Welcome to our channel. All the weapon systems are like books. They tell us their stories. The Weapon Detective investigates these books, reads between the lines, analyse, and tells the untold. At the dawn of the Second Cold War, the fruits of new projects give us clues about the future. But current weapon systems also have their own stories. In our videos, you can find technical information as well as historical backgrounds, what happened during the development processes, combat experience and political projection. While the Second Cold War rising, Let's investigate the weapons together.

Much of my family in Yeoville, Somerset, worked for Westland in the 70's - 80'. The Lynx was a superstar in those days. She had it all, looks, speed, and maneuverability! The airshow demo was outstanding by exceeding what anyone at the time would expect from a conventional helicopter!

I don't believe the Lynx is a great looking helicopter. During the 1980s, the bell 412, the the Sikorski S76, and the Blackhawk, and A109 I believe were smoother, and sleeker looking copter's. But the lynx had the speed and the rigidity, And had flight characteristics that kicked major tail.

I always felt like the Lynx and Wildcat are to shipboard helos what the Gripen is to fighters: 50% the cost to buy and fly but still delivering 80% the capability of the larger alternatives. Sadly I do not think the Wildcat will have the same success as the Lynx. That's not due to any shortcoming of the aircraft itself. The Lynx came to the market when warships were smaller and often had helicopter facilities added almost as an after thought. Nowadays virtually every warship 2500 tonnes or larger has facilities for a medium weight helo like the MH-60 or NH-90 at the core of the design. Wildcat may be the best light maritime combat helicopter in the world, but there just isn't as much of a market for that class of aircraft anymore.
@KRS-ro6oi
@KRS-ro6oi 10 ай бұрын
The NH-90 is a failed project. Just ask the australians and the norwegian. The only contries who operates them in numbers are the same whos industry is involved in the building. The MH-60 is 40-ish years old, and lack som bacis safty features. Wildcat has a good chanse...
@mortified776
@mortified776 10 ай бұрын
@@KRS-ro6oi I am very aware of the NH90s woes both here in Australia and in Scandinavia. I was thinking less about the merits of NH90 vs MH-60 vs Wildcat than the market for a small maritime combat helicopter now vs when the Lynx was designed. I think the Wildcat is an excellent aircraft and I hope it gets a lot more sales. The issue is more that the use case for that specific kind of aircraft is less obvious than it was in the 1970s. The category of ships the Lynx was often bought to operate from are now generally large enough operate the same medium helicopters as larger frigates and destroyers. Many of the Lynx and Wildcat's missions can now be done by VTOL UAVs that can fly from ships too small even for the Lynx/Wildcat. Nonetheless, it seems there is hope! There are new Wildcats currently in production. The customer is unnamed but said to be a North African country. The two obvious candidates would be Algeria or Egypt.

@@mortified776 The thing is that reallt helps the wildcat is you can fit two of them over say a seahawk or a merlin this because especially important if say you are a ASW Frigate and can have 2 helos up over just one.

A smart move by the UK. You just can't keep getting bigger and bigger which is what always seems to happen. This is smaller than the Blackhawk/Seahawk, but retains a large cabin.

*This is great.* Thanks so much for all the information, research you have to do, and producing these really good videos! ☀️😎☀️🇺🇸 *perhaps, one day you could do a small segment about the rigid rotor concept, like the Cheyenne had.* I think it had some real advantages, and i know defense contractors are always looking for ways to stymie the progress of other competitors...yet sometimes a real good idea, or tech is just swept aside for a more poor design.

The Lynx and Sea Lynx are fascinating, sleek and elegant helicopters. The Wildcat not only has a generic name - half of all US school sports teams are named the same - but all the devices attached to its nose look like blisters and make it look weird and ugly.

This is a chopper I don't get: the Linx was good in the seventies, but this Wildcat is just a new thing disguised as an old one, like a new Mini or a new Fiat 500. There are better, more practical helicopter around, even inside Agusta Westland, and they would have come cheaper Modern frigates allow to carry at least 2 helicopters, often an EH101 and an NH90 class together and you won't be able to stick 3 wildcats there anyway, so you are just shooting yourself in a foot. The AW139/149/169/189 family can provide the same capabilities of the Wildcat with a more practical fuselage and at a lot cheaper if you don't want to go all the way to the NH90, with the advantage of commonalities in spare parts on a wide range of body sizes.

None of the family AW civil helicopters have the deck handling capability over the 159. Basically cheapest isn't best when designing naval helicopters. The biggest enemy is the sea itself when considering the longevity of seaborne aircraft. Seeing how some nations look after their naval aircraft the Military upgrading of civil machines to operate in a salt water environments proves false economy. As for NH90, it is predicted long term to be a fly by wire nightmare riddled with micro corrosion induced malfunctioning.

Is it just me, or is that helicopter very...... ummmm......... jittery in the hover??? I noticed that in spite of the pilot's best intentions, that it just can't quite be still in the hover. It keeps moving around like it had just done a bunch of caffeine pills.

They are incredibly stable over landing without any high winds but landing onboard a ship is alot different, the wind down side of the ship will be blasting the aircraft as it comes in from the port side, once it gets over the harpoon grid on the deck it then will be being buffeted by winds from across deck, the pilot has to combat all of this and land on a moving platform at sea, it's a tricky operation even if it looks relatively calm in the clip.
