I was very surprised when our military in the Netherlands decided on the C-390M, but I actually really like the choice. It may be a weird move to move on from the legendary C-130 which we also used for almost 30 years now and away from the support of the US as you said. But with more and more other European countries following and ordering these aircraft I believe the C-390 will have a stable basis for the future in Europe as well as in South America.

Sweden gave up on modernizing its fleet of 6 C130 Hercules in 2017. It opted in 2022 to acquire used C-130J aircraft from Italy, which, until now, has not responded whether it will sell them. It was reported this year that SAAB signed a letter of intent with EMBRAER for the KC390 to be offered to the Swedish government. The government has a project to authorize the purchase of new aircraft in the 2024 defense budget. On the other hand, Austria decided to acquire 4 KC390 aircraft yesterday.

Most likely now that Sweden entered NATO they will end up buying the C-130 or A300M in order to be effective in joint operations. The LOI with Embraer is to force Italy into a decision.

@@leonardonogueira2647 - Brazil's defense minister was on a flight to Sweden to talk about another 14 Gripens NG and taking the proposal for the Nordic country to buy 4 to 5 KC390s when Hamas invaded Israel. The Brazilian and his entourage decided to return as they would have to coordinate the withdrawal of the Brazilians from Israel. But the talks will continue.

Amazing timing @Weapon Detective, Austria just announced it will buy the C-390! India is strongly considering the aircraft to replace its aging Il-76, in what could be the largest contract for the plane so far, despite India having some C-130J . Rumors say Egypt is considering the C-390.

@@VTUGYT it's not a one to one ratio, as far as it's known India wants to fly C-17 as strategic airlifters and C-390 as tactical ones so the C390 would replace both the medium and small transport aircraft due to its improve capability to land on smaller airfields. That's why India is looking for 60 to 80 C-390 with some level of local production.

좋은 항공기네요, 한국에서 사도 좋은 옵션인데.. 문제는 한국은 비슷한 체급의 중형수송기 개발사업이 진행중입니다, 물론 다른 여러 나라들도 중형수송기를 자체 개발하려고 하고 있고 이미 갖고 있는 나라들도 있습니다. 인도네시아도 수송기를 생산하고 있죠 스페인과 공동개발한 것으로 의외일지 모르지만 이 시장에서 650대의 수요가 있다면 자체제작하려는 나라들 수량을 뺀다면 200~300대 판매하면 굉장히 선전한 걸 겁니다, 가격과 성능은 매력적이지만 정치적 결정에 의해서 이 수량은 줄어들면 줄어들었지 늘어나진 않을 거 같네요.

It's not that it's similar, it's the KC-390 30 Ton version itself When South Korea began its industrialization of aeronautics, South Korea needed to model itself on several models that already existed on the market, but instead of buying Via technology transfer or doing what China does in copying everything, South Korea had a brilliant idea which was to hire designers from the military aviation companies on the market And that's where the Embraer designers come in, whom South Korea hired individually so as not to suffer geopolitical problems, and then the KT-1 appeared, which was the T-27 Tucano, and then the KT-2, which is the AT-27.Toucan From the 21st century and that's where that model of the KC-390 comes in because those designers were in the KC-390 program

@@MarkPoke. 그렇죠, 당장 써야되는데 부족한 수송기들이 있으니 협상은 하고 있지만 비슷한 체급의 수송기 개발을 진행하고 있는 것도 맞습니다. 그리고 많은 나라들이 자체 수송기 사업을 단독이든 공동개발이든 진행해서 취득했거나 진행할 의향들이 있죠, 초음속 제트전투기보다는 난이도 낮아서 항공인프라 확대에 적합하니까요. 국제적으로 주목받는 제트전투기를 개발하는 나라보다 관심 못 받는 수송기를 개발하는 나라가 더 많은 거로 압니다, 민항기로 활용할 수도 있다고 생각들을 하니까. 물론 이건 엠브라에르사의 역량을 폄하하려는 의도는 절대 없습니다, 오히려 저는 각기 잡다하게 생산하느니 엠브라에르가 시장에서 도전적으로 많은 점유를 해서 오래도록 서비스해주는 게 낫다고 생각합니다.

