I speak Italian, and I can tell you that the way ChatGPT pronounced "cane" (i.e. "cain") is COMPLETELY WRONG!!! It's supposed to be "Ka (as in CAliber) Ne (as is NEpotism)! Also, ChatGPT pronounced "casa" with a hard "s", like you would say it in Spanish, but in Italian the correct way of saying this word is "caZa". So I wouldn't trust this app as far as pronunciation goes.

Yeah, its Italian pronunciation wasn't good publicity. In my experience, Chat GPT can manage a language at a time; in other words, you can ask it to speak a whole answer in English, but if you want to get Italian pronunciation, you need to ask a new question, like "talk me about the weather in Italian". When the chat tries to switch language in the middle of a response, it kind of gets stuck in the main language of the answer.

I think that was a coding error. GPT was in English mode, so it pronounced the words in English the whole time. If it speaks in Italian (completely), it pronounces the words correctly.

Another tip is: at the begging of your prompt ask them to speak and pronounce the words of the language you are trying to learn as a native would. If you don’t say that and they are speaking English to you mixed with, let’s say, Spanish, the AI will almost always pronounce words wrong. Kind of how an English speaker would pronounce a word they didn’t know in another language. I’d also recommend making your own GPT and “program” the AI to be a professor or teacher that is fluent and a professional speaker in whatever language you’re learning. Ask it to use the internet to understand the culture and local way of speaking to further enhance it. This way from the start it has the foundation needed to speak and teach correctly. Cheers!

In the part "vocabulary quiz" CANE (dog) in Italian is NOT pronounced as cane in English (the way ChatGPT pronounces it). How are you supposed to learn a language if the pronounciation used is wrong? Cane in Italian is pronounced with an open [a] [kane] not with the diphtong [kein] and no final [e]

I'm sorry to tell you this, but kane isn't an Italian word. The letter K doesn't exist in an Italian dictionary. Cane is the correct spelling. It also got wrong the pronunciation. Italians phonetic is easy, we read as we write.😅

I'm no expert in Italian, but that word it gave you for dog sure does not sound right to me, ChatGPT makes it sound like "kain" which sounds totally wrong, Italian should be "KAH-neh.", with the accent on the first syllable. I'm assuming that because this video is old, it has probably been corrected by now.

This is a great multi-dimensional tool. I now use ChatGPT in different languages all the time. But it doesn't create short cuts in language learning because there are none. You still need to put in a lot of time over years for each new language. If anybody tells you differently they are just "talking their book", i.e., trying to get you to buy something!

I started using this last week. I'm at B1 in Spanish, and I live in Spain, but my reading, writing, and comprehension is ahead of my speaking. All the information is in my brain, but I often just get a brain freeze in the middle of conversation. This for me is where cgpt comes in, to just practice speaking without the pressure of real world scenarios. Also, when set to Castillian voice and dialect the AI does a pretty decent job. I would definitely recommend it for speaking practice. Plus you obviously get the reading and comprehension practice while you're doing it.

I just ask ChatGPT for some Irish exercises at A1.2. It made a complete beginner mistake. Its reply when I pointed it out: “I appreciate your attention to detail. Apologies for the oversight. You are correct; it should be "go dtí an chóisir" since "cóisir" is a feminine noun. Here's the corrected sentence: "An bhfuil tú ag teacht go dtí an chóisir?" Thank you for catching that mistake. If you have any more questions or if there's anything else I can assist you with, feel free to let me know!” 😂 The student teaching the teacher… Not exactly what I need. I hope that more common languages don’t have such errors. So just like Google Translate: In order to make best use of it, you need to be fluent or at a very high level to be able to properly evaluate its quality.

I think this was due to the fact that it was speaking in English with an "English voice" at the time. It also mispronounced the Spanish word llamas in one of his examples, but it was speaking in English and included the Spanish word. This was also the case when it was quizing on Italian Vocab (if I recall correctly) so that was probably the problem. When I use it I mostly do crosstalk (I speak in English and have it to always respond in Spanish) and I haven't had any problem like that.

