Met Victor at Berklee 1979. He literally was the best bassist by far on campus. He was confident and backed it up. Very educated and skilled. He and Steve Vai were in a band together. I had the privilege of spending time with Victor when he would tour through Ohio with various bands. A nice person, excellent musician - RIP - Victor B.

..hey man!..i was there too in ‘78 and ‘79..i had the blessing of jamming with Victor Bailey RIP a bunch and playing with him in a group for a few gigs at Pooh’s Pub, we were both from Philly and we were both named Victor!..he was roommates with Mark Ledford RIP, another future great musician..of the electric bassists up there at the time I think my Berklee brother Baron Browne RIP was pretty close, he was the other bassist in our Poohs Pub ensemble if Victor wasn’t available..stay safe and stay strong..Happy Holidays..New York..Nov 23, 2022..

@@victormusic01x Wow, much respect. Pooh's was the spot. I caught the monster drummer Tommy Cambell there twice. He had just received this huge 30 piece Cherry set. He was amazing. Played "Fred" by Tony Williams. Ron Savage and I were together. Blew us both away. Peace

+Alexandre Soares  I think it is incorrect to say that Omar Hakim was the best drummer that Weather Report ever had. This band is a totally different inception of Weather Report. The previous inception which had Jaco Pastorius and Peter Erskine playing drums was a totally different experience. Amazing to hear both...one should not say one is better than another. Go back and listen to Ngudu, listen to Chester Thompson amongst other great musicians that have played with WP. There are many rhythm sections that are equally amazing.

Can't agree more with those who admire JZ and everything Weather Report did to the music culture! I remember when I was 14 years old and just started to play drums and immediately loved Weather Report. They came to Stockholm and I watched them... I didn't know that Pete Erskine and Jaco P and Manolo Badrena wasn't there. I had never been so impressed when Omar Hakim fired it all up from the opening with "procession" Thank You all

I heard them all and 30 years later all I can say is that Zawinul impresses me most. I love Hancock, Corea, Methany and many others but Joe's contribution to the art ( we call music) is overshadowing everyone else. They don't even make solos, and why should they? All of them together are telling us the story. His music sounds like from another world or place in space. Just think about it. Listen to track #3 from ( NYC ) 1982 album"Weather report". Cosmos - is all I can say.Joe is so much more different then the rest. Respect to all of you who share my understanding of Zawinul's music.

I saw every incarnation of WP and it was killing me to see and hear what the band was going to be like without Jaco. pietrobarca Well put :) Joe had been the 'engine' from the beginning, and Wayne, the band's co-founder, became more and more withdrawn because of the direction WR took after Zawinul took Jaco... He brought nothing to the band. Zip.
@paxwallacejazz6 жыл бұрын
PrZemek44 Perhaps but Wayne Shorter's mid 60s ballads stand as a towering testament to Shorters Genius. I know for all the jazz Musicians I've known including myself, Shorters work with the "Quintet" as well as his own 60s LPs in the end are way more influential than the entire body of fusion from the 70s and 80s. Just go listen to Infant Eyes the original version thats all the proof you'll need.
@RashidLanie83 жыл бұрын
What nonesense!!...Do u really think Shorter would continue to be in the band if he brought nothing into it after Jaco. I wonder who wrote Palladium and so many other great compositions. Moreover, Shorter’s sax playing helped create the iconic WR sound. Listen to A Remark You Made(Zawinul) and so many others!!!...Shorter’s playing on that is an imperative ingredient and without him it just wouldn’t be as memorable, IMHO. I guess you don’t know their music that well for you to make such an asinine statement!!

Just listen to A Remark You Made from Heavy Weather. The synthesizer work is almost indescribable. I'ts amazing how many great musicians came out of Miles' academy of fusion in the late '60s to early '70s particularly the landmark albums In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew. Zawinul, Shorter, Corea, Mclaughlin, Hancock , Williams and the list goes on....

+mootbooxle At 40:20 you can see the keyboard below the Quadra and it looks like a Prophet 5 to me. I may be wrong. Not sure what's below that. The rest you mention are spot on.

+mootbooxle A wild stab in the dark for the other two mystery keyboards. Possibly the keyboard from an Arp 2600 under the prophet 5, and I may have gotten a slight glimpse of blue from the keyboard below the Xpander which looked a little Emulator 1 like. Not convinced, but a possibility.

I believe this was their 1st record after Jaco Pastorius was no longer with the band. Despite his huge presence, and absence Procession, Domino Theory, and Sporting Life was some of the best material they put out there. Victor Bailey added his own dimension to the sound, a new just as great a version, in other words he killed it. Jaco & Victor are sorely missed, along with Zawinul. Al Bo When Pastorius played well, he could be amazing, but he did not always do that... Same with Zawinul, which seemed sloppy far to often (despite being very good at times, and being a great and creative composer). Shorter was more consistently top notch and always played tasteful high quality solos, riffs, harmonics and fills, despite Joe or Jaco's often quite uneven performances.
@jazz654 жыл бұрын
Zawinul needed a different bass player. i think there was too much competition between Joe and Jaco, and in my opinion Victor Bailey replaced Jaco with no regrets. I love both the same, one is a genius of the instrument, the other one, Victor is a Giant. i miss them so much
