After a brief glitch, I've re-posted this video. So what challenges do you have when weathering locomotives?

Years ago I lived near Kirkwood Missouri which was a very large U.P. mainline and I always saw patched S.P. and C.N.W ac4400cws near the Amtrak station there. Great memories. I'm planning on getting an N scale C.N.W ac4400cw for my layout and I might try to patch it too.

Patches are a great way to add variety to your layout, and quite prototypical too.

Hello, excellent work as always. Great techniques. It’s a good thing you are a great narrator. Your running commentary keeps us informed of what you are doing. Due to n scale being so small, it’s sometimes hard to follow along. So the narration is important, thanks. Off topic a bit. I grew up in America with British parents. Both kept their accents until they passed away. My 2 brothers and myself had a few “hybrid” words in our vocabulary. Not quite British, not quite American English. Hence my question... where did the pronunciation of “ dee cals “ become “ deck als?” This is a friendly question. Please don’t take offense. Thanks for another great tutorial. See ya next time.

Thanks Norman. I'm hoping that my videos going forward can give better views. The Union Pacific will be at the same angles as this one, but I've reconfigured my hobby space with better lighting and a top-down angle for filming. Hopefully it can give a better view. If it works, I may re-demonstrate some of my techniques with the better camera angles.

Oh, and my accent is western Canadian. For some reason, we pronounce "decal" differently than Americans do... and I think even different than the British. The only place in Canada that uses "Dee-cal" as the pronunciation is Quebec, and that's a carryover from French. If there's one thing I get flak on this channel for is how I pronounce the term for waterslide transfers :)

Some of these were, "hey, I'm going to try this out" to see how it worked. I did do some testing off-camera, but I have to say that the oilbrushers are a real time-saver.

Hi John, At the beginning of the process do you use any varnish? Clear or satin one?

JC you ask what are my challenges? Well I always make a point of disassembling completely when ever possible. So when a customer sends a loco for weathering and doesn’t include the exploded parts view that comes with it, it becomes a real challenge to take them apart without damaging any of the parts. Just so you know for next time the N scale truck side frames are one piece with the bottom of the truck. They just slip off with a bit of coaxing! Nice job, but you have to slow down! Do you always talk that fast? Just kidding!

I talk that fast when I'm nervous. I should really slow down :) Like you, figuring out how to take apart a locomotive without the exploded view can be worrying. I have an S4 that simply did not come with those instructions. It's next on the to-do list. Thanks for the tip on the side frames. I wasn't sure if I had to remove the whole assembly or not!

Nice thing about model railroading is that one can take a few liberties if we really want to. :)

Hi, I live in New Zealand and due to the recent issues with expensive shipping/supply, I am unsure how to do an SD40-2 In HO scale with everything that NZ could offer. Could you aid me?
@JCsRiptrack

What road are you doing your SD40-2 in? We could try to source some local materials. You can contact me through the "Contact Me" button on my channel and we can talk that way.

Hi John, What thinner do you use when you fade the oil paint from the oilbrusher during DOT fading process?

Wow! Thanks for sharing. Not sure I would be happy with the UP Patch. AKA Not a UP fan, and SP fan. LOL but I love what you did. Di you list everything you used? Or go to the Payreon for the list?

Thanks Vincent! You should be able to see everything I used in the "Show More" section just below the video. That's normally where I list the materials I use. :)

I handle the commissions over on my Patreon page. Locomotive weathering depends on the level of weathering, really. If you go here, you can get the info on how much a commission may cost, but I always consult with you on what you want before committing. www.patreon.com/jcs_riptrack You can email me through the "Contact" tab on the channel or on the Patreon page if you're interested in talking further!
