Weathering a Steam Locomotive - BR Standard Class 5MT - Yorkshire Dales Model Railway

The Standard Class 5 gets a coat of grime in this weeks video. I used a few photo references, as many of the Standard 5s seemed to be in (relatively) good condition in the late 50s compared to some other classes. The loco is a Bachmann model and run ridiculously well considering it has no tender pick ups. This will be the first of a number of loco weathering videos, the next probably being a Standard Class 9F.
The airbrush was a complete kit from EverythingAirbrush for £75. The compressor is a model As18-2 mini piston type compressor. The airbrush it’s self is fuel action.
The paints used are the Railmatch Rail Weathering set available for around £16.
I use two coats:
First I give the locomotive an overall spray of weathered black and roof dirt.
Then give the lower areas of a coat of sleeper grime and frame dirt. I also use this colour on the pipes, safety vales and tender.
I also had a go at using a tensocrom glaze to add some staining to the rear of the tender.
I then clean the wheels using a battery, IPA alcohol and a cotton bud.
Finally I add real coal ‘borrowed’ from the staithes at the KWVR in Yorkshire, and also add a Bachmann crew.

Simple but effective weathering Mr Raspberry. I differ in one respect from you in as much as I use oily steel for the motion gear. Videos like these are excellent for modellers as they are basic and simple to follow. Cheers, Bob

Another great video! I see that David Hyde, who does the DERESLEY videos, has a form of rolling road so the wheels and motion on the locos he weathers get a regular pattern, and ensures that the motion doesn't get clogged up. Interesting point you may have considered already.

Good job. How about a bit of coal spillage by water filler on tender and some more ( old) coal behind divider? Also not all the glass would be opaque, the crews would clean what makes their life better. Fireman would clean the drivers window to keep him sweet!

yeah, could be paint consistency or it might be the not terribly great quality of my airbrush! Yeah 5770 certainly looks the part on my railway, she looked weird after painting but once the masking was off and transfers were on she looks great now in smart GWR green. I'm planning on buying a chassis for my ex mainline 5764 in green (old split chassis failed on me) but the best I can find is a second hand pannier for 30 quid on ebay. Do you know where I could get a chassis on its own for a good price? I'll see what I can find at a local model rail show coming up soon anyway. It'll be nice to get her going again, so I can have yet another pannier on my line, and for my (youtube) namesake! I'll paint her up in London transport maroon, L95, which is the appropriate LT number for 5764. Its about time I got a London transport pannier, I've had many chances to get one but always been tempted by something else that catches your eye that you were never interested in before until you see it in the flesh, if you know the feeling! I've also repainted a hornby Austerity 0-6-0 from maroon to WD black, ordered some etched nameplates from narrow planet, she's gonna be called RENOWN, named after a WW1 warship. I've got a manning wardle tank planned to build, there's a body to download online for 00 gauge, that you can 3d print to fit on the hornby terrier chassis. She'll be called DEVONSHIRE, named after the county of my railway, and the best county in my opinion, although you'll probably have a different opinion on that! Anyway I've waffled on a bit too much now! Do you have any projects or planning on scratch building or kit bashing etc. anything on your workbench at the moment?

All I could really suggest is a show like you have said, they seem to have no end of odd bits and peices dont they. Or perhaps ebay? I love the London Transport livery as well. I cant really disagree with you on Devon you know, I try and get out there quite a bit and the next layout I build after this one would likely be out that way somewhere! Perhaps second only to the good ol' Shires of York? They are some great names though. The next few bits I've got on are weathering a 9F at some point next week, and then I'll probably start working through some wagon kits - I'd like to build up a few nice long rakes of mineral wagons and vans etc. Looking forward to seeing how your Pannier turns out.

At first I thought you were going a bit light on the weathering but the finished result is spot on, just the right amount to give it that well worked look. Btw, I managed to get a CD of locos going through the very station I intend to model my layout after, on the old Waverley to Carlisle line. The notes on the CD even gives the locomotive class and numbers so I can get the actual loco to match the sound! Oh my goodness, the sound of the trains through my headphones is fantastic!