@ ya well Even if the C-130 Hercules is compared to the Airbus A400M which is even larger, and uses the same tuboprop type engine, the C-130 engine is still noisier

As a Brazillian I must clarify some things. Engesa, the deceased sister of Embraer, didn't go broke for trying something too ambitious as you said. It bankrupted because of very poor govermental administration of the company, you see both Ebraer and Engesa were state-owned companies and even Embraer would bankrupt if not given to the private initiative in time. Engesa made several contracts with the Arabs... well known for being terrible payers. this was the major factor for its demise, not the Osoro project. As several hundreds of EE-9 Cascavel were "sold" to arabs, but the money never came to us, so it couldn't handle the deficit, and he government found it to be a failure... their failure, not the engineers or the products, nor the company itself.

Engesa was not a state-owned compay. It put a lot of money on the development of Osorio MBT and went bankrupt not because the arabs didn't pay, but because the contract flopped. Whether it failed under sabotage or not is open to discussion... Engesa never delivered or even built a single Osorio to the arabs.

Yes, I agree! Engesa was a private company, shure, but the army, the state could, should, MUST buy some tanks and saved the company, as US does with Lockheed Martin and others for example.

Completely different applications. The Hercules, being a turboprop, can handle more damage before becoming inoperable. It can also reach higher velocities in less time AND is less prone to malfunctions in sandy environments. Those are highly valued characteristics in a battlefield. The KC390 is more economical, and fits logistical applications better away from hot areas. Btw, I'm Brazilian.

I live in Brasília, the brazilian main capital. My home is right under the airport's approach slope. I always recognize the sound of KC390 and sometimes i'm able to spot it. It's a beautiful aircraft.

The 4 turboprops of the C-130 have some advantages regarding resilience. Many C-130s are used for special operations. C-130s landed with 1 engine left and started with 3 working engines. It’s a highly overpowered aircraft - for a reason.

Just a little correction, the Engesa's MBT (Osorio) was not the reason of bankrupt. Actually the MBT program was the last hope to save the company from being broke. The MBT Osorio was a really good tank and could compete (and win) M1 Abrams in Saudi Arabia tests (1987).

There's a reason the C-130 uses turboprops: Efficiency. They are much less expensive to operate than an equivalent jet powered aircraft. They are more complex and heavier, but these issues pail in comparison to operating expense.

The Dutch procurement of 9 C-390's will included air frames for the Austrian Air Force as well (5 will be for the RNLAF, 4 will be for the AAF). The Dutch air frames will be based at Eindhoven Air Base and placed under EATC command (next to the A330 MRTT's). The UK might be interested in the C-390 as well from what I've learned. They will likely be waiting to see what the RNLAF experiences with this type is before making their minds up if they want to pursue their interest.

Hello friend, I'm Brazilian and I follow what's happening in Brazil from the inside, Engesa was a victim of the corrupt government, we are the fifth largest country in the world and the tenth largest economy, we don't have large technology producers in many areas, Brazilian businesspeople are warriors and survive a large bureaucracy, taxes and bribes. Even so, we are big and biggest in the world in many areas, I really feel the loss of a Brazilian car brand in the 90s, our government was the one who ended it, the owner was a competent and hard-working businessman

If I remember well Boeing was in the process of acquiring Embraer until financial problems caused by the 787MAX and covid prevented that acquisition. That tells you something about the C390 quality and ability to replace the C130.

It cannot replace the C130j because the largest customer for C130j is the USA itself and this country will never buy Brazil aircrafts to fulfil its tactical airlift capability requirement.

Yesterday us Dutch ordered 5 more for Austria(next to 5 of our own) .Weird buying construction it's because there was fraud(in Austria) in the past..Fokker (pronounce as "f*cker" haha, our former airplane builder) is also involved that's why Dutch interest is in this "project"..

the c130 differs from the c390 even though they have a similar payload. C130 is designed to fly into combat areas and drop off tanks or armed vehicles at low altitudes, it also has a lower take-off and landing distance, plus it's more maneuverable for dives. the c390 is like a smaller c17, it does the transporting part perfectly but the ground support, it can't do.
