In the case of Ransomeware, isn't it deleting the original file and creating a new encrypted, file? Could that create an issue with Snapshot storage (because every file has been deleted) making the Snapshot useless for recovering from the ransomeware?

What if your back up drive with the snapshots on them is connected via usb to the NAS that gets infected. Wont it infect the snapshots also?

Because QNAP snapshots are stored out of the volume in most cases they shouldn't be infected, but additional backups is always recommended. In regard to the situation you're bringing up, the external drive data could still be accessed by the NAS and potentially be infected, so if you want to take extra precaution you can consider only connecting the external drive during the backup, and then eject and disconnect the drive.

yeah so with that, how do you create the snapshot 'off volume'. So in-case the main NAS is stolen, blows up or gets hit by RW.
