Needs to be said...All of us need to fully appreciate the honesty and transparency Yvonne and Friesian Horses Channel presents. Yvonne puts it out there for all to see regardless of any potential negative feedback from viewers. Yvonne could easily have not included the difficult first days of the weaning process and just put out the videos of the " feel good effective results" after the fact. In this way we get to actually see the way it actually goes. As always, Yvonne has stayed true to the goals of this channel. To entertain and educate everything about the Friesian horses. Owning and especially breeding horses is a 24/7/365 job and is hard work and also stressful as so much to worry about constantly. Goed zo Friesian Horses Channel. 👏👏👏

Goed zo pake jeffje. That's correct, and i apreciate yvonne for this and all her videos. I knew nothing about horses, and following this channel and because of this also other channels, i will be an expert in no time. And i understand people to be worried, but say mad and angry things to yvonne and also to mods makes me sad. Lucky she showd already videos from those weaned foals before this heartbreaking moments. And i felt bad only looking them, so i know that yvonne her heart was broken. This because she love all the horses.💞💖💞

I ADMIRE YVONNE SO MUCH AND HAVE A HUGE AMOUNT OF RESPECT FOR HOW GREAT SHE IS WITH ALL OF THE HORSES AND EVERY ANIMAL THAT COMES INTO HER CARE!! I WAS JUST SAYING I COULD FEEL HOW UNIEK WAS MISSING RISING STAR - I MISSED MY DAUGHTER WHEN SHE STARTED KINDERGARTEN - SHE WAS THE YOUNGEST AND MY "SIDEKICK" LEFT AND I MISSED HER!! I think the way that Yvonne weans the foals is one of the best ways I have seen. The foals were already ignoring their moms in the pasture, the mares didn't seem to care if the foals spent the day playing and not hanging out with them. After separation, the mares were not frantic - yes, they wondered what's going on with the foals & Uniek was a little more concerned than the others - but they weren't pacing or racing the fence line & weren't neighing in desperation. Day 2, the foals were eating, the mares were eating. Horses that are highly anxious do not eat. When they do begin eating, you know they are calming down. The foals/moms are not completely separated - which is a widespread technique for weaning. They could hear & see each other and consequently the anxiety was going down, not up. At their age, that will lower the anxiety rather than raising it. ALSO they are still in the same barn, with the same people - familiar sights and sounds. And as happens sometimes, the foals also look to the humans for familiar company. Great Job - and great that you are willing to adjust if needed.

This was a channel that youtube recommended to me based on what I watch. Thanks to Yvonne & staff I've come to love the Friesian breed. My area of experience is in hunters/jumpers in the US ( a million years ago) so the breeding aspect of the business is new to me. For those who have no horsey experience and are unsure if they're watching good horsemanship or bad horsemanship, good horsemanship is when the horses are happy and healthy (these are) and the humans handling them are happy, calm and clearly love what they do (again these are). There are a lot of different ways to be a good horseman or woman but to presume that you are now an expert based on a handful of videos would be wrong in the extreme. I love seeing and learning about different aspects of the horse business and I look forward to watching Yvonne & Team Friesian do their jobs even if it's mucking out stalls. It brings back so many happy memories. Sometimes the decisions a barn manager has to make are difficult. Our part (the viewer) is not to criticize but to encourage the team to continue to allow us to watch the day to day operations. Go Team Friesian!

I keep thinking someone said before we found out he would be staying with stall g that he would return home when he was weaned at about 10 months old but maybe I'm mixing things up with another video . But I still think he needed a little more time with mom in her heart I think Yvonne maybe wondered that to but possibly she is worried about the new baby . It seems like Uniek had a very short time to heal from the still born I wish her well with the stillborn and other health issue and age I worry about her but I'm a pro worry wart not a horse pro and I'm sure they do whats best and safe . As I have gone thru life, I have always felt that all animals have feelings, experiences and emotions similar to us humans. This is a topic on its own, but why I had to write today was how much Uniek’s behaviour reminded me of my own forced ‘weaning’ when my daughter was 11 months. I had Thyroid cancer and I needed surgery etc. I had so much milk and I was not ready, neither was my baby. In the residential stay I did exactly what Uniek did - the coming back for another look, needing to be close, those nurses were tough. Uniek went into the meadow and I was told to go for a long walk, I sneaked back and was sent away…… so similar Love you Uniek ❤️

