I'm all in on the Blizzard pattern using the white and "linen" colored linen. She may have loved those colors for her wedding, but she may move on to different colors later on in life that she loves more. The Blizzard quilt will be timeless.

The minute you started talking about the linen quilt, it conjured up visions of waking up early on a summer day with the warmth of the sun streaming in the window and the feel of the linen quilt. It made me want to stop what I’m doing and start a linen quilt. And I do happen to have a midi a-line linen skirt that was destined for the donation pile that could be the start of it. I make yoyo quilts and have never sat a machine to quilt. That may change. I’ll add that to my list. Anyway, that would be my choice, hands down! I love your videos!!!!

Hi Cathy. I like both quilt ideas/ patterns. I like the colorful one the most. I like that the fabrics that you are considering pick up the colors of the wedding flowers and bridesmaid dresses. The bride likes those colors,she picked them for her wedding. I think that a quilt in that color scheme would be a lovely reminder of the wedding.

Love the 2 colour quilt idea with the beige linens. Each ‘flower’ could be one shirt OR each flower could be a combination of all the beiges! Yum!

I lean into the multiple colors, because that’s my own comfortable creative place. In choosing things like this, I often consider what I know about the person’s own preference for color and pattern, both in clothing and home decor if I know about that. Another color scheme that rises is the possibility of using 1 or 2 colors from the more rainbow palette with the cream, gray or white linen. The lighter sage green might be lovely and also speak to Amy’s natural side. Or you could go a higher contrast with one or two of the red/putty/peach range. I’ll be interested to see what you choose! I bet Amy will love whatever you choose because you made it!

I love both of the quilts you're considering. I like the movement of the melody quilt and the colors the most. A linen quilt would be amazing too. Whichever you choose, she is going to love and cherish it. You'll know the right quilt and colors when it clicks with you.

The neutral linens are a complete win. The colors matched to her floral bouquet has the advantage of being a reminder of that wondrous day, but the linens are a classic choice. That’s my vote!

I love your videos! I have a quilt that was given to me 30 years ago for my wedding….handmade by a family member…and she made it in colors she loved…. but that we hated. Still after 30 years it’s not colors that have become popular. (Btw I hate that I don’t love it, but it’s been stored in the cedar chest ever since.) My advice: she might suspect she’s getting a quilt so ask the bride what color she’d like the quilt to be or maybe pick the timeless neutral that goes with everything!

Both the quilting patterns are gorgeous and I can see what a tough decision it would be. I absolutely love the color palette that Amy chose-her bouquet is stunning-and those colors would work beautifully with that quilt pattern. I wouldn’t have thought to put those colors together. The two-tone quilt would be beautiful, as well, and if you didn’t have enough of one or two tan (or if you chose gray) shirts for all those blocks, you could make every tan block using a different tan shirt/fabric. Can’t wait to see what you decide! I’m sure it’ll be fabulous and Amy and her husband will cherish it. (She sounds a little like my younger daughter! ☺️) Happy quilting!!!

The idea that someone suggested to make a reversible quilt with color on one side and neutral linens on the other side is brilliant. I agree with that suggestion OR make them two quilts.

I love the linen idea, you seemed very happy and interested in both, but you just seemed to be more excited about the linen one. Already having ideas on how to “ fix” any fabric shortages. My next door neighbor and my best friend is an excellent quilter. She was having the same quandary as yourself. In the end she chose the timeless beige quilt and she never looked back. It turned out to be exquisite and the bide has never taken it off her bed. It fits all decor and especially someone who is quite unconscious about their personal looks. Look luck on your decision whatever you choose will be the right one!

I love the colors in the wedding party. Your quilting fabric selections are spot on to any composition or pattern you choose to use. I would go out and purchase some teal fabric. I am not a person who is too fond of gray. However,the cream or ivory yardage for the backing would be beautiful. The bride will be thrilled to know the thought that went into creating it. Lucky her! Before you began explaining the colors you were thinking of, I couldn’t keep my eyes off the green/sage/terracotta pieces you had in front of you. This was a lovely recap of your process when choosing your next quilt. Both patterns were pretty. I really liked the colorful one (without the yellow & yellow plaid). I liked the grey and white better than the tan and white. But, I use a lot of gray in my decor and absolutely no brown shades. Thank you for sharing.

