Nice work! Hey, a quick easy tip on covering holes, use foam earplugs. Cheap, quick, and seal up nicely.

Thanks to The Custom Saber Shop and Rob Petkau with Gensis Custom Sabers for doing this. The technics of a Sabersmith go a long way in helping those that are just starting out. One question; Have you ever baked the paint with a toaster oven.
@MadcowGenesis10 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I have not used baked enamel paint - as I use a powdercoating system for most things. For weathering I sometimes seal the dried paint in with a powdercoated matte clear coat.

Hey man I'm sorta super late to the party but what kind of clear powder coating are you using?

It can work on certain areas, but using a small amount of Gun Blue can add a kind of darkening to metal. Just be safe with it!

Hey Rob, Great work and your tips are extremely helpful. Any information on how to create a rusting effect in addition to the weathering?
@MadcowGenesis9 жыл бұрын
Rusting/oxidizing depends on the metal. You can simulate it with paint, or with a product like Aluminum Black by Birchwood Casey.
@coldstarfilms5399 жыл бұрын
Another good paint color for rust is sienna. I use a watered down acrylic

Are microfiber cloths suitable instead of a rag to wipe down the spray paint? Or regular towels? Or will it ruin the effect?
@MadcowGenesis8 жыл бұрын
Sure, but you will ruin the cloth
@Pyridius8 жыл бұрын
I'll probably look for a rag then. As a side note, what kind of spray paint would you recommend in terms of glossiness to go for a weathered look?
@MadcowGenesis8 жыл бұрын
Definitely a matte or flat black.

I know this is an old video but would anyone know how to best remove weathering from prodigal son? I'd like to get it to match better to a V2 and was thinking sand paper or maybe a remover of some kind?
@loganmc57935 жыл бұрын
I have a question, so I bought a black prophecy v3 stunt lightsaber from ultrasabers would it be best to weather it with sandpaper since it’s a black aluminum?
@colehealey29253 жыл бұрын
probably late, but sandpaper will leave marks that make it obvious that its been sanded, Steel wool will take longer but it gives a more convincing result imo
@Da_Swifta9 жыл бұрын
Can you spray paint your lightsaber and then clear coat it to keep the spray paint from wearing off?

Do you need to remove the electronics or can you weather it with them still inside?
@MadcowGenesis8 жыл бұрын
You could tape up all the openings/cracks and carefully weather it with electronics in. I would recommend removing the battery or cutting power with a kill key first.

Awesome video Rob! I have a question for you. That shroud on the more weathered saber.... is that a standard part or was made custom? I'm asking because although that saber design is really cool without it, for me that turns it into a classic, pretty darn ideal saber hilt....I've been seriously eying sabers. thanks for your answer in advance. Again, really good video again....

Would this be a good method for getting the weathering right on a Luke V2 saber?

I gotta ask... If the weapon of a Jedi Knight is they're saber.. Why would it be subject to dirt and grime....A Jedi would clean his weapon regularly... As would a with... The weathered concept wouldn't apply.. No Jedi would allow his or her weapon to be so dirty.. Think about it
