Weaving Ta'ovala and fine mats have long been the main source of income for weavers from the small island of Kotu in the Ha'apai group, and as Soana K-Aholelei reports, it's a labour of love for small community.

Is the Samoan mat made the same way? We use Samoan mats and find them to be very durable, soft and pliable compared to our harakeke mats. Our mats are not as flexible as your own and are quite brittle and if folded will break. I really love your the growing surge and interest in retaining one's weaving and culture. Our mats are made in runs, length ways and are woven together on the long edge. We refer to this as papa, usually runs of four and the whole weaving process as raranga, "weave." The kupu rangatira stems from raranga, the first run is, parents and children, the 2nd closest relatives, uncles aunts and cousins. 3rd hapu or tribe, and 4th, gathering of related tribes with a common ancestor, hence iwi. These are woven together and the weaver becomes the rangatira, to bring together. Thanks for sharing your culture especially your weaving ladies, I believe they should receive something according to your culture in this new age, keep it up.

Yup the Samoan ie toga or ie sae is made the exact same way but it’s strands are thinner and softer compared to Tongan kie. Samoa basically is the finest weavers followed by Tongans as we all adore the Samoan fine mats because it’s soft what we call in Tonga “molu’

It’s called ie toga because it refers to Tonga, the finest weave comes from Tongan weavers NOT Samoans. There is a fine weave using a finer weft that involves stripping the fibres very finely like splitting hairs and it’s reference is just that. Samoans can make fine mats but not the same as the Tongan fine mat weaver.