I love both designs but the Blizzard quilt using your stash of linen is my favourite! It's simplicity in just the two colours is gorgeous. Sometimes less is more. It will be timeless. Love your video. If you haven’t made the decision already, I vote the timeless look of neutral colors..she can use it forever and add colors with throw pillows. Especially if this will be large bed size. A smaller quilt would be stunning in the wedding colors! She will love either one!!

Woot, another quilt video!! Love seeing the notification pop up when you release another one! I am a color person. Always have been and always will be. I like the looks of neutrals, but for me, there is no joy. However, any quilt made as a gift, is always wonderful regardless if the tastes changes. It will always be used when given, at least if it was given to me. But if your gut is saying neutrals, go with that. Your first instinct is usually correct.

Both are beautiful… love those colors! But…. a linen quilt… so amazing, unique, luxurious. I vote linen 🙂 (wondering what you will use as backing if that’s the final choice) P.S. I’m sure you’ve thought of searching the bed linens/curtain section of your thrift stores. I have a beautiful twin size, unbleached, linen duvet cover… something like that (or a linen curtain) could provide LOTS of yardage.

I see you have equal votes for the two options. Tiny Orchard Quilts made a Wonky Log Cabin using orange centers with grays for the logs. That block would allow you to use Amy's colors in the centers and your linen neutrals for the logs. Perfect!

I live in the UK just on the edge of Dartmoor in the South West of England and the beautiful muted colours are reminiscent of soft clouds and skies wonderful to sleep under.....I'm considering turning to dress shirts for my quilts I think it's really wonderful the ways you upcycle the fabric.....have got a few quilts on the go at the moment but once they are done I'm trying the shirts ..🙃 x

I really enjoyed your sharing your thought process. Great quilt design and size. When there are two tones, I sometimes first see the components. I did not see flowers, I saw stars and horseshoes. Then with the topic of weddng in mind, the horseshoe became a ring and part of the star became the diamond setting. Yes I finally saw the flowers. Either colorway would be nice. I like color. If you decide on neutrals, your label could be from the wedding colors.

Patterns and colors you are considering are all beautiful! In my head I am favoring the Blizzard pattern but using white linen for all the backgrounds and using the less vibrant shades of the wedding colors for all of the foregrounds.

If I was the bride, I would be so thrilled to receive a quilt containing the colors from my wedding. That would mean more and more to me as time passed. Either would be beautiful, but the wedding colors would carry more weight with the memories.

Both quilt options are beautiful! The color options for the Melody quilt are just gorgeous! Personally I would pick the colorful one because of the uniqueness off the color pallet and the absolute beauty of it. Plus it would bring ALOT of dopamine to your quilting time 😂. I love the colors of her wedding. I love the khaki beige for the background color and I like to alternate a print and a solid to help s-t-r-e-t-c-h my fabric so it doesn't look like I ran out of fabric! Lol.

Either would be nice, but I would vote for the colorful pattern. And some of the flowers on the cake had yellow in them, so no need to be afraid of adding yellow into the palette.

Would you ever hit the thrift store in order to find that missing color? Or, go to a quilt store and a find a fat quarter in that shade? I really like the grey and white quilt--it seems more formal for a wedding quilt. I am not a fan of beige, but really like the grey. I think you would find this quilt interesting in the long-term of working on it. A nice gift for someone who is special in your life.

