You may have managed to convert the comments of a troll into a useful video, but it really sounds to my inner Conspiracy Theorist that whomever submitted the question might work for the PR dept of a Chinese tablet mgfr, intent on trying to discredit the Intuos line. IMHO, there is no way anyone could destroy a Wacom nib in two days unless they were trying to, let alone the eraser ( a rounded piece of hard plastic). Incidentally, as a side note, really enjoy your Painter videos. Good informative stuff. Thanks for that.

+shaz bot Well, the Intuos Pro is my first tablet, so as someone not too used to that medium, my first nib wore down in a week, now I'm being more delicate but I have this slight scratch on the tablet which I hate myself for, but it's still usable. But really for someone new to digital art (or worse, if someone starts out drawing this way) it can be legitimately hard to get used to pressing less
@shazbot71208 жыл бұрын
+DevilBlackDeath What I was doing for a while was using it with a piece of Bristol paper taped to it. It still reads just as well, feels a little more natural, and protects the surface, too. Worth a try. I tend toward the lighter and sketchier end of things, and even I was blowing through nibs at first, maybe not within a week, but alarmingly fast. The paper trick seemed to help with that. You just have to keep in mind it's a different medium--you're not going to approach tiny delicate paintbrushes on a five-inch canvas the same way you would a piece of vine charcoal on a huge newsprint pad. You just have to adapt your approach to what you're using. It's just practice like anything else. Once you get used to it, there's no limit to what you can do with it.
@devilblackdeath8 жыл бұрын
Yeah it already shows, I started using another nib (the first one got really pointy and I'm afraid of scratching the tablet with it, I'm probably better off throwing it away) and no sign of wear at all yet. The mistake I did as a beginner was pressing harder instaed of increasing my brush size. Also I think using a firm preset for wacom tablets is preferrable, it gives more control over lines thickness (well at least if you're doing sketchy things, not sure it's really all that important for painting, at least not as much). So yes, if any newcomer look at this vid or reads this, just tend to avoid the highest levels of pressure of your tablets, you already have plenty precision without pressing too hard

You and 53 other people (upvotes) haven't tried the new 2017 edition Wacom Intuos Pro. You will wear down potentially 2-3 nibs in one day if you plan on drawing all day.

Aaron, for a pro like you, you don't sketch as much as a beginner does because you know all the shortcuts and functions of your software. I'm a total beginner, relying completely on the nib to achieve everything in my drawing. I wore down like half of two nibs in like 3 days, drawing maybe 3-4 hours a day. Mind you, I put a smooth texture sheet before I even started using my Intuos Pro medium tablet. I don't worry about the surface of the tablet, it's covered with a texture sheet that is designed to be replaced.

I think the brand new surface of the intuos or any non-display tablets are going to wear down the nibs fast for the first few days of use. I went and got some of the spring nibs and put a plastic cover on mine. It doesn't feel like paper and has very little resistance, but if it makes my equipment last longer then I'm happy with it
@Barsookmik3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Can you tell me, does the plastic cover reduce pressure sensitivity? And what type of plastic cover do you use?
@dpstevenson6 жыл бұрын
You are using your pen on a different tablet than the viewer. The Wacom Intuos Pro comes standard with a much rougher surface than their tablets have in the past. Within a few hours of use I knew I would need to purchase a smoother texture sheet. The only reason I was aware this was even an option was because the tablet also came with some texture sheet samples that you could purchase. It's almost as if they knew that users would prefer the smooth traditional surface and would end up buying it. And if you stick with the rough surface you end up blowing through your nibs and will need to purchase more of those.

I use an Intuos Art. On one hand, I would say i don't press very hard, but the tablet scratches anyway. My first nib lasted pretty long, I think (it might be because I didn't know you had to change the nibs until the last three months :P. I still noticed it wore down pretty quickly) On the other hand, I noticed that if my pressure sensitivity was so sensible, I could not reach minimum pressure easily. Even if I would say I don't press hard, I need to use a firmer pressure sensitivity to work properly. Except in Krita. You know what I think that's the real issue? The pressure curve. In Krita you can use emulation to adapt the pressure curve to your needs. Want the curve to be straight? A wave? Exponential? A zig-zag? You can edit it! And the same happens with other brush parameters like speed, tilt... You can adjust a general sensitivity curve in the settings. Procreate uses horizontal bars with values to define brush parameters, but you can adjust the pen sensitivity in the Settings, too. That will help you, so you don't need to press that hard to get max opacity or too light to get min opacity. In Photoshop, GIMP, Sketchbook, Sketchable, Corel, etc., you use horizontal bars (with number values) to define brush parameters AND the pen sensitivity, instead of emulation curves. Sometimes this is uncomfortable, it feels weird, for example, when inking with a pen. It feels unnatural because you cannot easily graduate pressure. And I'm not talking about practice or eye-hand coordination (which you'll need to ink properly). I'm talking about the pen and the brus settings. When you go to change sensitivity in the Wacom settings (defined with preset pressure levels instead of precise values, which is even WORSE) or in the app settings, you can't get what you are looking for.