I appreciate that you allowed yourself to show this difficult and painful process from start to finish. I know that you will always rely on your instincts in meeting the needs of all involved. The mares are pregnant and they need to have their bodies back. Most foals are never going to like being weaned. Or most mothers. Inthe wild they are pregnant every year and the same process takes place Your sorrow for Uniek and Rising Star was evident. I can only guess at how much , if its this bad for us. Uniek and Reintje will be completely ok with this in another few days when their milk drys up, hormones, not just emotions are playing a part still in this first couple of days.. Same applies to the foals... just 'not being allowed out all day to the pasture' will be another reason responsible for some of the anxiety they're showing at the moment, Please everyone.. rest assured Stal G are extremely knowledgeable and well practised at weaning. It is the Dutch way to wean their foals all together at the same time, so no foal has to do this alone, this is very important, they have each other, their siblings... that they have spent as much time with as they have their mems, their own bonds become very much stronger through this period. We have watched the last 2 years of weaning and the outcome is always good, you only have to look at the last 2 years groups and see that all young'uns come through this and grow into very well rounded individuals... none of them suffer from anxiety separation past these first few days, because none of them are ever alone. All the doubters will see for yourselves over the next few videos.. Please quit critising Yvonne and Rein and show them the respest they deserve as experienced breeders 🤐

When I worked at a stable a few years ago, there were 2 horses, mother and son, that the breeder let the son go too long before being weaned. As an adult horse, he was unmanageable and almost unridable unless he was directly with his mom. She was calmer about it, but also couldn’t be separated by more than a couple hours if he was being ridden. They HAD to be put into the stall while they were separate for riding or vet visits or they would run through fences or kick down doors to be together. Weaning is sad, like when your kids leave home and start their lives. It’s sad, but necessary.

Every mare different but that Sounds more like they were horse sour sometimes they just attach to one horse, we had a mare her filly was 3 years old and still on the booby we did not let it go that long we got them from an old man who had just let them in the field alone for almost 3 years it was kind of funny because the mother was a 14.2 hands and the daughter was 15.3 hands so it was odd seeing her drink but they were fine separated for riding and stuff then we separated them finally for the first 3 days they had a fit but then they were over it completely thankfully in a week it was over so I guess we lucked out

I wondered what might have happened if Ziffora had lived, then Uniek would have been without a foster colt - or if Star had lived, Rising Star might not have found such a wonderful foster mom. Everything does happen for a reason as hard as it may be! Thank you again for sharing this weaning saga, it's quite something! I know everyone will calm down, but can see how hard this is on all of you. Funny though how Sjirkje and Richtsje are like "yeah it's all good!" with their foals gone. Last year there was something different. The tree M-fillies were weaned together a time before MT was weaned as the fillies are all together born in February/March. So the fillies were weaned and after a short time they were together with Reintje and the younger MT (he was born in May) in the meadow. So Reintje was a kind of babysitter for the girls and so it was no problem to wean MT on time as he stayed more and more together with the girls and become their own little foal herd.

The hollering is the one reason we always completely separated mares and foals - the foals were loaded up on a transport truck and shipped to a completely different property for a period of weeks. By the time the transport arrived at the farm where they were going to stay, they had forgotten all about Mom and were ready to start their lives as big boys and girls. The mares couldn't hear their foals, settled down very quickly forgot them. When the weanlings were returned, they didn't even recognize each other. Just worked for us.

@@raraavis7782 I've found out-of-sight/sound to be the best way to do it - just separate them completely and be done with it - but that's just me. Others prefer different methods. Whatever works. I tried gradual separation once, placing foals on one side of the property and mares on the other. The result was the mares smashing through fences to reunite with the foals and then I ended up doing what I now do anyway - total separation. So they went through it twice instead of once. Since then I opt for one-and-done. When the weanlings come back, you can put them right next to each other and there is no reaction.

@@DoubleDogDare54 Reminds me of how mothers are often advised to just bite the bullet and leave, if their kids are making a fuss when first being dropped off at daycare/preschool. Because they usually stop crying and get on just fine, as soon as mommy is out if sight. Obviously, there are exceptions, but mostly it seems to be more agonizing, to drag things out. How there is no bond at all anymore between mares and foals after weaning (just as with other animals), is almost disturbing though. I mean...I know, nature made it that way because of inbreeding and territories and all that...but it still makes it very obvious, that there is a huge difference between animals and humans.