Regarding some comments here, that ChatGPT speaks with an American accent, etc. My original language is Polish. I speak with ChatGPT using Polish or English. When ChatGPT explains something in English and adds some Polish words or phrases, the accent is American. But when I talk with ChatGPT only in Polish, its accent is better Polish than most of the Polish people that I know. Start a conversation with something like this: "Can we speak in Polish, German, Italian, etc.?" and speak only in this language. Maybe this will help.

The CHAT GPD shown here is a very bad teacher of Italian. If you use it, you will end up learning a very bad pronunciation and spelling in Italian. It is a kind of Italian with an English accent which changes completely the beautiful musicality of the Italian language. The word 'pá' from "eh pá!" actually comes form the Portuguese word for boy (rapaz). So it is like saying 'oh boy' to a degree too, even when spoken to a female 🙃It isn't used as a filler but as vocative. Somebody spills a drink "Eh pá!" You loose your wallet; "Eh pá, perdi a carteira!"

I did notice some errors though, in the Italian vocab quiz ChatGPT says cane = dog which is correct but ChatGPT pronounces it like sugarcane ('keɪn) when is should be pronounced kanegh (kane). ChatGPT does a decent job with Spanish. I once tried to use German with ChatGPT and gave up. It was useless. It spoke a German that was grammatically alright but with English pronunciation. For example, it pronounced the article "die" as the English word "die" (to die). Pretty much like it pronounces "cane" in this video, which doesn't sound Italian at all. I tried a few Slavik languages and it didn't go well either. And remember that ChatGPT is still learning and can make mistakes. On several occasions, it gave me completely false information.

The italian vocab quiz revealed how Chat GPT's voice engine isn't ready yet. The pronounciation for "dog" and "book" were wrong. Google translate **does** get the pronounciation right. Any ideas when Chat GPT will offer voice engines in native tongues?

thanks for your tips. However the AI pronounced almost all of the words in italian incorrectly. a don, which is written "cane" is not pronounced "kein", it is pronounced "kane". as it is written, and other words too were prononced english way. We need to be aware of these issues

Wow-this is amazing ! I do have to say, as a fluent Italian speaker, it fucked that up royally, not just pronouncing it with an American accent, but completely wrong-to the point that no Italian is going to understand you if you say ‘cane’ like sugarcane instead of of the correct pronunciation of kah-nay for dog-also ‘casa’ in pronounced very different in Italian than Spanish, which the app got wrong. Same for Spanish with the letter ‘ll ‘-you might be understood saying ‘lamas’ instead of ‘llamas’, but it’s as wrong as you can get. Still an amazing tool, I guess you just have to have a basic knowledge of the target language. Can you correct GPT’s pronunciation so that she doesn’t keep making the same egregious mistakes?

Of course you won't recognise the word "cane" when it says [kʰẽːn] instead of [kaːne]. It would be more useful if you asked it how you start with phrases like "how do you say" "I don't know", etc, then set the TTS to Italian, then keep asking it. You could still ask back in English, you would just hear it answer with an Italian pronunciation, but that wouldn't be actively hindering you in learning Italian.

First I was very excited by these tips but once I heard Ms ChatGPT say Cómo te lamas and cane (as in Patrick Kane), ummm.... if it messes up beginner-level words in very well known European languages, what can I expect when using it with lesser-known languages?

That's pretty interesting, but I think that the pronunciation of words still pretty bad... both Italian and Spanish words have been pronounced wrong, that much I, myself, as an Italian native speaker I couldn't even understand the words (such as, for example, the word "cane" for dog 😅). I hope they will improve this aspect of ChatGPT soon, too, but for now... I don't think is reliable on this matter.

the word "dog" in italian is wrong. You dont say "caine", but Cane". Also "house" is CASA, not the word chat gpt informed, which I don't even remember because of its weirdness.
