is there a way to add this to my own player controller? im having trouble with the playercontroller variable and camera variables, my controller is setup differently as my camera is not under my player controller but a separate object

Will this weapon system work with a custom programmed FPS controller or does it have to use the one in the first video?

It can work with any FPS controller, you just have to do few changes. Please watch the tutorial carefully and understand the concept and you can use it with any controller.