I got it off Amazon. The CD is titled “Atmospheric Pictures: Trains in the Night & Day. Peter Handford’s Steam Railway Recordings Volume 2”. It was when I read the notes and it said a V2 2-6-2 freight train goes through Steele Road Station just before dawn in the early hours of April 1961, that I thought “yesss, this is the one for me”. The track starts with tweety birds and a distant owl hoot. Some other tracks give the actual BR numbers of the locomotives. Do you have sound chips in your locos, or do you just run them quietly, keeping sound for the videos?

Very interesting, I'll take a look for that sounds like something I could also use! Speaking of V2s, did you see that Bachmann have a three new versions out this year - although they do seem very expensive. No chips in them, but they dont run quietly - there is quite a rumle! I just mute the origional sound on the clips when I edit them however, and then add the sound over the top.

Mouldy Raspberry I’ll have to check out those Bachmann V2s. I forgot about the vibration rumbles. The description ‘freight train’ had me wondering what exactly that is so I google imaged it and it showed pics of mixed goods. I thought it was a term for container trains. I remember when I was little, counting all the wagons going past and being amazed at the number lol. We had to cross the railway bridge on our way to the barbers in our short trousers. How did we manage in the snows of ‘63 ha ha?

Hahaha luckily the dust in my loft isnt too bad to be honest so I dont have too much of a problem. I tend to just hoover the track and occassionally give the platforms a quick clean. My thinking is everything around a steam operated railway would be pretty filthy anyway!

Your least favourite loco is definitely the way to go at first. Or some carriage roofs perhaps with the sides taped. I felt the exact same though when I got mine, but it really is pretty easy to get the hang of after a bit of practise.

At first my thoughts were to go lined green Evening Star, but then I thought it would be best in freight loco black - at least for a while. If I fancied a change then I could change to lined green later on... Looking forward to seeing how you weather your 9F. Are you going for a light weathering or the full unkempt state that the 9Fs typically found themselves in?

Yeah I like the black as well. Like you say; when you fancy a change you can switch it up. I think I’ll go heavier rather than lighter. When you look at state of them in some of the photos back in the day, I don’t really think you could over do it! I’ll keep you posted. Looking forward to your next update.

Watching with interest as thinking about buying an spray gun & compressor. Which do you use, please? Any recommendations or pitfalls in the type? Gives a very pleasing result and looks like a heavy lump of metal instead of plastic! Thanks for the demo.

I had thought about getting one for ages as well and would absolutely recommend it. I didn’t know very much about them but spoke to a few people that do, and they all recommend a ‘piston type’ compressor as this basically allows a really constant pressure and steady supply of air. They also recommended a double action airbrush so you can control the amount of paint very easily and precisely. They are dead easy to use as well I had a practise on a wagon for 5 minutes and then started on a loco..... you do have a play around thinning the paint though. Hope this was helpful mate. Break it up with a hammer after wrapping it in a plastic bag, and then literally just crush it when it’s in smaller chunks. Can get a bit messy!

This is an astonishing level of work and let's face it the result is superb..... But in my opinion, (and yes I know opinions are like arseholes...everybody has one) this is a bit too much.... I think that given the livery of British rail, it is unlikely that they would have allowed a loco to get in such a state.... it would look bad to the newly encumbered taxpayers! .... But that's only my opinion, which really does mean sod all!

I have to wholeheartedly disagree with you though simply because all the photos, videos, and people who worked under BR suggest the complete opposite! Once the decision had been made to scrap the steam fleet and move to diesel in the 1960s maintenance and cleaning nearly stopped on them all together. In most cases you couldn’t even see the tender logo and number because of the filth, steam was often leaking from the cylinders/boiler, limescale and rust covered the boiler and cylinders.. crazy how bad they were really. Why spend taxpayers money cleaning and maintaining locomotives that would be scrapped the following month/year? I’ll send a link to some 1960s footage. I have to say that the level of realism in your layout is just incredible, if feels like you have literally created a piece of the dales .... I love that area as I lived in York for 12 years and it is such a beautiful county! One thing that struck me is that everyone should be very grateful for being able to see your creation.... I am!

To be honest I thought the same as you when I started researching the period, I couldn’t believe how run down a lot of the network was then. Mouldy Raspberry I absolutely agree, but I’m currently watching your brick wall weathering video and learning yet more.... I love the cork walls too and the corrugated fencing is just brilliant.... I think one of the best things about this hobby is how we can always come up with something new to do to create what, I think in your case, is definitely “hyper” realistic scenes. You have a definite follower in me mate!