Glad I came across this little bit older video. I’m in That place. I just finished an intensive, pieced row quilt; queen sized….free motion quilted on my midarm Pfaff; for my son and his bride. It was intense, took a lot of planning and layout and color choices from stash. I’m wanting to start my next project now that it was delivered to the new family, but my project pile just isn’t calling me. I did a scrappy fat quarter “kitchen table” plaidish type top. Not inspiring me at all. I’ve got so many choices, but want something that doesn’t have a bunch of repetitive stuff. Sigh…☺️

Susan, I feel this in my bones! It's hard to "go back" and face a project pile that just isn't hitting the inspiration button, isn't it?! It's like that song, "You've lost that loving feeling" --except for quilts! 😂🤪😆 Sometimes the "too many choices" is the biggest problem. I've noticed lately that if I limit myself greatly (only shirts, only solids, only stuff from my stash, pattern from a new quilt designer, technique I've not done before, etc.) it gives me creative juice and then I reward progress on old projects with time spent on the "new" one. I know you didn't ask for suggestions or problem-solving, but I just relate so much that I couldn't not share! 😘

I know I do still love the projects in the waiting pile, but I think it’s the assembly style…or flying geese or half square triangles on overload….but I will persevere!! 🥰

Hi Cathy! Both quilts are beautiful! My choice is the Melody Quilt. But don't use the yellow! I feel like the yellow just turns it into a rainbow quilt. (and maybe she hates yellow!) 😄 I think if you bought some teal to match the gown, it would be perfect! My two cents worth. Can't wait to see what you decide on! 😁❤

Both quilt patterns and fabric pulls are great. For the two toned I personally would miss a little bit of contrast with white/ beige and would lean more to the side of white/ grey or tan. Made a wedding quilt for my sister (finished it half a year after the wedding 🤪) from old table cloth, lace, little coasters and so on. So that quilt lived from the texture and not from the contrast and worked beautifully as well. So I believe what I want to say, if you go with your gut it's just going to be great 🤗

They are both great ideas- I would say that you could make the 2 tone quilt with more than 2 tones of neutals and I think it would be lovely. I personally love that you have her wedding colors and think that could be the more personal one. Great channel!

First: Thank You so much for Your information about men's dress shirt, a new addict was born :) and as I'm living in the UK a big variety of charity shops supports me very well. In most cases the quality of the shirts is astonishing as well as You find fabric with very high quality. Like You I really celebrate every little treasure hunt. I didn't know about the special weaving of Oxford shirts (so thanks a lot for this, a lot to say with a lot of very valuable information, Your channel is great!) but I loved the iridecent colour this special kind of weaving creates in the Oxford Shirts, they are soo beautiful. If I had to choose between the colourful quilt or the KDspain design in grey/taupe and white I would prefer the second one because I really love the subtle and elegant character this quilt would have and think of all the linen You could work with :)), isn't that tantalizing?. Perhaps You could add a small, paper pieced wedding cake out of all the colours Your friend worked with on her wedding in some edge/corner of the quilt? Keep on the good work! Sue

Id ask her what colors she has in her bedroom 1st. Her wedding colors are bright nature colors, orange, blues, greens in her flowers remind me of nature & sunrises & sets. She may like to wear neutrals so she doesnt take away from natures beauty she enjoys around herself. Im retired & still prefer color in my home because it reminds me of nature, like her wedding colors, which I adore.

I love your idea for the linen in the 2 tone quilt - beautiful pattern. I know you said the blocks are large but if it is going beyond the 3X3 you showed I thought you could work from the cream and whites into the grays as the blocks don't really make a strong secondary pattern that would force you to keep the pallet in the same 2 shades throughout. I do love neutrals almost as much as I love rainbows! I look forward to this journey with you no matter which you choose! To me this is the best part - the planning, but I do enjoy the cutting, piecing and of course THE FINISH.

First of all, both are BEAUTIFUL! As a new bride I have to weigh in! My wedding colors are not the colors in my house - I wanted my wedding to be bright and cheerful, but my house is calm and neutral. I lean toward the linen quilt for the exact reason you mentioned - about being gifted something and wanting to use it for years, but not loving the colors and/or not having a room/place to put it where it would match. You can’t go wrong with a neutral and the bride can brighten up the space with her own colorful pillows if she so desires! :)

I made a shades of gray quilt after seeing how much variance there is in the color gray. (The need to make it hit me when I had a pile of mostly Moda grays and a few Japanese ones - and because I'm contrary, I included black & white prints.)

