Excellent, excellent, excellent! I love these ships! Please bring us more Swedish machines of war. I love the way they think: as logical and precise as the Germans but more practical and with more heart. Keep up the good work!

I absolutely adore the Robotbåt class Norrköping. They were still in active duty when I did my conscript service in the Swedish Navy, so I often saw them and the Patrullbåt class Hugin at the naval bases and training along the Swedish coast lines. I know they were expensive to keep in service and there were less aggression in Northern Europe when they were decomissioned, but I still wish we could have kept a few of them a couple more years to support the Visby Corvettes.

I was on the piteå 1975-1976. Nice video. Operating speed fully loaded was 38 knots, and 40 knots after we had consumed some fuel. Max was around 45 knots, a bit higher during winter. Thanks.

The Spica 2 got an ESM system to detect enemy radar and warn of incomming anti ship missiles from the start. The Swedish Arte 722 (9LV200) fire control radar started what today is a world leading family of fire control systems and radars sold by SAAB The Danish Willemoes-class boats bought their advanced combat management system from Sweden. Which in Swedish service became the MARIL 880 that equipped Spica 2 after the RBS15 was fitted. The RBS 15 had a range of more than 70km and was generally stated as 100km. Modern variants double and tripple that.

Very impressive coverage of exports in particular, but you missed the CG 40 variation that was sold to Trinidad and Tobago as the CG 5 Barracuda and CG6 Cascadura. These were configured as patrol craft rather than attack craft however with armament consisting of a single Bofors 40 mm L/70 and a 20 mm gun

Thank you so much for this video, you don't know how long I've been waiting for a video on these boats. Sweden should never have retired the R-142 or the T-56, the Visby is a great ship, but the design is complex and expensive too produce.

The Plejad class (T102-T112, bult 1954-1958) was built with a steel hull. Uncommon at the time but Swedish torpedo boats has always been built in steel (excluding some prototypes). See ”Attack till sjöss” (Borgenstam & Nyman, 1985, p100). The hull shape was too narrow and had poor stability in (p 143) in hard seas and also took a lot of water over the bow.

These are really cool boats but they really could have benefited from having 1-2 diesel engines in addition to the gas turbines. The gas turbines were quite expensive and fuel thirsty to run, also very loud for slow patrol duty. I think two Scania v8 would have been an excellent complement for slow patrol use.

Well well well! The Plejadclass used not woden hulls but steal and The hulls where impirted from German without weapon and weapon systems because German was not allowed to export weapons in the fiftyes. And every Ship in the class was named after fameous Star orstarsystens like Pkejad after The Plejads. An old tradition in Sweden to name small shios with torpedoes after stars. A tradition more than 100 years old. But The tradition was boken by The Norrköping klass. Bigger shios like destroyers was named after counties and The Little smaker after swedish towns. But when The submarines became The submarines became most potent ships in the Navy after The destroyers where faced out now submarines are named after counties and next level ships like The Corvettes are named after towns. So The is still The same system in the naming of The Swedish warships. Like in the USA. So The name of The ship names gives a clue about The ships important level. So its an old system.

HMS is the designation of British ships exclusively. For Sweden it’s HSwMS, translated of course meaning His or Her Swedish Majesty‘s Ship.
@bennylofgren3208
@bennylofgren3208 Жыл бұрын
No, HMS is not uniquely British, no matter what the Brits may wish. :) In Sweden and in Swedish, the same designation is used, HMS, standing for Hans/Hennes Majestäts Skepp. When in international service, HSwMS is often used, but the ship's name including the HMS prefix does not change.

I still, at todays military threat, cannot understand the retirement of these ships, with brutally fast water turbines, space for 4-8 new RBS missiles, a potent gun etc, and just scrap them, for at best museum duty. Swedish military planners have a lot of bad decicions like these under their belt. What would it cost to develop a new small fleet of these?

Why HMS? Even if Sweden is a monarchy, traditionally just HMS privilege belongs to the UK, doesn't it? Like just RN and just RAF.

@@emileriksson76, it's using the English language here and in English publications always the abbreviatures for other monarchies were specified the nationality except for Britain. They use the prefix "HMS" as mr Eriksson explained. However, when a Swedish navy ship is active on international missions, they can use HSwMS during that service. If a Swedish navy ship is in national service, which is 99.9999% of the time, it uses HMS. So, you are both correct. What a wonderful day.
