Wedding Cake Projector Mapping Display tutorial

Here we shot a video of a projector cake map display we will be using when we speak at the national Lighting Symposium on our seminar "Illuminate, Mobile Use of Event Projections"

Please note, this is a TUTORIAL... not at an actual gig. The cake is styrofoam and the display is on the middle of the dance floor... Most semi intelligent people can see this but the ignorant trolls want to try to make their point seen. The visuals are generic not visuals we create for a booked job... the computer I use isn't necessary for cake mapping but we use upwards of 6 projectors through our tower and we do a lot less cake maps and more wall or venue mapping. You can easily use a laptop as long as your processor can handle running multiple HD video files at one time. The computer is usually hidden behind a lit facade and the content we create is based off what the client is looking for. We map on an actual cake, which I thought was obvious but 1 idiot wanted to take this video as a gig log and not as something I wanted to help the community with...

I place my projector and check the coverage using the splash screen. When it's where I want it I then start mapping. Check out my FB page dedicated to mobile event projections "Illuminate Mobile Event Projections " or my instagram @djdonnielewis I have a ton of videos on there as well

hi I want to do a wedding in my backyard right.. and I imagine on my white fences to project a scenery on all 4 sides so when I walk down the isles it feels dreamy and out of this world! I want the space to feel huge, spectacular, breath taking! of course I'd be doing my wedding late afternoon sun set to almost dark out. Can you make this happen? I'm sure after this post many will be trying to copy too

How do you keep the Truss from Falling over with just one projector , let alone three ? Why Three Projectors ? So basically use a small Light weight Projector ?

I tried mapping a 1920 x 1080 video onto an 8x10 picture frame, they video was too grainy. What is your recomended size slideshow video? Using a 1080p standard throw epson l255f.

+Danny Gee Personally I love Optoma and Benq. There are a ton of options but I recumbent any 3000+ lumen, HD projector with a high contrast ratio

First of all, congratulations on your tutorial. What is this HD flon device? Is it a router? What is it used for? One more question. Do you use stuff like Benq Qcast Dongle to avoid HDMI cables? Is it the way to solve this question? Thanks in advance.

Felipe Pinaud peerless HD flow is the wireless HD transmitter and receiver we use. The problem with casting devices is the inability to extend your screen. They tend to clone your sources screen

+Javier Carvajal I actually use my own table and cake, typically, unless they pay extra for me to map the cake they supply. This allows me to have my mapping pre-set and sizing all done. I always use this truss and tubes and place the projector in the same spot which allows for easier setup and less time mapping

+Whoman Mkh I actually supply my own 4 tier square cake. It was made by a baker and mirrors a typical wedding cake. I charge an extra fee to use a venue or customer supplied cake because the time that is needed drastically changes

Stupid question but when the bride and groom go to cut the cake do you shut down your video or how do you handle that? Just got back from Mobile Beat and got excited once again about mapping.

I actually provide 2 options. the most common option is me providing a "dummy" cake which is a Styrofoam cake covered in fondant that they don't cut. they do however cut the cake supplied by the venue. the 2nd option is me projecting onto the baker supplied cake. if that's the case I turn off the projection just after the cake is cut

I have a question, how long a projection mapping can be? does it last the whole party or just a few minutes at some point of the night?

willie941 I usually keep the animations to around 5 minutes looped throughout the night. Most couples have the projections placed onto their real cakes which would drop after the cake is cut. If they choose our dummy cake option we keep it up for the entire event

Mark Benson the projector we use is a 5000 lumen full 1080 hd projector. The most important factor of any projector used for monograms or mapping, imo, is the resolution. Having a full HD projector is key

Kendall Jorgensen the biggest hurdle people have are setup ideas. This is one of our 3 setup options I wanted to share. I believe the info was valuable, especially seeing the setups so similar popping up
