Adhesive dentistry has fundamentally altered the dental profession towards minimally invasive and more aesthetic dental restorations ; Not only because the restorations itself are performing well, but mostly because more dental tissues can be preserved. In this webinar, composed out of clinical studies and cases from the bioemulation group, cementation options for dental veneers are critically reviewed and discussed, together with some clinical cases. Are bonded indirect restorations safe? In the literature, a lot of info can be found on the clinical and laboratory evaluation of laminate veneers. It was shown that for most studies that lasted for 5 to 20 years, the success rate was very high. Nevertheless, the success and longevity of this treatment option is highly linked to the way veneers are cemented, what is called the operator factor. Hence, it is important to learn how to cement ceramic veneers safely. The quality of the bonding is determined by several factors. On the tooth side, enamel should be preserved as much as possible and immediate dentin sealing should be applied when dentin is exposed. On the side of ceramic veneers, the etching time recommended by the manufacturer should be respected. A layer of silane and subsequently a thin layer of unfilled resin improve the bonding and strengthen the dental ceramic. Registration of tooth colour is important. The same colour of cement should be used for all substrate; the dental technician should know how and what needs to be covered. Hydrophobic resin-based cements should be used to cement veneers. Self-adhesive composite resins are more hydrophilic and prone to discoloration. Regular dentin shades in the same colour as the substrate are usually most suitable. Light-cured composite or regular restorative composites are to be preferred over dual-cured cements. Dr. Gerdolle prefers to use viscous composites because the placement and excess removal can be controlled quite well. When the thickness of the luting cement is increasing, the properties will play a more important role. So it is important to choose a dental restorative with high mechanical properties, such as G-aenial Anterior. Finally, he reveals some clinical tips and tricks to safely cement your ceramic veneers with the highest attention for details and aesthetic perfection.
