I use it a lot for learning French. I "taught" it to always respond to me in two parts: First as a teacher, and correct and explain any mistakes I may have made in my comment; and then as a friend, and just carry on the conversation as one usually would. Highly recommended.

wow, so interesting! how did you teach it to reply in those to parts?
@pedterson
@pedterson Жыл бұрын
@@language.fit.german It's really wonderful to work with. Here's a prompt that should work: "I'd like you to play a game with me to help me to learn French. We'll have a conversation in French and you respond to each of my comments in two parts. Part 1: You respond as a French teacher and point out and correct any grammatical and orthographic mistakes I've made in my previous comment. You don't only correct the mistakes, but you also explain why they are mistakes and what I should keep in mind to avoid them in the future. Part 2: You respond as a friend and just carry on the conversation as one normally would. I will remind you of this format, by adding "teacher|friend" at the end of each of my comments. On y va? teacher|friend" The reminder is necessary, because without it ChatGPT tends to forget what it's supposed to do after 3 responses or so. You can adjust it to your needs by turning the "friend" into a scholar or a interviewer for a job or anything else you'd like to practice. I find that it's a really effective and fun way of learning.

ChatGPT really seems great for language learning, but there's always that chance it feeds you something awkward/false, which seems to happen more in any language other than english. Overall it seems to get it right most of the time though, I'll definitely keep using it. I think most of the mistakes that it gives you will be straightened out by more input. Cheers!

I've been having fun asking ChatGPT to write short stories for me in Japanese, list the most important words with translations in English, and explain the most important grammar. I ask it to put the furigana in parentheses after kanji. It's pretty good and does some cute and funny stories. It does make mistakes, e.g. puts ご as the furigana for 後 in 晩御飯の後, but Duolingo makes that kind of mistake too, lol. It's cool chatting with ChatGPT in different languages too, and telling it to be a person in a particular scenario so that you can practice having conversations such as checking into a hotel, applying for a job, etc. I tried playing chess with ChatGPT too but it's not quite there yet, lol :)

GPT4 has improved a lot with Asian languages especially, from my observation, although I'm only fluent in Japanese. But it's motivated me to learn Chinese more seriously now, since I can generate sentences for the hanzi I'm learning or use it for random reading practice. It makes learning very exciting again. The funnest thing I've tried is asking it to roleplay and act like certain characters or for various situations. It scared the crap out of me for how human it felt in Japanese with some of the characters in GPT4 version, compared to chatGPT, it's crazy how much it improved. Can't imagine what a GPT5 would be like...

Do you think chatgpt 3.5 is enough for studying English?
@phen-themoogle7651
@phen-themoogle7651 10 ай бұрын
@@vanvonguyen4272 Yes, definitely. I'm a native English speaker and chatgpt 3.5 is better than me at English and a fabulous teacher. I just asked it "show me a bunch of common idioms" and then it came up with 20 , and although it repeated 2-3 of them (GPT4 is mainly better at not repeating the same information I think) I knew all of the idioms so it does understand what's common. Here are the ones it showed me: "Certainly! Here are some common English idioms along with their meanings: Break a leg: This means good luck or wishing someone success, especially before a performance or an important event. Bite the bullet: To face a difficult or unpleasant situation with courage and determination. Hit the nail on the head: To describe or identify something exactly right or to be accurate. Piece of cake: Something that is very easy to do or accomplish. Cost an arm and a leg: Refers to something that is extremely expensive. Beat around the bush: Avoiding the main topic or not getting to the point in a conversation. Once in a blue moon: Something that happens very rarely or infrequently. Break the ice: To start a conversation in a social or awkward situation to relieve tension. Don't cry over spilled milk: It means not to dwell on past mistakes or things that cannot be changed. Under the weather: Feeling slightly ill or not in the best health. A piece of cake: Referring to a task or job that is very easy to do. It's raining cats and dogs: It's raining heavily. Cost an arm and a leg: Something that is very expensive. Burning the midnight oil: Working late into the night or early morning hours. A penny for your thoughts: Asking someone what they are thinking or what's on their mind. Actions speak louder than words: What someone does is more important than what they say. Don't put all your eggs in one basket: Don't risk everything on a single venture; diversify. Pull someone's leg: To tease or joke with someone in a playful manner. The ball is in your court: It's your turn to take action or make a decision. Jumping on the bandwagon: Joining a popular trend or activity. These idioms can add depth and color to your English conversations, but it's important to understand their meanings and when to use them appropriately. If you have any questions about how to use specific idioms or need more examples, feel free to ask!"

