The blotchy effect reminds me of antique photos or daguerreotypes. I personally find Tan Kote makes the colors pop. I apply it with an airbrush, so it doesn’t smear the paint. I also find that, even after drying for a full day, the antique stain will still leave a trace over the colors. Great video!

@Daniel Reach you are welcome, I'm going to keep bigging you up buddy because no doubt I will have hundreds of questions once my shoulder heals up. I'm going to start drawing up some plans and get some ideas into a notebook. I've got a brilliant a3 engineering drawing board I use so I will be able to draw full size I also have a good selection of French curves I also have circle and ellipse templates to help with the design. I think the French curves will be pretty helpful with the floral designs. I'm aiming to start drawing at the beginning of next week so we will see how I get on. I can write with both hands but I've never tried to draw with my left hand. I got told it's something people should try as it's a challenge and they used it as therapy if someone has taken a stroke or a brain injury. So I might try that too, anyway thank you for the education and I'm looking forward to your next show please keep up the good work as it's extremely helpful and much appreciated, all the best from my family to yours bud.

A great video that almost strikes that perfect balance between project video and how to video. For context, to me a project video is more heavily on the side of showing over telling, whereas a how to explains every step.

Hello Daniel, enjoy the vids, learning a bunch. Does the double sided tape give a permanent adhesion to the leather ? Not everyone is gentle in putting cards away
@DanielReachCreations
@DanielReachCreations Жыл бұрын
Great question! Double sided tape definitely isn't as strong of a bond as, say... contact cement, that being said, is a pretty strong bond. Aaron at Makers Leather Supply shows this method in his video and really speaks highly of it. (He designed the template)
@jimgreat7622

I have used double sided tape for this application and have not had a single failure in the years I’ve used it. Occasionally I would use the tape only at the top of each slot and still no failure.

I made a bunch of these with the double sided tape and if you leave the wallet in a hot space for awhile the tape melts. I’m remaking a bunch of them with a new design. In my experience this method of pockets isn’t a lasting solution

I like this wallet, and it looks like a fun project…but the stars are driving me crazy. They look random and not aligned like a flag. Also what stencil did you use for the stars?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply Жыл бұрын
Daniel drew the stars and then we digitized the pattern using photoshop. the pattern can found via the link below, you can always change the pattern of stars. cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0611/5809/7036/files/Stars_and_Stripes_Pattern_Updated.pdf?v=1687284211

You're right, they aren't laid out like a real american flag. The main reasons were, 1. It's a stylized flag. 2. It allowed me to make the stars big enough so they would stand out. It also put them in a size rang that most people could carve. Good eye! The stars were carved by hand, not stamped, but I believe there are .75" stamps out there that would work.

nice wallet, and nicely done, but I am curious as to why you used lacing chisels for creating your stitching lines/holes??
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply Жыл бұрын
Hi there, these are straight blade chisels. They can be used for lacing but they are also great for hand stitching, just a different option from the more traditional diamond shape.
@northwoods3d
@northwoods3d Жыл бұрын
@@WeaverLeatherSupply - not really.. the flat lacing chisels leave a rather long hole, not ideal for stitching with thread. It also confuses new people to see things like this, thinking that is what they need to purchase for sewing when in many instances it would be totally wrong... Just because you can does not mean you should.

@DanielReachCreations

Chuck has done several videos on this topic that would be a great place to start. Just type in something like "Weaver, Chuck Dorsett, Dye" and see what comes up. As far as a quick answer, my favorite dyes are Fiebings Pro Dye. The reason they are my go-to is because they will only go so dark, then they level off. Most of the other dyes will just keep getting darker and darker the more you add, which means you can end up with blotchy dye.

I realize most people have respect for the flag but not enough. "What is the basic flag code? The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free. The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free." I find it odd that it's always the {Ultra Patriotic} that actually show it the least respect.

It may go against a "code" but I like it and think it's very patriotic.

the code is not mandatory: it uses non-binding language like "should" and "custom" throughout and does not prescribe any penalties for failure to follow the guidelines. It was "not intended to proscribe conduct"
@poeboyjackson
@poeboyjackson Жыл бұрын
So that means no flag lapel pins, no flag stickers on cars. What about our military wearing flag patches on their uniforms going in to battle. Decals on law enforcement vehicles? The flag has been altered (festooned?) numerous times over the course of our history by adding more stars as we added more states. There are many ways to denigrate our great flag that are absolutely abhorrent, but I don't believe the founding fathers would have a problem with anyone displaying it proudly in a manner that is not disrespectful and shows nothing but pride in our flag and our great country.

Hey Daniel, I enjoy your videos, but wanted to let you know that the term "Stars & Bars" is a Confederate reference to the First National Confederate Flag during the American Civil War period and not to the Stars & Stripes or Ol' Glory. I'm personally not offended, but I wanted you to know & hopefully have a better understanding of the terminology. Keep up the great my friend. America, let's all believe in America again! Respectfully Yours: Shawn W Bell

Shawn, thank you for taking the time to let me know in such a friendly way. I grew up in the south, and never knew that. I'll pass it along to the boss and let her decide if she'd like to clip that intro out of the video. KZbin has a feature where you can pull stuff out of a video after its been published. They might want to use it here. Thanks again!

There are some things the American flag shouldn't be used for, it used to be illegal to use it for clothing and such but was found to be against a person's freedom of speech. BUT. That doesn't mean we should disrespect the flag by wearing it as clothing, underwear and such. consider that a wallet is generally sat on. As the flag should never touch the ground consider someone making the flag into a doormat, not to mention what that intent would entail!
