Weaving mini tutorial 1: PLAIN WEAVE

I am so glad I ordered a loom with a heddle bar. I crochet graphgans,( blankets with pictures) and I want to use my patterns for quilts and make them by weaving in hopes that they will be completed faster. Crocheting by hand takes forever, especially when you want to give them for gifts on a deadline. (I have this Christmas quilt that I have not finished in 7 years. It will cover my full size bed when done. I also have a blanket for my oldest grand daughter that needs to be finished. I don't want to start anything new till I can get these finished..I have wanted to learn to weave forever. I am hoping I can learn it quick..

I would like to buy a heddlle bar...just started but my loom didn't include one & now just found out about this tool. My questions(maybe you answered elsewhere))...do I warp my loom before or after placing the bar on,do I warp each slot or alternate them? It looked as if it was alternate. What's the difference between shorter & longer slots? Hope my questions made sense. I'm a bit frustrated but want to continue & learn. Thanks so much for your instructions😊

Hi Rita, The warp doesn't have to be thin. I generally choose thinner warp in a neutral colour so that it's less visible and doesn't 'interfere' with the weft design. However, you can absolutely make the warp and weft a similar weight (like in most fabric your clothes are made of), in which case your weft thread will be more visible. You can also use different colours of warp thread to create a pattern, e.g. tartan (check / plaid), houndstooth, diamonds, and many more. One thing to keep in mind is that the warp should be very strong and not have much stretch or give. If a warp thread breaks, especially whilst weaving, it's much harder to fix than a weft thread snapping. If warp thread is stretchy, it will stretch out as you weave, decreasing the tension and making it difficult to weave across. Plus, it could retract once taken off the loom, which will make the weaving look 'bunched up' afterwards. It's worth experimenting - small projects like bookmarks are ideal for this - and you will soon get an idea for which sorts of thicknesses create which effects. Good luck and happy weaving!

If you’re using a ball of wool, how do you set it up so that you use the whole ball without cutting the wool? I want to be able to weave the whole ball of wool without cutting it.

With weaving, I'm afraid you're limited by how much yarn you can fit on your shuttle. Although it's possible to wind a whole ball (I'm assuming 50g or more) onto a shuttle, it would probably make the shuttle very thick and unwieldy to weave with. If the ball of yarn is small enough though, you can wind all of it onto a shuttle or even pass it through the warp threads manually. You could try winding half a ball onto the shuttle and carrying the other half up the rows as you go, then weaving with that half once you've run out of the first half, but it will still result in one extra end to weave in halfway along your woven piece. You can also try to roughly measure out how much yarn you'll need, but it's tricky to get it exactly right and not end up needing to cut any yarn. Good luck!
