filter etc. Been chasing this problem for two months now. When you pull a plug wire off of a coil you absolutely HAVE to give the spark somewhere to go (which is why I use my testligh) or you can damage the coil and or the driver that controls the coil.

I think I saw those are 2 coil packs, for 2 cylinders each, wouldn't it be wise to replace both? if one went bad, chances are the other one is close to go bad too..... or is it a single coil pack with four outputs?
@ScannerDanner5 жыл бұрын
It is a single coil pack assembly. Two individual coils housed together sharing a common power feed on the primary side.

Would you not do an injector clean to as the fuel wasn't burning correctly

Not needed on a port injection system

@@ScannerDanner didnt realise it was port injection, if it had been direct inject would you have done cyl 1&4 or all of them?

My 03 120xxx miles just stoped , crank crank no start , cap, rotor , plugs, spark plugs replaced. Has sparks orange color from coil, and the wires looks like a week spark. Gas pressure fine all fuse fine , starter fluid on the TB and no signal . What else should it be ?

It's not always that simple! And it pays to have multiple tools at your disposal! Along with your expert guidance and instruction!! I once had a friend need to fix a misfire! And without spending money on the parts cannon ammo! I did all I could, without some higher tech equipment!! It was a 97 GM 5.7, with the dist. cap with the scientifically designed spark plug wire outputs, oriented towards the proper side of the engine. There was a low priced replacement dist cap installed, when he got it! It ran well, except for the obvious fuel spider issue, common on that vintage engine! But, shortly he developed a misfire, that even caused the MIL to flash! It was just that I couldn't figure out what was causing it. It turned out to be the cross talk inside a poorly designed dist. cap!! The 5&7 were sparking on each other, inside the cap, where the lines were close together, and fire was jumping between the two!! The spark was jumping from 5 to 7, and then 7 to 5, causing an odd misfire that I couldn't decipher on my own!! It took another buddy with a Snap On scanner, to be able to see what was happening, and when!! A new Delco dist. cap and a rotor fixed the problems! But, you could tell the old ones were brand new, and you couldn't see where they were cross talking inside!! It was just that spark was jumping, deep inside the cap, between the two line! No continuity! Just cross talk!! I checked for spark at each plug, and deduced that the coil wasn't bad! I figured that each plug was getting fire, and could tell no other issue for a sudden misfire! As we needed to replace the fuel injection spider anyway, I went ahead and did that job, before going any further! After that, it ran great, except for the oddly intermittent and changing misfire!! I even ran a test light along each wire, looking and listening for leaking spark!! I just finally gave up! When the scanner was hooked up, I wasn't around, but was told what was up before the new cap and rotor was installed!! IT ALL CAME BACK TO ME!! Some cheaper aftermarket dist cap and rotor would cause issues just like that, back in the day! I also got side tracked on the fact that 7 of the 8plugs were brand spanking new, platinum tipped plugs, but one was an older, likely an original style, regular plug! I thought an owner was having issues, and replaced them, which didn't fix the inj spider problems, and broke a new plug during installation, and just put an old plug back in! I wanted to get another matching newer plug, but he refused! He still has the older plug in there to this day!! Just having you demonstrate what to look for, what to listen for, and how to check for it all, is priceless!! And I did most of it!! Some times, you just need a scanner, or a rich customer, willing to pay for parts cannon ammo!! Lol THANKS FOR SHARING!! Say "Hey" to your mama!! ;-)

You can use the test light test on the cap end of the plug wires. Pull them off and make sure they all jump past the towers. The cross firing ones will NOT jump the same gap :-) Nice job and write up my friend. Thank you!

Wouldn't the sharp current ramp be a shorted primary? I'd think so since you're measuring primary current. Could you explain why you know that it's secondary? I'd love to know the theory.

I'd love to share an image with you, but I can't here. Will you copy and paste this link and your comment in a new post on my forum? It's free to join. (Post it here www.scannerdanner.com/forum/scannerdanner-book-questions-and-discussion.html) Let me know when you post it (comment back here) and I'll share a waveform for you of a shorted primary winding compared to a shorted secondary winding. I also have a video is want you to watch where I mistakenly thought I had a shorted primary but it was a shorted secondary

Watch these videos when you have time! This first one has a shorted primary, and it cooked the driver in the PCM. "Ford 5.4 shorted coil primary winding and bad computer driver" kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2XVZoKZfbNogsk This second one has a shorted secondary winding. "How to test for a shorted ignition coil (Honda Distributor)" kzbin.info/www/bejne/npXCk4d5qNN3bdU And this third one I mistakenly called it a shorted primary winding when it was actually the secondary. "How to test an ignition coil/module with a test light (distributor ignition) - GM" kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3Wum2RvfdObmpI Would love to hear your comments after watching these. I have many more too btw

@@ScannerDanner Thanks!! those are great videos. I guess i just don't understand what the correlation is between the waveforms that shows a short in primary vs secondary. The GM distributor video I understand the ohms readings prove what you suspected, just not familiar with the waveform analysis.
@ScannerDanner23 сағат бұрын
@mikejr550 do you understand why there is a ramp effect on coil of wire that is building a magnetic field? It's called counter electromotive force. That building/moving magnetic field is actually generating voltage and is an opposing force. With a primary winding shorted, there is no building magnetic field. With a secondary shorted, you still have a primary that is producing that counter EMF, just not as much since the secondary is shorted. I have some shorted injector videos that will help too
@mikejr55022 сағат бұрын
@@ScannerDanner Ok that makes sense. So think of the secondary as a shock absorber or damper on the work that the primary is doing. primary short will be steep almost instant spike and secondary will show a ramp but sharp start to the ramp. Is that correct?
