This is so therapeutic, I love doing things with hands, almost near retirement, I,ve spend last 28 yrs sitting in front of a box called computer, not healthy on mind and spirit...building things with hands is so satisfying, some of us are hardwired in diff way. ( the editing is done very nicely) next let’s build me a sailboat.

I couldn’t agree with you more. I spent two years sitting at a computer after several years of welding/manufacturing and thought it was great for about 6 months then started to hate it more and more. Took a $5 pay cut and went to work in a custom cabinet shop and it was the best decision I had made in a while. How big you wanting that sailboat?

Hi, beautiful work. However, when you put video fast speed was hard to see how you weaved the laterals. I noticed you used the string double, but not sure if you attached underneath or how. Can you show the bench upside-down, sometimes this image is helpful. Also, what is the name of the material of the cord? thanks. Beautiful bench.

I'm concerned that one dislodged nail would result in the unraveling of the entire weave. In addition, there is the theoretical risk that having tension in only one direction could result in the cross members (or side members) "rolling," but I think that's less likely. Splices or not, going over/under, both top and bottom, seems to be more secure. I've woven many seats with sisal, jute, and cane and have yet to have a splice give way. Nonetheless, this is a beautiful bench.
@lifeinsidethebox9232
@lifeinsidethebox9232 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for weighing in Mark. Once the cord is looped over a nail, you can then rely on the shear strength of the nail. The nails are all hammered to depth and bent in place to offer more strength. As for the rolling issue, there is a lot of tension in either direction, but the joinery used in the construction of the bench is more than strong enough to counter this. Seems to me that going over/under would create double the tension both on the top and underneath the seat. It also doubles the amount of cord needed to complete the seat. Interesting thoughts! Thanks!
@calysagora3615
@calysagora3615 5 жыл бұрын
Traditionally it would have been a huge waste of something so precious as nails. Nails used to be individually handmade by blacksmiths, and was way more resource and time intensive than making another feet of cord, which probably still applies in many parts of the world where having to buy anything would defeat the gain in time. Personally I cringe at the idea of using nails, clamps or screws in furniture at all, but that's just me.

these are beautiful. I wish my parents would of kept the ones my great grandmother had left here after her passing. Instead they either threw them away cause of a loose thread. (which i offered to re-wrap) or cause someone said they looked cool and handed it off to them. Only to replace them with dollar store equivalent computer chairs and plastic ones. Cause as they said "their so much nicer". I wish i didn't have my medical issues so i could have my own place. I would love to make all the furniture for my home. So i could say i made all the chairs and tables and what not in my house.