I've used it a few times and there's also specific ways you can even get it to expand past the standard languages i.e. it can tell you dialect words. Also, when I asked it to write Chiang Mai in Lanna (an ancient language there) as it was a language I saw when I visited when I lived in Thailand, it actually could do it. I've also learned some nice idioms from it too for Swedish

Thanks Steve! Very interesting. I've found out that asking for authentic historical content for a certain level is very useful. For example, i I have asked ChatGPT to "tell me the biography of Fyodor Dostoyevsky in Russian using A2 vocabulary in 300 words". I find it's more interesting than asking it to write a random story. I have also asked it to simplify a Wikipedia article and it works pretty well. Even if it has mistakes, it is way better than using speech to text transcription for a video or podcast in my opinion.

One more way I like to use ChatGPT is by incorporating it into my vocabulary review. I collect a list of words and then ask ChatGPT to generate a text using those words (e.g., "Please generate a text using these words: word1, word2, etc."). Once I have the generated text, I import it and "learn" from it whenever I want. I find this process helps me memorize the words more effectively compared to just reviewing them on their own. I write down the reviewed words twice: first on paper and then in the ChatGPT chat. Additionally, reading the text generated by ChatGPT further enhances my ability to memorize the words. PS: This text corrected by ChatGPT )) My English is not good enough yet to write such a good text )))

It's great to see that you now have subtitles in Tagalog, and I'm glad that the grammar is somewhat accurate. Perhaps I think you used ChatGPT to translate the subtitles into Tagalog. I have also tried using ChatGPT to translate texts from other languages to Tagalog, and while it produces translations with few errors, it still requires human intervention for proofreading the translated texts.

Another thing you can do is ask it to create a dialogue or story with a list of words or phrases you're studying if you have a list or theme. You can also ask it to make lists of a certain number of relevant words and then create a story or dialogue using that list related by a given theme. I'm starting to make some dialogues in Spanish with that stuff and its really interesting as a way of keeping some basic low-frequency vocabulary in your head.

I like studying individual words with it, asking for example sentences with different conjunctions. Or giving it a list of words I’m trying to learn and having it write a story using them x amount of times each. I don’t know how exactly, or if you’d even want to, but LingQ integrating chat GPT somehow would be advantageous to the app and it’s users. I’ve pasted the mini stories into GPT and had it rewrite them. It would be cool to hi-light a sentence and have an option “have GPT breakdown this sentence” or a button “have GPT generate a lesson using your level 2 words from this story.” Or click a word and an option “have gpt generate 3 more example sentences using this word.” Just some ideas! Thanks for the video!

You said at 8:30 that you would like to see a way to convert podcast material to text with timestamps, well there's sort of a way to do that IF the podcast is on youtube. For example, on this video, go to the (...) button on the bottom right of the video (to the right of the clip/save buttons). There, you can choose "show transcript". If you don't see timestamps, you can press the (⋮) button up top of the transcript and choose timestamps You can also text search this transcript You can also convert the transcript to many languages (although this is often limited depending on the source it works with, but this particular video has 20+ languages). I hope that helps.

Context in ChatGPT is important, that is why when you entered the second question it responded with Italian. So if you want to change language it is better to start a new chat. You can always return to any chat and continue in the context of the chat. I have used ChatGPT to understand the nuance between French words and their use. eg. "what is the difference between parfois and quelquefois" , searching the Internet for the nuance takes a lot of time whereas ChatGPT can give a response quickly One of the problems with ChatGPT is that there is no way to archive the chats. I have found that I can save them as MHTML files and then they are perfectly readable because MHTML files are an archive format. You may need to install an extension to your browser to be able to get this functionality. I am surprised that the Devs didn't allowing for management of the chats in some type of hierarchical tree.

