Education is not just taught in schools ...what these weavers have is a ZEN education which is more practical and wisdom comes from mastery over something whatever that may be. Why should the be made to feel some insignificance for not attending school when they apprenticed with masters. This attitude must change not the practice of apprenticeship. And ultimately if teachers make the lowest wages in India then why should a weaver question himself? Weaving at home is common place in the nation of khadi production. Life is integral to work not its opposite. India must continue to support these craftsmen and women by setting standards in production to protect and serve these makers for their well being and livelihoods. This is the responsibility of the nation born from this craft. If they did yoga perhaps it would help their pains as well. Age is all our burden ...sitting on computers for years destroys your eyes and ruins your back. Carpal tunnel syndrome is common. All repetition is dangerous when followed over years. Lack of work leads to ruin.....so better to be grateful for the work and figure out methods of strengthening and well being in community. Power in numbers. Weavers union? Gandhi missed the boat on this one as he empowered the government to manage the weavers not the opposite.

Thanks for sharing . It important to generate demand of sustainable craft practices which takes care of artisan health and environment . Since handloom Industry is the second most employment generating industry of India , knowledge on Crafts and their sustainable practices should be a prime subject which all kids should explore !

Both state and central governments are spending billions for weavers but nothing reaching to low level. The directors and managers are eating almost 90% and 10% shall be under red tape. You will find minimum 7-10 departments are involved in each states for weavers but nothing is done finally. We make everything in india but still we have a good technology to improve their life.
