In this second video of the Weaver build, we will make the Crankshaft and Connecting Rod for a 1cc 2-stroke glow engine. These parts at first seem fairly complicated to make, but a bit of tool making and some handwork with files makes quick work of them. Stay tuned for the rest of the build series where we make the rest of the parts of the engine, and then a remote controlled airplane to fly it on!

I’d love to see you do an episode on the tools and machines you use on this build. I’m thinking Sherline on the lathe, but not sure! Adding your opinion of each would be nice too! Doesn’t have to be a long vid, just an overview! Loving this build!

you are correct on the sherline, i've got the lathe and mill. i also have a grizzly milling machine, they call it the "small mill", but it's quite big to me!

@@JellyFishMachineI ordered the mill today after seeing the results you’re getting from yours. I’ve got a bigger Seig mill and lathe that I love, but I’m having to downsize. What tap are you using @ 1:48?

Awesome! you'll like it, i'm still surprised at how well they perform. the best thing you can do with the sherline mill is focus on making rigid setups, tools as short as possible is critical. the one place the sherlines aren't great is rigidity, they need all the help they can get in that department. but so long as you keep that in mind, it's absolutely wonderful. Fabulous! I've just started my first engine build, a 5cc Sparey deisel and finding it all quite a challenge as the lathe is 100 years old and I have no milling machine. Great to see such precision, something I lack! Looking forward to the rest of this build.

Thanks! the larger engine should be very forgiving, just pay close attention to the port locations and the piston to cylinder fit, those are the most critical. if you want a few ideas about getting by without a milling machine, read through the article for Richard Gordon's "Nano 0.1cc" diesel, he worked some magic on that engine with only a lathe. grabcad.com/library/gordon-nano-0-1cc-aero-engine-1

If this is your first foray into KZbin videos, you are doing a great job. I find conrods to be much harder to make than they appear. Particularly as I have an aversion to filing. My last engine, a boxer twin diesel based on the Boll Aero 1.8cc, obviously needed 2 and 2 identical ones at that. I spent a whole day making 2 fixtures to hold the turned blanks so I could mill flat, drill and round the ends. The machining then took about 30 mins for the pair.

Thanks, that means a lot to hear! and yes conrods are very wierd parts to hold and make. i ended up filing mine because i didn't want to spend a whole day making fixtures lol. i've found a little practice filing to be very useful, it's one of those things that feels like a waste of time the whole time you're doing it but in the end is actually faster for many things, there will be more filing later in the series, in the carburetor.

Nice work. I like the calming music. I'm curious as to why you harden the conrod? I've not heard of that before. Is it to reduce wear?
@JellyFishMachine
@JellyFishMachine 5 ай бұрын
Thanks. It likely doesnt make much difference to harden it, it's just the tool steel i have is very soft as delivered

the sherline machines are a very good value, especially if you get one of there complete sets with all of the acessories. in my case though i've been collecting for around 13 years now so the best way is to be patient!
