They way you describe how to do things is great Martin, so much so, that I have the confidence to go and weather my n gauge steam engines... I was a bit uneasy, (well a lot really) to do them but now after this I will have a go....Thanks....

Pretty good job. Only one thing: to make it more realistic, you should cover or cleanse the markings and numbers on the lokomotive, they were swiped with a pice of cloth regularly, so you can always read that data withou problems

A GREAT tutorial as usual. And the result is not very far from Märklin's own factory patina. I am big fan of your work!

Hi Marklin. This aspect particularly fascinates me, making the models look real. Does it devalue them at all? I remember as a kid I used to do this with my toys/soldiers equipment, but I had no idea what I was doing. I wish I'd seen your videos. Do you ever pick a photo of the original and try and copy it?

Hej Martin, blir så inspirerad så jag skall ta o testa o vädra några av mina lok men en fråga angående färgerna. Varför använder du Vallejo acrylics o späder dem, jag såg att det fanns färdig som hetteValljeo model air?
@marklinofsweden
@marklinofsweden 8 жыл бұрын
+Patrik Carlsson Hej Patrik! 👍

Excellent videos, I love watching your tutorials! Just a general question though, How much do these locos cost on average? I'm in the market for steam locos and don't think a few German BRs could hurt. I know this a bit of an old video, but if you have any records or memory of them, it would help, as well as if they're purchased from eBay or a different site. Love from America!

It can cost around >400€ for a main line locomotive new but you can get them on second hand websites and branch line locomotives cost around 200€ I hope this will help you

Love your tutorials :) Im wondering what with all the moving parts on the loco like wheels etc, wont they be greasy and hard to move?
@wall4818
@wall4818 3 жыл бұрын
Grease actually helps keep loco valve gear and wheels move smoothly. It's not shown here (I don't think) but he shows in another video that he wipes away any paint or powder that could get on the pickups and power rail on the bottom of the tender.

A very different approach to what i usually do. I used to weather and age my stuff with lots of different washes, working with a brush. Using those revell aquacolors. First, full black wash for the base, then adding layers of varying brown, black, red tones, adding some diluted white here and there, just really going to town. Then break it with a black wash, and dry brush the highlights with white with some grey in it. Be very careful with this, you can ruin it here rather easily if overdone. Maybe another layer of black, to make it less stingy if needed, some clearcoat and it's done. This is stolen straight from kunstmichi another youtuber who does this, and it works well for me. On a side note: I do not have an airbrush.

Is there any problem with the powder or paint getting into the wheels/valve gear etc? Do you need to run the engine over a wheel-cleaning track or do something similar before running this engine after weathering? By the way, I've got the Trix 2-rail DC version of this engine, and when I work up the courage to do so I might also weather it like how you did.

Tbh, just test it. Be careful with middle ski contacts, esp. with clearcoat. On the wheels, if there are problems, run the wheel against a fine nail polishing strip and test again. The best way to keep rails and wheels clean is to shove them through corners.

@@marklinofsweden Nice! Mine's probably the LNER Gresley Classes A1 and A3. It'll be the first locomotive I purchase when I start my railroad. Out of curiosity, do you buy whichever locomotives you like or do you stay consistent with for example the country of the railway (for example only DB locomotives or British Railways locotmovies)?
@marklinofsweden
@marklinofsweden 3 жыл бұрын
@@yungrabobank4691 Hi. Yeah, kind of consistent.. Only DB and Swedish State Railways (SJ) trains and mainly Era III and IV. However.. Within those segments I choose the locomotives and cars I like. But I tend to keep the train consists kind of prototypical. From start (10 years ago) I didn´t care at all about that. I just combined trains wild.

Martin, you make nice videos, nice tutorials. However, you never tell the people in advance that weathering those expensive locomotives may seriously degrade the value..!!! Anyone who might consider weathering their rolling stock MUST take into account that as soon as they start spraying those little gems, they immediately lower the value of these items. And if they ever want to sell them, they should expect to get VERY little money for it.....!! My advice is, to never weather such a model, if it is a very expensive, very rare, or a special edition/limited production model. Especially if you also keep the original boxes in good condition. Just saying..........

Hi! Actually.. The weathered Mäklin locomotives I sold on ebay has sold at same price as non-weathered. I don’t see that price drop at all. Sold at least 15 locomotives weathered.

I am glad to hear that. My personal experience in the model railroad world is different, though. I must add, that I was very active in that hobby but it was over 25 years ago. Apparently things have changed. Today, eBay and other similar sites offer very, very few weathered trains. Still, I would never buy a weathered locomotive. Even if it has been done very well. I'd rather do it myself. But because of their proces, I have never weathered one. I just don't dare....!! ;-) And never forget : Martin, thank you. You make great videos and you show us a lot of inspiration. Keep those videos coming !

The value of a model to me is in running it on my layour or displaying it. Both of those are enhanced by realistic weathering. I don't care about the resale value, because my goal isn't to make money by selling model trains. If, at some point in the future, I don't want some of my models any more then, sure I'll sell them. But any money I get for that is a bonus. If I buy a locomotive for £250 (or whatever price), it's because I expect to get £250 worth of enjoyment from it. When I've finished with it, I don't care if it's worth £50 or £100 or still worth £250, because I've already had my money's worth from it. Anyone who's buying models as a collector and who wants to profit from selling them should already know what increases or decreases the value of a model. This channel is clearly not aimed at that section of the market.
