"Do a gig economy thing." ...I now want to run a campaign where the PCs are gig workers for various supernatural entities. (That actually reminds me of a joke campaign concept I once saw, which is that there's a spell called "Summon Adventurer", and the PCs are said adventurers. They work mechanically like summoned creatures and can't permanently die, but every adventure is someone summoning them and demanding they do something. Sometimes it's epic, sometimes it's "please save my village" and sometimes it's REALLY, really petty. "Set off that trap for me, please.")
@Bluecho43 жыл бұрын
The idea of a DnD world with a modern tech level, where adventurers get pinged on their smart phones to go handle monster problems, really tickles my fancy. Like an Uber driver, except instead of a car, you run around with a sword. But the bit about adventurers being summoned to deal with other people's problems reminds me of Magic: The Gathering. I had an idea for a DnD game set in the MtG universe, where the PCs are summoned by mages to solve problems or clear out dungeons. (Technically, in MtG, summoning works by creating a magical copy of a creature the mage has seen before; the original character doesn't go anywhere, and has no agency. But presumably this campaign would give the PCs some measure of leeway when it comes to achieving the goals they're given.) Come to think of it, another way to use this idea would be a Dark Souls campaign. They have summon signs, that people put down so others can summon them to fight. Or else enter covenants to have them summoned automatically when needed. This, I think, would work really well, as it would be something the characters do _in addition to_ their normal adventuring, and as an opt-in mechanic.

One of my favorite things to hand out besides magic items is feats that normally go unpicked. As a reward, you're given the Brooch of Life. It has three golden leaves inlaid with a bright emerald in the center of each one. At the base is a single thorn of a dull red color. The giver tells you it will revive the wearer 3 times in death, but must not be used any more after that. [after each use, the green stones grow dim one-by-one. After all 3 uses, the red thorn grows brighter. If used again, the PC is revived, but is not themselves, instead becoming the new NPC BBEG Lich with all the skills, gear, and knowlege they had before]

My new system for monetary rewards is to replace them with what I call 'Items of Value'. These are heavily inspired by Oddities from Numenera. Some sort of easily carried trinket that would have significant value but be difficult to break up, or lose value if you did. A bar of gold; a magic music box; a rare comic book; a piece of jewelry, etc. These get used whenever you need to barter for something significant. For most adventuring expenses - meals, rooms, clothes, repairing equipment, resupplying, etc. - we just handwave and abstract, "This is roughly how wealthy you all are." But if a character wants something important - specialty equipment; bribing an official; giving a gift to ingratiate yourself with the prince; etc. - they need to use an Item of Value.

I used non-loot rewards in my first campaign. One player ended up as Champion of the Raven Queen so I granted them something akin to the raven queen warlock pact feature. Something I'm trying in my new campaign: I really like making maps, so as rewards on top of loot, my players are gonna get maps. Maps inside tombs of ancient orders to show locations of other tombs of the same order. Maps of the path of conquest of the founder of the long ago fallen empire. Maps of mineral locations, maps of animal migration patterns. Then later the warlock's patron can tell her she needs to go to the other tombs. The druid can find the leylines of natural power that the animals follow and the minerals form around. Maps that the players have to synthesize in order to get more stuff.

One satisfying way that worked for me that you wouldn't think works was just property. And not just random, far away land but a high value piece of property on the busiest city on the planet, right on the merchant's district so very highly sought after. The party didn't plan on settling down at all or anything like that but were immediately happy to plan an Adventurer's Guild and being situated in one of the major hubs for adventuring efforts was enough motivation to embark on a very long, multi-planar rescue mission for a rich merchant.

I've been running some character focused adventures recently, where each character in the party I DM for gets the chance to come up with something which relates to their character. The the ex-mercenary fighter decided he wanted and adventure which focused on tracking down his old mercenary buddies, for example. And in each of these adventures I give the option to learn a feat as a reward. Granted it makes my player characters a bit more powerful, but that's fine as we play quite casually anyway. The feat they pick relates to the game they are playing; maybe the fighter in the above example gains combat expertise by the end of it, as he learns from his past and remembers the techniques he used to use in battle long before he retired. Personally it's really working well in my game and is getting my players super excited about their chance for an adventure, coming up with really interesting ideas to grow their characters both thematically but also mechanically.

