The moderation of user-generated content on online platforms is key to protecting people online. But it is also a perpetual challenge - as the question of what the "right" guidelines are depends on the online community that they aim to govern. This is particularly important for autistic people, as research shows that they can particularly benefit from online communities - but are also more likely to be the target of online abuse.
In the context of AutSPACEs - an online citizen science project around sensory processing - they have explored how the co-creation of such content moderation guidelines together with its users can help address some of these issues. In particular, the close collaboration with the community allowed them to uncover community-specific moderation dilemmas around participant safety and wellbeing and make informed trade-offs in the moderation design.
This webinar is intended for anyone interested in content moderation, including autistic and non-autistic people, those working or living with autistic people, and researchers working with autistic communities online.
Bastian Greshake Tzovaras and Georgia Aitkenhead are two researchers at The Alan Turing Institute. They both have a long history of working on participatory citizen science projects and implementing online platforms and are passionate about accessibility & inclusion in research.
Susanna Fantoni is a disability advocate and blogger. James Scott is a Senior Policy Advisor at the Centre for Data Ethics & Innovation. Together the two are acting as the citizen co-leads for the moderation approach of AutSPACEs.
