Thank you for the open window on these Peruvian Indians. The weaving by the Mama is magnificent. The scarves should bring them riches, yet the husband complains of rising prices. Always, the indigenous people have treasures in their traditions and beautiful costumes, and wide-eyed children, yet they live at a subsistence level of monetary poverty. Do they see themselves as poor? Not in the way we see it, but they are so so strong, from necessity.

Yes, this a lovely work on a Peruvian backstrap loom with a traditional flat warp. A typical kind of „staked“ loom, means there is no furniture or station, the loom gets connected to. She works just with one heddle, most westerners get headache about how this may works or don‘t even realize the genius within. And there is no reed comb, so how she manages the width, even she uses no temple (width-holder) either? Most western weavers won‘t be able to answer these questions. But there were and there are still these times, authors were able to judge these primitive. Still nowadays museum collection describe looms like this as primitive devices do savages! It states anyway how primitive educated authors and academic directors in position can act, without any clue or skills of their own weaving cultures. But no one can cope with her! And watch her how quick she reads the patterns into these thousand threads! These skills base on decades of weaving experiences on plenty of warps! Her ability to work without a temple bases on her weft insertion close to the breast beam combined with high attention on the strength of insertion. Any insertion is like the following one. Working with just one heddle rod is something, that combines all authentic loin looms of the world, what leads us to the opinion, that they all may be connected historically, but there is no proof! This one heddle works by a special construction of the lease sticks. The last of both is bigger or a tube, that builds the natural shed. The second shed is built by lifting the heddle rod! Genius, right?! And that is where the flexible tension of backstrap looms comes into the game of importance. Opening such a shed by lifting with your arm becomes quick to muscle pain if you try that with constantly tensioned warp on a frame loom. The flexibility of body-tensioned looms eases this problem! That‘s the point where frame looms follow a different politic, they decided to lift the heddle bars, they need plenty of, by treadles. Not just sometimes it needs a genius to keep simple! Complexity easily overcomes the simple; at the end just the genius survives, with the little help of knowledge of some sticks and threads! Even they are in trouble with money, wife needs a new jacket, husbands shaves the sheeps! Is there no wool-worth around the next bend? ;-) I bet at the end their cultural stock is much more ensured than any stock-exchange market ever will be!
