During his Dec. 22, 2020, live stream, Adam did finishing work on a Beskar Ingot prop, which was sent courtesy of Khal from thesaberarmory.com and krsabers.com (who previously supplied the Thermal Detonator prop that Adam assembled in a ODB!). It's the perfect combination of two things we know Tested fans love: weathering and The Mandalorian series!

Yes and Damascus billets aren’t even expensive anymore. You can get incredibly patterned Damascus billets from China and easily forge them or machine them into the shade. Something even nicer looking and more historically relevant would be REAL wrought iron. not fence material or “wrought iron style“ but ACTUAL wrought iron … (there’s a big difference). It has a pattern similar to Damascus but in my opinion better looking. It resembles wood grain… And is cheap and easy enough to get a hold of if you know where to look. I have several wrought iron 8 foot long support bars pulled from an old 18th century building that Collapsed. And after ages of rusting and corrosion it has that beautiful wood grain pattern. From the natural steel grain structure because of how wrought iron was made. It’s not the easiest stuff to forge unless you have some experience… But definitely worth giving it a try. And a much more beautiful and subtle appearance than Damascus in my opinion. And has some historic relevance. Which is cool.

Just a side note: the incredible human beings at theRPF in thier endless quest for prop accuracy, have found that the actual props seem to be poured resin from a cast as the backs are slightly recessed with the edges just barely curved upward as result of casting. They even noticed ripples or waves on the back. So while these aluminum ingots are the best idealized representation, for my own versions I will sand these and try to maintain the sharpest edge on the back to give homage to the original props. Just food for thought.

Love your sanding story. Reminded me when I spent a summer working in the mold finishing room at a tool & mold shop. Now that’s a place to learn about sanding....a plastic injection part’s final finish is heavily dependent on the hand-sanded finish. Imagine taking a rough milled surface to a mirror finish all by hand-what a lost trade!

I love that Adam isn't satisfied with estimating the thickness of the paper when explaining the depth of the beskar ridges. Why guess when you can know for sure?

What's astounding isn't the things you make or how you make them in my humble opinion. What's truly astounding is how you think up the ways to get these things to become what they are in yours and everyone else's mind. (E.g. Oil based paint to flow into the ridges and then sanding to only remove the paint from the tops of the ridges and leave the rest in).

The warm air won't speed the drying of the oil paint, but it will help evaporate the turps. for any of you trying this you're best off using an Alkyd oil paint if you want it to dry swiftly. And William Payne was an 18th century water colour artist.

I buy big my paper, also, of the thick variety, as large sheets of 1mx50cm. The textured kind. Excellent for shop work, either cut as smaller stock, templates, or even as a working surface to help distinguish parts. There's also a more wavy type of paper that's the best working surface for small parts, as the texture keeps items from rolling about.

So if you want a surface really flat, you want to also switch which side you pull towards you. Since that side will get ground down more because of the interaction of friction combined with your pulling motion. I used to lap CPU's and CPU coolers for fun with this technique, and I managed to get them flat enough that I got a "Van Der Waals force" between them.

Watching your quick-drying process gave me an idea for a one-day build: 1) connect a hairdryer to a length of hose, 2) either put it on a spring-loaded coil mechanism mounted on the ceiling, or find a flexible stand for it, so it can hang over the workbench but extend a bit; 3) add a short nozzle to the hose for grip, and 4) mount some kind of lever on it for on/off, so you can just grab the thing and point it at wherever you want to apply some heat. Tada, no more picking up and putting away of the hairdryer, and better ergonomics - holding that ancient hairdryer like that surely can't be comfortable?

That you might know. His name is Don Bies and he came in originally as a Modeller, his audition piece that got him hired was the face of the monster in Victor Gianella’s Frankenstein in which I played Victor’s father Alphonse. Anyway, rather than a green face with bolts coming out of the neck he built the face of the monster as if the top layer of skin was just gone, and the audience could see all the face, neck and eye socket muscles. So given that you did modeling there perhaps you two crossed paths. If my name is familiar to you it’s because you sent us a tweet from backstage in Chicago which thrilled my 10? Year old son. We saw two of them and they were Terrific fun. We of course also saw your exhibit at The Museum of science and Industry on Lake Michigan which was also great. Thanks so much for doing this. It’s a tough time to sponsor anyone right now but I hope to be able to soon! Happy Holidays!!!