My go to abstract rewards are the 4 optional ability scores in the DMG. Sanity, Honor, Renown, and Piety. You killed a mind flayer and no one got their mind flayed. Everyone roll a d4 and add that number to your sanity. That last job for the local nobility raised your renown 5 points. 2 more points and you get your pick of a rural keep or a wizard's tower. You've got more than 30 Piety. You now outrank the Pope and are in charge of church based mission assignments for all clergy between levels 5 and 15.

During a game I ran back in 3.5, one of my players had a dwarf cleric who worshipped Kelemvor. He was very focused on making sure that only those who should die, did. He spend much time and resources healing and trying to save any Innocents caught in the fireball slinging crossfire. Towards the end of the campaign, he tried to save a child who was crushed by a collapsed building (our Goliath fighter got thrown through it) and prayed to Kelemvor, offering his own life to save the child. Well, I decided that Kelemvor was so impressed by his dedication, He elevated the dwarf to be his Chosen and the ability to permanently sacrifice some of his CON to perform a True Resurrection. He did. The dwarf player could only do so a few times, but boy did he make them count.

I imagine the 2 concentrations ability would something to do with Beholders - either making a deal with one, or gathering some part of one for a potion. Mainly because they are a creature with two separate minds within them, that sometimes get along but are just as prone to being paranoid about each-other as with any other creature outside itself. Perhaps there's something they can teach the caster on splitting their mind like the beholder's to concentrate on different things with each half; or the beholder's dreams affects their reality.

Regarding excessive resting: Remember that you can only gain the benefit of a long rest once per 24 hours. In addition to that, use random encounters, and/or narrative timers. If there are hostages that need to be rescued, rituals to be stopped, forced that are mustering, etc., then you can motivate your players to get off their bums and keep moving. Random encounters shine in a press-your-luck, mega-dungeon kinda style of game where we're just here to get loot or whatever.

You could have an interesting element to land ownership between monarchs. What if there are powerful spirits at certain locations, and if they can be bound a person can use powerful magic to subjugate a spirit and gain a boon from it. So monarchs have webs of these powerful spirits bound giving them immense magical power from these bindings. Then they’d be able to grant these powers and boons to people who serve them which they also do with the guardians they place at these places. Feat based on events (either on milestone when xp leveling or when double the xp range within same milestone with a miniboss, which yes returns the xp tracking but only on you as the DM which you might already be doing as part of encounter/cr prep) 2. Faith and/or Patron progression (patron in this sense being their legal patrons aka the house of the player with noble background, wizard teacher, etc) with MOT and COS being influence on how to go about it for 5e (tho really for the main/only long running campaign im running it really is mostly 3.5 sourced stuff) 3. Reputation and Fame (might seem not different from the patron bit, but i see it as the distinction between what you can get away with vs what people willingly let you do) 4. Benefitial rival or ally events (this would fall under the proficiency/custom spells/weapons bits, be it them searching for a thing, stumbling into it or simply their favorite mech pal establishing a new connection and options that the party gets for their crafting price instead of what they sell it to others) 5. The full homebrew line bit of "ported in 2e kits and 3.5 prestige classes as 5 level 5e classes" OR pseudo gestalt effect (this one naturally goes up in value as party keeps getting higher level and the gestalt bit would be only 1-3 levels worth based on what force can bestow it or if its some effect tied to a legacy/tied to a power growing item)

