I was there and it was mindblowing man ... the band nearly burned the theatre down ... totally awe inspiring ... this my is stand out gig of all time ... not too much missing shorter and zawinul duet , birdland, badia/boogie woogie waltz ... got the whole gig on cassette somewhere ,,, sound quality on here is pucker though ... real treasure of the highest order ...

I saw them with practically every line-up and I prefer their earlier music & bands by far. It could be that I was a 14/15 year going to those concerts with my older brothers. The band with Chester Thompson on drums / Alejandro Acuna on percussion at the Beacon theater was incredible! ..my favorite concert of Weather Report. RIP to my all time favorite musician in any genre, the great Wayne Shorter! I met him back stage once at their concert, the sweetest most gentle person, one of the greats of all time.

I saw the gig prior to this one ( i think) in Amsterdam and to this day ( i’m a 60 year old pro drummer ) it’s the best concert i ever saw& heard . Instrumental music at it’s finest.

It's odd how I remember this gig I sat at the front of the balcony! I always thought it started with Black Market but perhaps I'm getting it mixed up with 8:30 album. I remember the two drummers at the beginning in the lotus position and when it started they didn't seem to stop until the end of the show. I remember the lasers during Dream Clock and back drop projections of some of the music. I definitely remember Purple Haze bass solo! I wasn't really into this kind of music at the time but after this gig the world opened up to me! A few weeks later I saw Jethro Tull at the Albert Hall. A friend of mine was working in security at this gig and when I went back of the Odeon to say hi and see if he was off work I managed to tap hands briefly with Jaco as he passed! It didn't really mean that much to me at the time but history changes everything. That is true account but I'm sure everyone has a Jaco story somewhere!

Thank you for this posting. I was at this gig in 1980, (nearly 40 years ago) with a friend. One of the most amazing gigs of my entire life. I also saw and met the band backstage at the Manchester Apollo on the same tour - something that will stay with me until my dying day. Many thanks.🙏

Just a query I only thought they only played the Hammersmith Odeon in 1980 as this was their final one of the year? Previous years they also played at Newcastle City Hall. Only enquiring really!

Hi Al, I haven’t got the tickets to hand, but they definitely played the Manchester Apollo on their 1980 UK tour - I have the autographs of the band they dated as 1980 - and of course it’s not something I’ll ever forget. I’m not sure if they played any other venues other than London and Manchester though. I hope that helps.🙏

@@eyelidman09 Hi I've looked at the Manchester Opollo gigs for that year and only 5 with no Weather Report appearance. I've checked their gig history and according to them they played only Hammersmith. Was it with Jaco? If it was it seems he only played Hammersmith too! Perhaps you went to the London gig? Al

What more can you say about the marvelous Weather Report? They are far from rock and/or jazz, they are the epitome of 'modern music' (in lack of a better name), but, beyond theorizations and names, Weather Repor is FREEDOM, pure and genuine. Thanks for the upload and the notes. Best regards from Medellín, Colombia.

Well said. I could not have said it any better myself. My favorite band of all time. I saw them many times between 1973 and 1980. I unfortunately missed the last incarnation with victor Bailey and Omar Hakim. I have heard many shows since that time by that particular lineup, and they were amazing also. It doesn't get any better than this.

Ah, the lasers. I was in the tenth row center. I bawled my eyes out then, and I bawled my eyes out again just now. I remember the drive down from Cambridge. Five in the car. Inconceivable that we would actually be in the same space as Jaco and Joe. Unthinkable. I met them both at the stage door afterwards, after a long wait. I feel blessed to have been there, and had that experience. A different era, when a few green lasers and a digital delay seemed like from another world. But at the time it was. No finer band, ever. Other, incredible bands of course, but sometimes an individual configuration and vision resonates louder and stronger than any other. We drove home in total silence. Thank you to Mark the Mimic for this upload and the editing. RIP Jaco, RIP Joe. I've always found this short clip to be very helpful in dark times: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5Srn4CKd62jhM0 Maybe it will help someone else somewhere.

I saw the same lineup a year later at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia Maryland. In my opinion, Jaco Pastorius's, Three Views of a Secret, ranks up there with Gershwin, Ellington or Strayhorn as far as Jazz compositions.

To all WR/Zawinul fans out there, I add my own little thought. I have great difficulty in listening to much of WR's live output in this phase because I find that Peter Erskine's 'drumming' is just so scatter-gun or hectic that it ruins then overall effect of the music. Peter is obviously a great drummer - I just always felt that he wasn't the right fit for WR. He's a big band guy, and in the small confines of WR I just never felt that he had the right position in the group. His drumming never really fit into the music comfortably - it was as if in the absence of knowing what to do, he would just keep firing away. I mean - his performance during Fast City is a classic example. Discuss...
@stevenperren63643 жыл бұрын
He was not WRs best drummer but he fit well with Jaco and this incarnation of the band Imho was the best because of adding back a percussionist, plus they had new material which was much more flexible than the 8:30 stuff. With that quartet they had gotten stale, this was much more jazzy and played to the strengths of all the band members, including Erskine. But I was at this gig and he looked exhausted after just the opener !