Actually, unless I'm missing something, My Wacom Intuos stores 3 extra nibs inside the pen. Wish there were more in the tablet to put me at ease, but I shouldn't need them so soon. My issue I believe is that I colored in too quickly/roughly. I'm very light when I draw lines, but I guess I probably got carried away at some point. Now, nothing really more than a warning on my end I guess, though I hate the texture when I use it in a certain position, which almost feels like it's scratching.

Seems a little disingenuous when asked about nib wear on an Intuos Pro, with a surface like course sandpaper, by responding using a glass surface Cintiq. I have the Pro and use a light touch for photo editing. The first nib lasted 3 days and is THE most complained feature of the Pro. Another $30 for the smooth overlay improved but did not correct the issue.
@aaronrutten6 жыл бұрын
It gets old having to explain this, but grain or tooth is actually a requested feature. A lot of artists prefer drawing on a surface with some resistance because it feels more natural. Drawing on a slippery surface is no fun, in my opinion. But if you prefer it, that's why Wacom gives you nib, surface AND tablet options. There are models that are smoother and everyone has the right to choose what works best for them. Yes, there are a lot of complaints, but that's mostly from people who don't understand what they are buying. My Cintiq has tooth too, but not as much as the Intuos Pro. They actually added more to the new Cintiq Pros because that's what people want. The point I make in the video is still valid. You can prevent nib wear and nibs wear down for a reason.
@drawntofashionillustration95964 жыл бұрын
The issue is the supply of rubbish tips and the fact that the surface wears down (!) after a while. I would have thought a solid surface would have years of stability, and would be part of the design, like those nice smooth kitchen cooktops. And you would think the engineers would come up with a non-destructible nib for heaven's sake! If I spend a packet on a digital tablet, I know the stylus, will be a facsimile of a pencil. They can make a non-destructive nib, you bet they can. To upload work-arounds like "don't press so hard" is just supporting bad design. Some people like to draw with passion, not sketch lightly....it just ain't their style. Stop justifying Wacom's design faults. But hey, If you guys want to pay $1 for something that is made for 2 cents, be my guest. That is why I am hearing about artists desperately shoving spaghetti and felt nibs up the barrels to save money. What a joke. I am sure if people stopped buying them, they would fix the problem quick-smart.

I'm not pressing hard at all, but these scratches keep building up. This makes me wonder, why Wacom removed protective plastic sheet from the newer models? So that we wear them down faster and buy replacement?..
@aaronrutten7 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, those plastic sheets made it feel slippery. Friction feels more natural to most people when drawing which is why a lot of artists prefer it. I'm guessing they removed the sheets because that's what customers wanted. Some people put a piece of paper over their tablet to prevent nib wear, but honestly the nibs should last you quite a while unless you are using them incorrectly. See this video for more info about preventing nib wear: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGK7knt4pMmarq8 In regards to scratches, those might just be residue from the nib on your tablet. I know this is probably irrelevant,but. Do finger print smudges affect the tablet performance that much? I've used my for a about a day,and there are at least a couple smudges on the surface that are quite noticable. And is it okay to wipe them down with a damp cloth? Or is there like a specific cloth for it? Or will that even work? I've never used a graphic tablet before,so idk how like tablet maintenance works at all,and I'm paranoid I might not be taking care of it enough,or might mess something up trying to clean it.

Would a light use of furniture polish (mr sheen)help to lubricate surface? I know it does with plastic curtain rails.

I have a Wacom 13HD cintiq. On screen display tablet. And I have about 10 extra nibs too. And even the brand new nibs scratch my tablet screen. But very thinly and ghostly.

what kind of nib wears down in 2 days? i've been using my intous tab for 5 years now and im still only on my second nib
@Strongbear20135 жыл бұрын
I have a semi-related but different problem to this. My nibs do wear down through use but last a long time, but it's the tablet surface that is also beginning to wear down after several years of use. It has scratches, and now they're beginning to interfere with the flow of my lines. This means that if I try to draw a straight or curved line (eg if I'm drawing strands of hair), it's as if my pen isn't making contact with part of the surface. Even if I try to move my pen to a different part of the tablet, that doesn't seem to work, because where I need to draw seems to be located in the centre of the tablet, which is where most of the scratch marks are and where it has worn down in places. Is there a way to overcome this? Or can just the drawing surface be replaced without having to replace the whole tablet? I don't really want to have to buy another tablet outright because it still works, just that it is more temperamental than when I first bought it years ago when it worked fine.

