In today's video, Chuck shows how to make a simple leather dog collar and lead using 7/8 oz. leather. You can use these same basic steps to create a more intricate set or add personalization with stamping and tooling. You can even add some spots or spikes for an edgier look.
If you're wanting to make a more heavy-duty collar for a larger dog, you can go with a heavier weight leather or add a liner. We would also recommend using Chicago screws or tubular rivets for larger collars, this will add some strength.

I made a video the other day for a friend of the leathers I have so he could pick what one he wants for a wallet and I realised I started using chucks mannerisms and talking like him through it. Which sounds slightly weird with a thick westcountry accent lol. One suggestion I would add for large dog breeds starting as puppies, 2 out the 3 dog collars I have made (for dogs, I usually make collars & chokers for humans) I have used a Martingale design. Basically two buckles on a short segment of leather in the back (about 4 to 6" in length for large dog breed). And then the main part of the collar has two billet ends. This allows for twice as much growth room as the animal grows than a regular collar would. Just loosen up one side and then the other as needed. So the pet can have a single collar for most of its life than replacing a couple times as they grow. My customer liked it because he could then afford a fancier collar form the start. One customer wanted the leash attachment point to be on top but still have a dog tag hook on bottom With the leash attachment point on top, it slowed the dog down a bit more. This is good for a well trained dog. I recommend if the dog is very energetic though adding a harness to the rig to keep dog from choking no matter the placement of the leash. Just my experience,

This is my favorite dog collar instruction. I made the collar for our 65lb English Lab but did use Chi screws instead of rivets. The rivets that are manufactured these days are suspect, esp since there isn’t a leather store here so that leaves buying them sight unseen and made of unknown metal off the internet.

When I use a screw (Chicago screw) I add a dab of varnish to the screw part . That way it does not come unscrewed at an unexpected time. Love this as I have new doggies this year ! Thank you for all your work.

Nice! Your timing is always amazing with what I'm considering as my next project!! We are getting a puppy in the next few weeks so he won't need anything this sturdy just yet but will a little later. Instead of Chicago screws, wouldn't solid copper rivets work, too? I've used them in other projects and found they are extremely strong and hold well. Also, would a latigo have too much stretch? I like their outdoor qualities in an oil tanned look. Thanks again- love your excitement and passion for your craft!!

Hi Mark, Yes, solid copper rivets would work great as well! They're extremely strong. You will get some stretch with latigo but it should still work well for a collar and lead.

Im loving all of these tutorials and this one so far is my favorite. I love the chestnut color as well. I’m looking into making a couple of collars for the dogs, they’re both roughly 80 lbs and not so good on the leash. What size thickness do you recommend?

Hi Holly, I would say 9/10 oz. or heavier if you've got a dog that tugs on the leash a lot. This will give you a nice, heavy-duty collar.

My customer wants a D ring and he wants the name on the back of it as well. im trying to wrap my head around this, if the D ring is between theend rivets, where do i put the name? maybe i just have to start the color using this guide and ill see it. its getting some roses and leaves but no color, justa plain brown. another concern, does the D ring serve as both the tag holder and an attachment for the lead?

Hi Joanna, I don't think so - animals are stronger than we sometimes think and this just ensures your product is extra strong. Especially for larger dogs!

Hi there, Yes, it is a leather balm with atom wax and becomes shiny when you buff it. It can be used as a sealer instead of resolene.

Hi Chuck I have a question for you. I bought a No2 edge beveller from the what I thought was the UK. It turned out to be cheap tat from China and I believe ruined my work as it ripped the edges apart. Could this have been the reason and should I buy a quality tool. Rachael (from the UK)

Rachael Wyatt - I also had a cheap edge beveller from another company that just wasn't working at all. I finally ponied up for the Master tools beveller from Weaver and it made a world of difference! It was pricey but well worth it. I promise I'm not getting any compensation for saying that.

Hi Miguel, I just use a sharp utility knife and a straight edge with rubbing backing. The plastic sheet is slick so a cork back or rubber back ruler is important to keep it from sliding when cutting.

Hi Chuck, nice video of the dog collar make. I don’t think moving the “D” ring, around to the middle of the collar, is a good idea. It will make the edges of the buckle to dig into the dogs windpipe and cause unnecessary suffering. No offence, I had to point it out. Other than that, I’ve found your videos to be of great help.
