Webinar: Recognising pain in our ridden horses and the impact of rider weight

Dr Sue Dyson talked to us about how to recognise pain in ridden horses. Sue shared with us some of her research that has looked at signs and behaviours horses display when they are experiencing pain, many of which can be very subtle.
She also discussed the sensitive issue of the impact of rider size on equine performance. Sue explains the influence that riders can have on their horses and what we, as owners, can do to ensure we are able to assess and recognise signs of discomfort and pain as soon as possible.
Sue was joined by our Deputy Chief Executive and Director of UK Tony Tyler, who has worked alongside Sue on various projects, for the Q&A session.

I think the American riders would take they’re weight and the heavy tack etc into consideration,I was watching a video of a horse rescue in USA and I was totally disgusted in the amount of lge woman that was adopting horses to go trail riding and in my eyes they never have been allowed to adopt or ride the two equines they had adopted,when the woman mounted you saw the poor horses legs struggling and I’m sure that’s when they turned off the camera 🎥,I’m so glad that a British rescue has taken the weight issues into this

In my life time of 50 years teaching riding I have observed 70 percent of my pupils do not recognise pain in their horses and believe their horses are purposely just exhibiting naughty behaviour!

Yes, my sister was on a ride with a woman whose horse was affected by the heat. Other riders said it was in trouble, but the owner insisted the horse was just being stubborn. When they came to a stream, the horse collapsed into the water, and other riders dismounted to hold its head out of the water and keep it from drowning. I hope the owner learned to recognize heat stress.

Yes. It's obvious if you're connected with the horse & horse's mind. It's simply seen & felt. One can sense discomfort in the horse. Many signs. Albeit some signs are seemingly quite subtle. They are truly blatantly obvious.

It's kind of hard to tell, but it looks like the test riders are all in dressage saddles. I wonder if there have been any comparison studies on jumping and Western saddles as well?

I’ve only just seen this. I don’t think the “ tourist holiday riding experience “ outfits are controlled as to plonking obese riders on clearly unsuitable horses, as their animal welfare comes a poor second to profit.

I will not respond to anyone,.. but it is a disgrace to see obese riders on horses! Anyone in the horse world knows it's the 20% rule... a horse can only hold 20% of its weight,.. including tack!!! Where is the law that protects these voiceless defenseless creatures!!!!!!
