Yes, the new edition should be called 5.5

I definitely agree that tying new abilities to narrative moments just feels right

🥳❤️👍🏿 Stream of Consciousness: yes, 5.5 is the way to go - I love the idea of weapon masteries, but I too am worried about game speed - I like the limited uses idea and have been thinking about recharging on a short rest - I’ve been using cleave like you described and don’t want to lose that for a weapon specialization - 😢 dicks our for Harambe - never forget - they’ll need to make sure they word nick carefully so people can’t interpret the “one extra attack” to be in reference to the Extra Attack ability and not what you can do with your bonus action - I’ve just been making the additional attack from two weapon fighting be part of the main action anyway tho, so adopting this might be considered a downgrade by my players - 10ft no save push back every turn has so much abuse potential it would make me avoid cliffs and deep pits in my arena design - I’m pondering how slowing movement by 10ft interacts with zoned combat/movement from games like ICRPG that you mentioned in a previous videos - topple could open up the “whip trip” build if extended to that once great weapon - vex sort of potentiates itself enough that I worry about unending attacks with advantage - some real 2010s energy memes on the field today; I approve 👍🏿 - good luck on the give away - a real step up in price point from the dice, so I’m guessing your previous foray was a success 🎉

Have you heard of the weapon options in kobold press books? Tome of heroes has a similar system

Here is how i am implementing weapon mastery at my 5e 2014 table (if anyone wants to steal it): The Rule When a creature hits another creature with a weapon attack, the player may choose to forego the damage of the attack to instead impose a reasonable Condition or Effect on the target. The Dungeon Master is the final arbiter of what is considered reasonable. If the player chooses to impose a Condition, the target creature gets to attempt a save with a DC equal to the attack roll + all modifiers of the attack that hit them. There is no save if the player chooses to impose an effect. The player must always declare their intent to impose a Condition or Effect before they take the attack action. These Conditions and Effects last until the start of the PC's next turn. Conditions include any official 5e Condition (that makes sense). However, a DM may deem a players created effect to be a Condition if it is too powerful to be an Effect. And here is a list of possible effects (not comprehensive): Disarm Force a creature to drop one item of your choice that it is holding. The attacker has disadvantage on their attack to disarm if the target creature is holding the item with two or more hands. Distract Allow a friendly creature of your choice to use their reaction to use their full speed to freely move through the space occupied by your target without triggering an opportunity attack. Pull Force your target to move toward you up to 5 feet (you move back up to 5 feet at the same time). Push Force your target to move away from you up to 5 feet. Sap Target creature has disadvantage on its next attack roll. Slow Reduce a creature's speed by 10 feet until the start of your next turn. Sweeping Attack This effect does not require the attacker to forego damage. Instead, the attacker declares which creatures within melee range (standing next to each other) they are attacking and rolls their melee attack. The attack roll is then compared to the AC of each attacked creature individually to determine if they were hit. The damage roll is divided by the number of creatures the attacker declared as targets and each creature can only take as much damage as the result (rounded down). Any damage not assigned becasue a creature was not hit is lost. -- Cheers.

I've decided they activate on rolls of 18+. In addition, the same property doesn't always happen, the PC has a short list of options to keep things fresh and more realistic.

I like this 18+ qualifier a lot

Hmm, I like some of this but I need to think how I strip it down for Shadowdark. Makes melee more fun, but it needs to be less fiddly.

Cleave was an optional rule from 5e dmg

The idea of limiting those weapon properties to "PB times per rest" is utterly missing the point. Having to track YET ANOTHER resource and having to consider whether to spend it or not is what is gonna slow the game down. The only really "slow" option is Topple, given it requires a save. And if it is too slow, then either remove it, or perhaps compare the player's topple DC to given enemy's "passive athletics" (I recommend ties to result in the enemy NOT being toppled). Let the martials have decent at-will's, while the wizards have to consider each and every spell slot spent for their (potentially) game-breaking magic.

It's almost as if the game is hamstrung by its class mechanics and yearns to actually be a skills based system, like Runequest.