Oh, you know me... you KNOW I'm interested in leaving my thoughts and opinions in the comments! 😅 Love the color quilt (however I'm deeply skeptical of that yellow and the plaid, though I'd like both in another context) but I would 1000% go with the linen&linen option. So. Very. Luxurious. And timeless--I would never have put my wedding colors in my house. I generally go for greys, and the idea of making one of the two "tones" a pattern and even having different patterns would be pretty. But. The linen gets my vote all day on this one. The sensory richness of that is too yummy to pass up. And the pattern itself comes across more bold and graphic that way, but still neutral. The elegance! The casual classiness! You could even do the quilting in a contrasting color or black to give it another layer of interest while still being neutral but stunning. Ahem. Yes. ANYWAY. One vehement vote for white and linen LINEN!! Although I bet she'll adore whatever you do because either/any of the choices will be beautiful. I think all creatives have the WIP (work in progress) bug. I certainly do. I've done it with crochet and writing and sewing and sometimes even cooking... they just pile up! How do these things happen?? We won't ever die if we have so many projects to finish, right? I'm all the way behind your thought process on that, and thanks for showing us! Makes me feel like I'm not alone.

I love the idea of the colours from the wedding. To make sure there is enough contrast in the two tone, stand a few metres away and look. You may lose the pattern if there is not enough. I once saw at an exhibition a beautifully made ‘dear Jane’ two tone quilt but there was so little contrast it might as well have been a whole cloth quilt.

My favorite is the one with the colors from her wedding. Such beautiful colors that you know for certain that she likes. My suggestion would be to do that for the quilt top but then do something very neutral on the back so that she has a choice between colorful or neutral. That would be a win win in my opinion. 🙂

I love to listen to you talk making it awesome that you have a lot to say about that. I think I have mentioned that I print the patterns that call to me and start making notes until I know who it belongs to and the colors. Seems like you are doing that. My thoughts on the wedding quilt: I personally don’t feel any love for either pattern. I’m an earthy outdoorsy person and they just don’t get me an outdoorsy feel. Obviously I love linen. They make the best quilts. Don’t forget to look at dresses. The bride chose several colors for her wedding. My instinct is to go with that first set of colors you picked out. They match the dresses. They match the cake. I think she would love to see all of those colors in her quilt. That would be a quilt she will love forever. The two tone one is saying meh to me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

@@TheCatBirdQuilts what a nice thing to say. I understand that you want to wait to show the bride and groom with the finished quilt. It’s not on usual for me to actively be working on 5 or 6 quilts at the same time. Once the pieces are cut I chain piece all I have and it’s usually 2 or 3 quilts worth. Different colors and different shapes so they don’t get mixed up. Then I like to iron them while I see what Cathy Martin has to say. ☮️💟

Wow, I would choose the two color quilt, and use the "linen" color for sure. It is so much warmer, whereas the gray is beautiful, but colder or more classic. Where is Nebraska? I live in the western part.

So much to say …. I think the “next quilt” excitement is what gets people through the current quilt doldrums. Re selection process … you have which design, which colours, and are using The Wedding colours, Who Amy is, her current/future decor and her lifestyle (here I am thinking dogs and cats who may be allowed onto beds). So … in that mix, the most central element is who Amy is as a person. What does she like best? Recall you made frog fabric … you do … eh … highly personal quilts really well. Like REALLY well. So I would do a mind map of Amy and use that to inform colour, pattern etc. an object that connects to someone is easiest connected through their … eh … heart-mind. Like you see something and just ooooooo. That’s heart-mind. Or sparks joy. Anyway …. If you need an actual vote, I would go with the snowflake looking quilt (first one) and use the grey/whites but for the centre diamond use the muted shades of her wedding pallet. Special hello to your film crew and the guy in the booth that created the screen splitting. Made me laugh. 😁😁😁💕💕💕💕. I am SO curious to see how this turns out. 💕💕💕
