When there is uncertainty in the economy, collectors will go for a deal but may sit on a gamble.

Whoever bought that Whiz #2(1) got the steal of the auction to me. It’s truly a major Golden Age key and a decent-looking book for under $50,000!

I feel lucky enough to have page 4. That was actually out of the mile high collection even though it's not noted on the holder. There's no way I could ever afford the book.But it is a cool book

Another great market analysis (you are the best in this area imho). Skipped over the Eerie chapter (once the what i feel is CBCS bashing was in the recap). I know you don't think or want us to agree with you on everything, but i hope you will take a more nuanced approach when it comes to sharing your opinion on them. Many of us have our own reasons for wanting to send them our business. I use both because their should not be one option for certification. PSA soon to join the fray. Also, i think Heritage has just been having too many close choice material auctions back to back.

That Superman 147 is insane. The only rationalization i can offer is that it's an early 1960s Superman with a nice cover in 9.8 which are very rare. But not $50K rare.

I think you were remarkably accurate on your Fantastic Comics #3 estimate. Given that it sold for "only" $40,800 4 years ago, what indicated that it would jump to your estimate of $84,000 (very close to actual close of $90,000). I would have assumed it might increase 10% per year and would have estimated $59,700.

It was how much suspense 3 had jumped recently. Those two seem to move kind of together.

Thanks for the excellent recap video, Ryan. If you see this and have a minute or two, any idea what the heck is going on with X-Men #59?? It's already at nearly $23,000. Granted, nice copy, but the previous sale in a 9.8 (according to GPA) was $5,760! It's not a key book or particularly rare. 12 in a 9.8. Thanks!

Sometimes things just sell well outside any expected range. No real explanation for it other than someone has a lot of money and they don’t care to wait for another to come up.

Comic books are not an investment. They are a hobby. The prices have to remain in the range of what a hobby can afford.

If you compare the CGC label color in the Action 1 3.0 part of the video, you can see distinct color differences in the CGC labels, as well as the books, so, side by side the difference is probably not as vivid. I think the most recent image is closer to reality on both.

Don't you think the recent Christine Farrell DC Collection, which exceeded your estimates, had an impact? Even "whales" have limited $ to spend. Of course, the outlier for the Farrell collection was the Superman #1 which sold well below your expectation.

That Eerie 1 looks like a 6.5 IMO
@doctorshawn3461Ай бұрын
Yep exactly what I was thinking. It had a stain in the top left corner, dust shadows, a lower left spine split, spline flecking, small chips. I had it around a 6.5 to 7.5 at the most

That Action 3.0 was recently re-slabbed so it was graded twice as a 3.0; but compared to the other 3.0 it appears over-graded or others are under-graded. Either way just not as nice, IMO.
@doctorshawn3461Ай бұрын
There was patchy weakness across the board. I haven't bought much in the past 4-6 months, been mostly pounding money into the stock market (even at bitcoin as soon as Trump was announced the winner) and making tremendous returns. There is only so much money to go around. I don't consider comics as investments so when I buy books it eats out of my stock returns. Also, very importantly for this auction, pretty much no one outside the USA will be buying since all foreign currencies are at multi year lows versus the US dollar, and the premium you have to eat on the exchange is ridiculous at these levels.
@doctorshawn3461Ай бұрын
Also, if the Action 1 doesn't sell that is kind of a bad omen for comics. Like, if no one wants to buy the best book in the hobby, what does that say about the hobby? Not to be a downer, I am just trying to tell it like it is. EDIT: I do agree with you about the reserve, I get turned off when I see books on reserve...like just sell privately if you want a minimum price, don't put it up for auction where you should get fair market value

Rich people are very selective and this book didn't get their attention. The color strike hurt it. Swag said this book had early color touch that quietly went away. Maybe others knew something was ”off" with it. Action #1.
@AutomaticComicsАй бұрын
It’s always been a blue label. The book sold originally back in like 2002 or 2004 and was a blue label then too. There did apparently used to be a graders note that said small amount of color touch, but that’s allowed in blue labels and we regularly see books get huge numbers with that note. It’s possible they had it removed when they got it recased. Or it’s possible it was a mistake from when it was originally graded over 20 years ago. Since I’m not the owner, I can’t say for sure on those details.
