4 years later in 2024 - I personally started with a basic oval set in about late August/early September of 2023, with an Alaska engine, and 2 - 3 freight cars. The oval was made using Bachmann EZ track. Eventually I decided to get a passing side like what KATO has with Bachmann switches. After a while I noticed that KATO has a LOT more to offer for structures and track sets. So I decided to switch from Bachmann EZ track to KATO Unitrack. I now have some crossing grades, including an automatic crossing grade. A bunch of scenery materials from Woodland Scenics mostly, and KATO's Viaduct variation track that I bought from my local train store. However I have yet to really use any of the scenery equipment because I'm currently working with a 6ft x 3ft white plastic folding table. In all fairness, this alone can give me quite some space to work with when it comes to N Scale. But I'm envisioning a grand scale layout that has all the bells and whistles from structures to lights and ambient sounds(not just the engine sounds of a train). So in order for this to work, I need to get a wooden 4ft x 8ft table created. The next things I plan to purchase are KATO's V3 Railyard track system along with some more switches to add more variation. As well as hopefully switch to DCC eventually.

Working on weathering, fading, and aging a short line GP30 used by Carolina Coastal Railroad (CLNA). These videos are so helpful! Coming up with all kinds of ideas to make it look like the actual faded, weathered, used locomotive. It's original dark blue has faded in the Southern sunny heat and rusted. Adding not only rust, but some grey to simulate the bluish bare metal that has been exposed around the rusted areas has made it look very much like the prototype. Thank you so much!!!

I’ve repainted several Leased LMX locos to Monongahela locomotives. The grey color is a perfect match. Watching your videos to learn how to weather a GP30 old locomotive the Carolina Coastal Railroad let fade and rust but used on their lines. I’m using Carolina Coastal and Blue Ridge Southern in my layout.

I am currently working on a Heljan Class 60 in O Gauge and I am numbering this model as 60092. All was going great until I used the Humbrol Satin Varnish. It was a hit and miss for me because it sealed in the smaller decals for the locomotive numbers just fine on the front and side. It took a second coat of varnish no problem but on the larger decal. It really didn't like it at all and now I have a wrinkled and distorted "DB" logo on the offside. Just trying to think how to fix it and proceed or I will take it off and replace it with a new one and use the Vallejo Satin Varnish instead. Best to avoid Humbrol clear coats and varnishes as they are a sure way to ruin a nice model train. I am not afraid to try again until I get it right. I love modelling and I learn from these experiences to get better. Nice to meet you and I enjoyed the video. All the best Peter.

On small yards in secondary mainlines the main its self is used as the lead. The switch crews clear for mainline movement, making timing and efficiency paramount. As for lead length, some shortline switching railroad's lead is also the interchange track. A derail is usually used near the larger railroad's switch, and this limits the length of the lead, making it a much shorter than the yard tracks. Both of these examples allow for interesting operations and are prototypical.

Uhhh...using a blade, all I did was end up cutting the decal, rather than move it. I don't think trying to move a decal with an X-acto-knife type blade is a good idea.
@JCsRiptrack
@JCsRiptrack Ай бұрын
It is a gentle touch, and if it isn’t moving, wet the decal slightly and do that. Otherwise a brush can work, the tip of a hobby knife is more accurate. However, if the decal is old or brittle, then it could disintegrate.

great video, thanks. I have a specific issue ... I have previously painted a "Tiger I" road wheels and hull with XF-60, and then flat clear coated with Tamiya TS-80 Flat Clear coat. I want to use (repaint) XF-88 dark yellow 2, instead ... because I think the XF-60 turned out too dark. Am I ok to spray XF-88 over top of the TS-80 Flat Clear coat? Or could I spray Tamiya fine primer (first), and then apply XF-88? Or lastly, do I need to remove the flat clear coat and paint entirely ... before changing color? Thanks for any help with this.

First time watching, subscribed, and great discussion! I use testors enamel spray cans, and other spray cans, for my airplane model painting. Will Pledge future, not mixed, work the best (airbrush) as a clearcoat that will prevent a lot of the problems you discussed in the video? My plan is to apply a clearcoat, decals, clearcoat, then Testors Spray Lacquer (126OT Dullcote) for final flat finish.

I notice you pronounce KATO as CAT-OH. I always say KAITE-OH. I find a lot of US modelers call it CAT-OH as well. I imagine CAT-OH is right but I like the sound of KAYE-T-oh better.

decckles is the right pronunciation. Does not irritate me. What does irritate (beyond description) is the US pronunciation of soldering it requires the "L". NOT soddering. That has to do with sod. it is S-O-L-D-E-Ring. With and "L". The giveaway is, um, in the spelling.

I bought my son a train set for his 4th birthday. It took over the entire basement after a few years. I taught my son carpentry, how to work with plaster of Paris and similar materials, how to wire things up and later how to maintain things. He was into it for many years but eventually went his own way. I still run the lay out and maintain it. It's great therapy for the old man. I find using "stock" track with the attached road bed pretty limiting. I like using flex track over cork and a good plan. But it's good to get your first layout going. You'll learn a lot from that experience. Oh, and I should mention that a good layout is never done...

A tip for next time: take photos between the steps so that you can see the difference. This way I only see a locomotive and brushes flying across the screen. ;) Apart from that, an insanely great weathering! Perfect! :)

Yes I started with N gauge under my bed when I was about 10 years old... It was wonderful. I did HO with my children and gave them everything when they moved out. HO is great but my wife like N gauge (it fits better in small spaces). Hats off for your Information section... I am determined to build the N gauge layout this year and your documentation and "store" should make make this easier easier for me...

Isn't there a mistake at 13:33 - a train arriving should go to the arrival/departure track first then get the switcher to take the train from the opposite end and feed it into the yard via the yard lead before the big loco can then go to the rip track or pick up some other train from the yard to depart? In other words, stopping a train on the main line and then running around would not be allowed?? (as it would foul the mainline, i.e. it would be unsafe + inefficient to stop a train on the main line)

Sound like a math class at the start, that's a bit of a turn off. What happen to inch measurements? They've (anybody on either side of the oceans) been trying for over 50 years to make us metric. There making headway but there not there yet. Maybe Kato should label there packaging in both measurements.