I have added a plug in for chrome which allows me to speak as input, then I set various parameters to ensure a conversation like interaction. This, mostly works very well and allows me to practice as and when I like during the day and in that way remember words and expand my working vocabulary. I do find I have to remind it from time to time to keep the aswers brief and for it to interject questions for me to answer, which keeps the conversation more lively. Oh and of course it disciplines me to pronounce the words correctly as I am using the microphone as input.

The best way to improve foreign language is by thinking in that language. Then we come across all sorts of things that we find difficult to express. We can write them in a simple way, and ask ChatGPT to put it in the most common way in a given language, or even to give us a literary example from book(s) where similar idea was conveyed. It's also a great tool for advanced learners. We can write a complex sentences or even a short story, and ask it to analyse, give some suggestions, explain grammar, etc. We can write something and ask to put it in the style of XiX century novel, then say in a Shakespearian style, etc. Great fun!

I found that ChatGPT helpful for improving my French writing skills. It not only corrects my mistakes but also suggests alternative sentences, some of which I have already been able to incorporate (such as converting passive voice to active voice). I even asked ChatGPT to assess my language proficiency, which it determined to be at an intermediate level. However, when I mentioned that I didn't have a French keyboard and asked to overlook typographical errors, it upgraded my writing estimate to intermediate-advanced. I must admit that expressing myself in French (and even in English, which is not my first or second language) has been challenging, but I am gradually gaining confidence! P.S. There is a feature available for speaking and listening with ChatGPT!

I think it does the job, but there's a bit of a learning curve to figuring out what its limitations are. For example the other day I asked it to correct a text I wrote, paying special attention to word order, but while it did have some useful suggestions, it completely ignored the word order and had things like instead of "correct word" you should write "incorrect word" instead of "the exact same words" you should write "the exact same words" and some things it wore were just useless, or irrelevant. It does however work really well for conversations.

In the Italian job interview dialogue generated at 07:15, the "Potential Employer" starts out by addressing the "Job Applicant" with the respectful 3rd-person "lei" forms, but then switches to the informal 2nd-person "tu" form nearer the end, without being invited to do so. I'm not sure that this would happen in a genuine job interview!

I wonder if it would be possible for you to use the chat gpt api that just dropped to make it possible to generate stories to study right within the lingq app. I like importing into lingq, but generating text right in the app would be 😗👌

I'm using ChatGPT to learn Japanese and I'll tell you what, it is an amazing tool to learning a new language. But I do believe that one needs to know what to ask and what to demand of it. My favorite thing to ask ChatGPT when it comes up with a sentence or translate something I asked it I prompt it with: "is this how a native would say that same thing?" Or Give me the most natural way of conveying what I told you and break it down for me. Do these, forget translations and focus only on the meaning, internalize it and it's basically it.

Can Chat GPT work with a language that is academic like Sanskrit yet not widely spoken but has a incredibly huge body of prior work. I wonder if it has been trained to read any South Asian languages.

I asked ChatGPT to conjugate the word უნდა ("he wants" in Georgian). It came with an answer that was perfectly formatted and easy to understand. There was only one little problem - the conjugated Georgian words were all nonsense :) There was some logic in their conjugation as if my input verb was an infinitive form, but it was completely detached from the real language. So don't trust ChatGPT yet, especially when experimenting with rare languages. But I believe, over time they will teach it to stop making up things.

Very soon there will be multimedia GPT so you just speak in your language what you want to say and in a second it translates it and "say" it in any language. What is the point in this case learning any language?

Ask me if I have trouble falling asleep. 回答:Do you have trouble falling asleep? 翻译:你入睡困难吗? Tell me you often stay up late watching TV. 回答:I often stay up late watching TV. 翻译:我经常熬夜看电视。 这Ask me 和Tell me的回答里面要进行人称转换,这种事情它也能搞定。这ChatGPT对于处理语言方面好像无所不能,它连词典上查不到音标的单词和网络词典上查不到音标的单词都能标注音标。