One idea I've wanted to run with is to expand the Research rules from Xanathar's Guide. First by making it possible to use it for things like learning spells or magic item recipes; there's no reason a wizard shouldn't be able to sit in a tower and derive a spell from first principles, or for a blacksmith to lock themselves in a workshop until they've learned how to beat magic into a sword. And second by allowing a person to use books - and the gold piece value thereof - to contribute towards the cost of Research. Because if you've got the books, it's only reasonable for you to check the knowledge you already have, before dropping gold on new books or access to libraries or scholar's fees. It would also turn books into treasure, and indeed be worth more than their value in gold (because you can sell it for coin, or keep it as an asset that can get repeated value). It would give PCs a reason to create their own libraries (and invest in defenses to protect them). If they're going to do a lot of Research - of a mundane or magical variety - it's an investment in their future. I'd probably establish a PC's library as having a "Library Value", which is equal to roughly a tenth of the gold piece value of all the books therein. The Library Value dictates how much gold piece of "cost" can be covered to tackle one Research problem. Once used, it can't be used again for that question (because you've read that many gold pieces worth of books already). It set the Library Value as 10% of the total book cost, because books can have any number of subjects, only some of which are liable to be relevant to any given problem. You won't the True Name of a Greater Demon in your stacks of books on botany, for instance. Nor the secrets of an improved Fireball spell or how to forge a Holy Avenger in books of poetry or the history of regional trade agreements.

3.5 had some good rules for making new spells, as discussed in this link. rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/3515/rules-for-creating-new-spells While it will need some tweaks to fit 5e's mechanics and to fit your idea of how to research magic, it's worth a read. For crafting magic items, I'd recommend looking up how the 3.5 artificer's Item Creation feature worked, it seems to be similar to your idea of the blacksmith beating magic into a sword.

Really good topic for a video and one that absolutely warrants a rethinking by both DMs and players I think. When you mentioned about the PC's wearing the clothes and the adornments of their positions in society in-game - it reminded me of the Monty Python and the Holy Grail scene where one of the "peasants" says (roughly paraphrased) along the lines of "I could tell he was a king (or important or something) b/c he ain't covered in shit" hehe So its sort of the same thing - the PC's have their special armor and weapons and so on that delineates them as being important figures and/or people not to be trifled with. You also mentioned large amounts of gold destabilizing economies - the party could hit an old dragon and come out looting the horde for 50,000 gold. Then the party shows up in a town that's used to bartering chickens and sheep and you could end up with some bad scenarios. If the party is lucky and the townspeople are good they may just say "look, we don't even have anything that costs 5 gold to sell, nevermind 50,000. Or if they're unlucky they could end up in a town where the townspeople look at the party and say "man, we could rebuild our temple and dig a new well for the town" and etc improvements. and then the party could wake up the next morning in the inn to find the entire town standing outside the door to the inn saying that "if you want to walk out of here under your own power there's a toll to leave this town - and it's 30,000 gold. And if you don't pay it voluntarily then we're taking the lot and maybe we'll let you live.." So, agreed that massive amounts of gold can really cause more problems than they are worth for parties sometimes (or at least if you're being somewhat realistic then it should). But that's something else to think about and another reason why parties might turn down payments in currency in favor of other things like land and titles etc once they've gone through the kind of experience with a town like I referred to above.

Easy way to make Monetary Rewards more fun: Get actual currency no longer in circulation, and designate Gold, Silver and Copper pieces. Players love to get Stuff, and this is plenty of Stuff to give, and its a hell lot more appretiated than Notes on a Sheet. Oh, and use the Silver Standard, aka 100 Copper is 1 Silver, 100 silver is 1 gold. 1 silver in game is the same as 1 gold piece in the book. That makes Gold realy stand out, and it makes purchasing Feel more realistic since your not dealing with the highest currency all the time, without Actually changing anything.

I was actually having troubles with one of my players in my curse of strahd campaign, they are a sorcerer right now and really don't like the class because they feel very weak and fragile and they want to be a cleric. Unfortunately it doesn't make sense right now for her to retire her character so I was looking into multi-class, we are thinking paladin but I didn't really have a good way and justifying her gaining all these holy powers in the campaign. I think you guys just gave me some inspiration though.

Pathfinder 2E has feats and archetypes as rewards for certain plots in modules. Help a ranger? Learn to stalk enemies in combat. Encounter ooze cultists? Wanna become an ooze?
@AGrumpyPanda3 жыл бұрын
1E also had that in adventure paths and modules, including unique things specifically for those (e.g. if you wanted to have an Axe Beak as an animal companion in organised play, you had to earn it by completing one specific adventure).