Hi Aaron I have a brand new cintiq 13hd touch and I'm afraid to scratch it. I've seen in some websites and blogs and even videos in youtube from people with cintiqs that scratched and the price to replace the plastic thing that covers the screen glass is $200 plus shipping, witch as I'm from Portugal will not be cheap. What screen protector do you recomend for me to use with this new tablet? I also have a cintiq 24hd and its covered with an acetate sheet since day one and as I don't have a desk to have it on yet, its still on the box (thats why I bought a more portable one in the first place... cause my lack of space at this moment). For that large cintiq what can I use to protect the screen when I'm drawing? Thank you in advance.
@aaronrutten8 жыл бұрын
+Rui Torre I don't think it really needs a screen protector if you are careful with it. My Cintiq 24 only has 1 scratch deep enough to notice and I think it happened while I was moving it in the car. The scratch is not noticeable while the screen is on and it doesn't affect me while I'm drawing. I wouldn't worry about it. The screens are tough. My Cintiq Companion doesn't have any scratches and I've traveled with it a lot. It's worth mentioning that there are a lot of blogs/complaints out there from people who don't know how to properly use a tablet. Those folks are probably not replacing their nibs or pressing down much harder than they need to which is causing scratches. Otherwise, I don't see how it could get scratched under normal use.

Hello! I was wondering where I could buy a replacement sheet for my tablet which is an Intuos5 Touch, size Small. I've looked through Wacom's store, amazon, and the like but couldn't find anything for this model. I've seen a few for the Intuos4, but I'm not sure if that is compatible with my tablet's model (PTH-450) and didn't see anything that said it was. If someone could send me an answer to this question, that would be great!

Helloo! I am having problems with my gaomon m106k graphics tablet. I have had it for almost a month and used it 4-5 times. I took it out a few minutes ago and noticed i just made a small scratch. it happened again 2 minutes later and i'm worried about my tablet getting damaged. I checked the pen but it's nib is literally brand new and the tip is rounded. Do you guys have any reccomendations on what i should do?

Does all the Intuos Tablets ( Screen-less) have the durable grey plastic thingy? The one that is like with the matrix of dots. Thanks in advance, (P.S I'm only a 13 year old, so I wont be expecting to like buy a new one if it wore out.)

The store where I bought my tablet offers nibs but it says in the description that it's only compatable with Bamboo models. However, I saw 490 in one of the compatible models tab and I'm now confused if there is a Bamboo 490 or is it the Intuos 490. Will it work with my Intuos Comic?

Hi. Can I ask how to protect the side rubber of wacom tablet??
@mathyougriffthis10854 жыл бұрын
Yeah, don't bang the side of it up against anything and you should be all set. If you must bang up the sides though, try adding more rubber or foam preemptively. Bang-a-rang!

Hello. Thank you for this video. My wacom pro was getting a little scratched too. Of course, it has 2 years of intense daily use, but still, I want it to last as long as it can. It's not something that really damages it, but in some zones I noticed that because of the scratches, I don't know how to explain, but is like, when the pen goes there the texture is different and I feel it and makes me confusion. I already adjust the pen pressure so is even softer than in the example that appears in this video. I will have to get used to that. I was getting really worried and this video was really something that calm me down. I actually thought that I should change the tips more often, cause one tip serves me for a year, more or less. But now, after what you said, I just feel more relaxed about this.

+Starlia Kaichu If it's a wacom pen, it doesn't use batteries. Let it dry completely and then give it a try and let me know if it works. If it does not, you'll need to buy a replacement online.

@ghostyens6 жыл бұрын
Pinhook Meiosis - They might not even be scratches, so don't worry. After using my Intuos for a couple of days I thought I had scratched it a lot but it turns out that they were just marks that can be wiped off! Unless you've been pressing really hard, they're probably just marks. Take a soft cloth and wipe your surface and they should be gone!

all intuos tablets use the same nibs?
@nguyenanhtuan1586 жыл бұрын
Do you have protected screen Wacom?
@aaronrutten6 жыл бұрын
Nope. Wacom tablets don't need screen protectors. The only scratch I've ever had was on my Cintiq 24HD and that happened when I was moving it in a car and something rubbed against the screen. I thin sheet of plastic wouldn't have made a difference in that case. Normal use of a tablet shouldn't cause scratches. A lot of people falsely report scratches all over their tablet, but that's actually just marks from the pen that can easily be wiped away.
@yeyoibirb68288 жыл бұрын
what about old tablets that has scratches from over use is there anyway tu fix that? .-.
@mathyougriffthis10854 жыл бұрын
Use a thin piece of plastic, like a binder divider over your drawing surface. You can tape it down so it doesn't slid around. Works just fine and of course, is easily replaceable if that too becomes too scratched up.

After 1 year, my pen is way too worn down. I tried to use the hole in the intuos, but it still won't work. I even used tweezers yet still can't get my nib out. Any way you can help?
@kyokusei8 жыл бұрын
Bend the nib against the ring until it grips it, then pull out. try not to use anything else or you might break the nib and then it'll really be stuck.
@buunuu.7 жыл бұрын
for anyone else who gets this problem, you can try using something really sticky like blue tack to pull it out