I have a very... mean way of dealing with the fifteen minute adventuring day. Don't relieve the pressure, you gotta keep going. This can be a timer, right? Could be terrible dreams. Whatever makes thematic sense for your bad guy's evilness. The pressure cooker is a great way to do it. But, expect some freaking out from your players, and if it is used too much, your players will see you as extremely adversarial. Keep it fresh, keep it fair, but never take your hand off the cooker until the meal is done. In my recent campaign, my players were underwater and were running out of air. If they rested, they risked running using up more air. They were very liberal with the first few sessions, until it started to come down to the wire and they got the Poisoned condition, and suddenly the fifteen minute adventuring day turning into a three or four session long adventuring day. Whew they were haggard by the end of it. They made it out barely, and they immediately had a huge sigh of relief when they were done, I felt it through the computer screen. Thank goodness, the pressure cooker is off. Now we can breathe.

DM: "Congratulations, you're now the mayor." Player: "I didn't run for office." DM: "It was a write in campaign." Player: "Okay. What does that mean?" DM: "It means you now have protect the town from everything." Player: "That sucks." DM: "You also get advantage on all Persuasion and Intimidation rolls." Player: 🤔

Fantastic advice as always! However, I do have a question. While most of these rewards can be given easily, I'm not too sure how to go about giving players feats/proficiencies. Like, how would I inform the player that they can learn some cool new abilities if they go talk to a secretive group of monks, or there's a famous wizard who can teach them a new spell, etc? Would the knowledge of the existence of these opportunities be rewards in and of themselves? Do I just tell them out of game? Do I have someone in universe happen to mention this while they are near the players (rumours)?
@WebDM3 жыл бұрын
Any of those possibilities work! It depends on the game. Telling them out of character is probably a nice motivator, but finding a way to do it in character is also effective if you tend to do everything full immersion.

Simplest way I can think of is to have an npc show up and do something that they shouldn't be capable of, like a rogue suddenly divine smiting an enemy, and then have the npc mention spending a couple of weeks learning it from a paladin etc, to get the players questioning if they can learn things that way.
@williamozier9183 жыл бұрын
You could tie the rewards into a backstory where you character is adventuring as part of an Agogee like, or walk about like, coming of age ceremony. Now leave, and do not return until you have reached 2nd level.

NPC: Congratulations for cleaning out The Hill and re-opening commerce in the land. In reward I am making you the Sheriff at the Keep on the Borderlands! Now...here is a sealed letter stating this...um, the Sheriff nor anyone at the Keep knows about this decision...so, show them the letter, and I'm sure they'll hand the Sheriff right over to you no muss no fuss. To be clear, I have not played since 3.5. I have been thinking about getting back into the world but every video I watch is about how to make combat fun & money does not matter. What happened to players who actually want to build their own keep or kingdom? Becoming the greatest corporeal being possible which makes Tiamat tremble when they are unhappy? Has the world changed so much in the last 15 years in D&D? My Rogue/Shadow Dancer/Planar Champion had a city that used Bags of Devouring for the sewer system (I thought it was creative lol), magically artificers, etc. and had weapons in their Bag of Holding that when drawn immediately drew the attention of Gods by the end of the our campaign; is there anything like this in D&D still?

The issue with political rewards: once In a pathfinder game I took the Noble scion feat among other feats that made me a noble man. >~> later on everyone got equal titles. Like my investment didn’t return anything special.

14:45 Medieval medals were not like the modern kind though. At most they were worn in a chain around your neck, and you could proabably not wear more than one. Most of them were likely more like the golden tablets given to Marco Polo, things you kept in your bags that said that you were favored by a certain ruler and to what extent and what services should be rendered unto you.

In my campaign my players are not allowed to multiclass, though they have been given moments to change class or subclass if they didn't like how things were going since this was new. But, to help them also customize their characters I created a list of accepted feats (most feats that don't add stat increases) and over the course of level 1-11 I periodically allowed them to learn a feat as their god spoke to them and was pleased with their progress. "Knowledge is its own reward" she said.
